XXXBenny took his seat in the front in the same spot as last class. He scratched out notes as fast as his left hand would allow, and then paused to admire how recent some of these events really were. He stopped writing a while after the professor had finished, and only just before Fianna had asked her question. He looked over appreciatively to the red-head, it was a brilliant question after all, and then looked over to Professor Powell for the answer.
Grayson looked up from his book as he noticed the students coming in. He didn't know how long he had been sitting reading, but the effect was always the same. Usually it would end with him being confused about what was going on, but today was different. He was supposed to be teaching the class, and as usual, it left him a bit awkward as to how to go about it. He however decided to go about doing it the simple way.
"Hello, class, and welcome to History of Magic. I am your professor, Grayson Powell. In this class, there is no wandwork, since magic doesn't help you to learn about history. Therefore, your wands will need to be put away."He stood, taking his feet from off the desk and faced the children directly. "History is a collection of events, as I'm sure you are all well aware of. However, these events help to shape the world around us. If not for the witch burnings of the sixteen hundreds, we would not have the Statue of Secrecy. If not for the crises of the last century, we would not have cooperation of all magical folk."He glanced around the class, letting his gaze fall over each of the students."Now, can someone tell me, besides what I have stated, why history needs to be learned?"

Tiernan did not give a whit about history in any way, shape, or form, so it was a bit depressing that this was her first class. At least it wasn't very early in the morning; she consoled herself as she entered the class room, taking a seat in the back near a half open window. She was quite excited for her first Astronomy lesson tonight, but it seemed awful that she wouldn't get to begin Herbology until Friday. Why did the schedules have to be so rigid? She could usually do whatever she liked, when she liked, at home. Thinking of her garden and her snakes depressed her, so she tried to pay attention to what the professor, a middle aged man with glasses and an odd goatee, was saying. Magic not help them to learn history? Magic was history! Tiernan pouted, but put away her wand. At least he had finally taken his feet off the desk; it was quite a rude way to greet a class. Oh dear, he was already referring to things like 'a collection of events' and 'Statue of Secrecy' and 'crises of the last century'. This wasn't getting off to a very interesting start. And that question! How utterly ridiculous! He'd just given them the answer, and now he expected them to give different answers when he hadn't taught even a single thing! This should be asked at the end of the year, not the beginning, she thought indignantly. It didn't seem very logical. Tiernan raised her hand, a vaguely frustrated look already on her face, as she adjusted her glasses with the other hand. The small girl carefully waited to be recognized before speaking, and then spoke slowly. "Sir, I'm not sure how any of us can answer this question. Is this opinion based, or are we to make assumptions based on our understandings of history thus far? I can't think of a single reason why history needs to be learned- I know it should be learned, so as not to repeat the past, and so we can learn from it- but it's never stopped anyone from making the same mistakes someone made a hundred years ago." She frowned. "Time is a continuous loop, correct?"

Esther was unsure of what to make of a class called "History of Magic" as she lived a very non-magical existence so far. Well besides learning about miracles from history. After all the Bible, the most important history book in existence, was full of extraordinary events. She took a seat near the front of the room, excited to begin her education at Hogwarts, and listened as the professor, Professor Powell began his lecture. Essie was about to answer when a girl who had been sorted into Ravenclaw spoke up and gave a very opinionated answer about needs and should and something about time being a continuous loop.
Raising her hand, Essie quickly interjected, "I disagree, history does need to be learned. It is from historical accounts we learn about the wonders of God. Father says we can't properly worship Him if we don't learn of all His wondrous feats and accomplishments. The hand of God is everywhere so it only makes sense that the more history you learn the better Christian you can be."

Darian entered the classroom and made a face. Ugh, did she have to be in this class? It wasn't like her parents didn't pound history into her and her sisters's heads when they were younger. It just... never quite stuck with her. The only highlight she could see was that she was going to be able to sit with Tiernan, and she hadn't seen her since the Sorting. Ugh, stupid hat. She flopped into the seat next to Tiernan and grinned, giving her sister a hug. She then settled down, and quickly grew bored as the professor made a speech about history. Tiernan answered him with an opinion of her own, and then Darian had to blink, and then blink again as another girl said something about gods and Christians and it made Darian just shake her head."What does God have to do with history? It doesn't make sense. That's like mythology. Not really true unless you believe it. Besides, why do we have to listen to some creepy old guy in the sky? The last time people listened wholeheartedly to some creepy guy there was a whole war that killed a lot of people."She might have not been up to date on history, but she knew important facts. Like how they didn't talk about a great-uncle because he was mixed up in something pretty nasty. All because he believed wholeheartedly in what some creepy guy had believed and preached. She crossed her arms, looking at the other girl with a mulish expression on her face.

Richard wasn’t looking forward to history. He hated having to remember things. Though it was the first week so better to just go to class and pray they weren’t going heavily into anything. Entering the classroom he found a spot with Essie, figuring he didn’t know anyone else so why not. Placing his books on the desk in front of him, he propped his head up with his hand. ‘Why do we need to learn history anyways…?’ He thought to himself as Professor Powell started in on the lecture.
Lazily looking to the front, Richard listened to Professor Powell. Why did history need to be learned? Hadn’t he been asking himself that very same question? Listening to a Ravenclaw girl mention history was a continuous loop followed by Essie mentioning it helped you learn about God’s wonders. Then a Slytherin girl spoke, from what Richard cared to notice was she was related to the Ravenclaw girl. Of course she had to question what God had to do with history. Richard mentally groaned to himself as she brought up the creepy guy in the sky (Voldemort).
“God is completely different from Voldemort. It can also be argued that Mythology and History are very much the same, as history is just a story told from one person to another same as Myths. However history has actually facts behind it while Myths do not.”Richard spoke up matter-of-factly. He didn’t say it in any sort of defensive way. He just figured he should clarify that she was a tad off. He may not like history but he did take the time to recall general things his family through down his throat.
Not afraid to be different! Well isn't that refreshing! Your family may be Slytherin, but I think you'll find your way in... Gryffindor!

Saio Mio Ukida First YearHufflepuff Adopted ☼ Half-blood
Location : History - Monday @ 1:00pm
Walking into history, Saio wasn’t thrilled but she wasn’t exactly down about it. It was their first class, something she shared with Kenzie who had been sorted into Gryffindor. She wished it had of worked out differently however she wasn’t going to remain upset. They could spend a lot of time together even outside of classes. Finding somewhere in the middle of the room, Saio set her books down on the table before taking a seat.
Listening as the class started and everyone when on to answer Professor Powell’s question, Saio didn’t know what to say. She didn’t have an answer herself. She barely knew her own history never mind everyone else’s. Of course that didn’t mean that she wouldn’t do her best in class. As the class began talking, Saio really hoped an argument would come of it. People usually argued when they had differences of option, her sister being a prime example.
Rey was really excited to start History of Magic; she was excited to start every class actually but she loved history almost as much as she loved science and History of Magic shouldn't be too different! She put in an effort to get to class early and sat down near the front of her class, pulling out her books and supplies.
When the teacher, who had been reading up until that point, introduced himself and asked them a question, Rey's hand shot up quickly but another girl from Ravenclaw, one of the Yaxley's, she remembered from the Sorting, raised her hand as well and answered about how she couldn't think of a reason why History needed to be learnt and implied it was useless since it didn't stop people from making mistakes. Rey felt irritation coursing through her, that's not the only reason why history is useful! Another girl, Spencer from Gryffindor, interjected about how it would help Christians worship God and another Yaxley argued against her — did she just compare Voldemort to God?? — before Devereux tried to clarify. To be honest, Spencer has a good point, even though I don't really agree with her beliefs.
Rey couldn't take it anymore and raised her hand again, waiting to be recognised and gave her own opinion."While you're right about people making the same mistakes Yaxley, time isn't a continuous loop. Nothing ever happens the same way twice and history is not just important to stop repeating mistakes. By studying history, we can find out and analyse what happened in the past, figure out where people went right, or wrong, and we can apply that to the present. History teaches us how to handle situations and to deal with these repeated mistakes that you've mentioned in the best possible manner. In fact, using a more recent example; Voldemort's second rise to power wouldn't have been as successful as it had been if he didn't use his previous experience to manipulate the Ministry and if he analysed his own past mistakes and avoided repeating them, Harry Potter might have never defeated him in that battle and he might have still been at large today." Rey paused and took a deep breath before continuing. "On another note, we have always stood on the shoulders of giants. Every major breakthrough we've gained, whether we are talking about magical or muggle, has been inspired and completed by the work and progress of other people who've come before us. And not only that, all our cultural arts, music, literature, they've all been inspired by history and the work and actions of people who've been long-dead. Our history is our culture; we wouldn't be where we are without it and it is important to know what got us here because despite what we say or try, it will have an impact on our lives and it will shape our future."
She then turned to the other Yaxley girl, Darian she thought was her name. "Also, Spencer has a good point. Just because you don't share her beliefs doesn't make her opinion less valid. Let people have their own beliefs and just because you find it strange or unbelievable doesn't mean you can just disparage it publicly unless it is actually obstructing you from doing your work and going on with your daily life."

And the two had gotten into trouble together and cost there house a figurative ton of points So it may be best to stick together in case one of them was attacked then they could watch each other's back.
Vito listened to everyone talking and there was a few names that went over his head, that he'd have to ask Rey about later. Voldemort, Harry Potter, wasn't he the character from that horrid troll movie, the one with acting so bad he would not feed it to a dog?
Vito was smiling at the debate, ah religion one of the things that might be more evil then he was. Is striking again, starting wars in the classroom. How he would just love to stir things up even more, but the for now he wanted to lay low and be the good student, or as good as he could be. "If I may remind the class we are learning magical history, not religious debate. I suggest if you feel strongly one way or the other about the subject you can see if you can form a club but let's keep it out of the classroom." Vito said trying sound like he only wanted to do well in class and not be distracted by others rabble rousing. "Now I believe history is subjective and should be looked at from more than one angle. I mean there one man's hero is another's villain and vice versa, if we look at wars the victors tend to be the ones telling the history, it's the difference between a rebellion and a revolution, rebellions fail and revolutions are the ones to succeed as simple as that." Vito said before taking his seat.
"I'd die for you," that's easy to say, we have a list of people that we would take A bullet for them, a bullet for you, a bullet for everybody in this room But I don't seem to see many bullets coming through, see many bullets coming through Metaphorically, I'm the man but literally, I don'tknow what I'd do

Ivar casually entered the classroom with ease, scanning the room for potential seatmates, and then he decided to screw it before proceeding to sit beside Darian who he had first encountered in an apothecary. He sighed as he approached her and the Ravenclaw, thinking that they might have hated him for their first talk and he supposed that if anything, he would be ready to apologize. Problem was, he didn't know if he should be the one to apologize or the other side. After all, he couldn't remember much what happened during their first meeting. He kept quiet as he felt awkward about just looking at the two Yaxleys, and he tilted his head in curiosity when Tiernan spoke up. He could actually see the point in her answer, though, and he would not disagree on that. But then, the other girl from Gryffindor interfered and went on and on about Christians and God or whatever.
While he wasn't practicing any religion, he did believe there was someone great out there, but then it didn't make some sense for the Swede. He open his mouth and was about to ask her as of what does it have anything to do with History Class until the Slytherin girl (Darian) beside him ask her for him. He has going to agree with her until she went on sounding disrespectful for Essie, because it was just wrong to not respect anyone's beliefs. "Okay, no offense but please respect her beliefs if possible," He said with a serene tone, looking at Darian then he turned to listen at Reyna's long explanation. For some reason, as much as how it sounded like his older brother when he was reading to him books, it actually made more sense. Damn. He mouthed a 'wow' and muttered, "Kära nån, that is the most detailed point I've ever heard this year, amen to that" Then he turned his head towards the small boy (Vitomir) as he spoke out, reminding them that they were in History Class and not some Christian Living class or something related to it, he commented, "Ja, and technically speaking, History is based on recorded facts, religions are like... like some kind of cultural beliefs or something,"

Glynn stepped into the room, already feeling self-conscious, and looked around. He saw Ivar already in the classroom, and Rey, but he didn't see Arnie anywhere around. He shifted uncomfortably while he debated on where to sit, but shrugged and sat next to Ivar, giving Rey a look of apology. He sat back, listening to the professor. He loved history, but then again, his grandfather loved history and had an entire library filled with books on the subject. Or well, not an entire library, but certainly an entire section of the library. The Welsh boy was about to raise his hand when he heard the other students speak up, and he frowned, his forehead crinkling with confusion. Wait, were they arguing about religion? Glynn wasn't particularly a religious person, but he knew the sermons and attended church regularly with his grandparents enough to know about the subject. Which honestly, why were they debating about religion was beyond him. After all, he knew that no one here was a theologian so he didn't se how a bunch of eleven year old kids to start a debate on the subject."While the debate on God and religion is interesting, aren't you all kids? I thought that would be more the purview of theologians and adults myself. Can we please get back to history? I came to class for history, not a religious debate."He gave an apologetic look toward the Gryffindor pair and the boy that Rey was sitting next to. He wasn't trying to make it sound like he was scolding them, but the other kids needed it.

Colton and Connor had just settled into their first class. History of Magic. While neither was particularly concerned about history, the class sounded promising... until religious debate broke out. Connor was typing away, trying to garner any important information from the debates that were quickly becoming much less than debates. While some of the others had good points with a nice logic to their words, he was really only interested in how that affected the class. Colton was watching the debates with fascination, and when a blonde boy mentioned them getting back to history, he raised a hand, then stood.
"We've been 'round the world with our parents, usually taking pictures and stuff, but anyway, as we traveled to different areas, we'd study their religions a bit. No matter what religion it is you hail from, there's always one constant. History. It doesn't matter what you believe sometimes. A war always started on one date, ended another. A building was taken down, a fire started, something was invented... whatever it is, it happened the same day for everyone. That's what I like about history. It may be interpreted differently, but it's always the same for everybody! Besides, as children, we've got a big obligation, don't we? To create history!" Colton grinned brightly, then sat back down, hoping he'd had a positive change in the conversation... or maybe he'd made it worse. Whatever.

Tiernan glanced over at Esther, the Gryffindor, when she quickly interjected. She didn't feel any particular scorn or condescension towards the other girl for her religious beliefs- the Ravenclaw was not sure if she believed in the presence of a god, and at that, just one god, but if one or a few were to exist she liked to think they were giant snakes in the sky. "I think the question was intended to be generally speaking, not personally speaking," she said mildly. "After all, there's hundreds of religions in the world." She had hugged Darian back when she came in, and wondered if she was referring to Voldemort- Tiernan knew who that was, despite not being very up on her history- She pulled herself back from the brink and shook her head a little, then focused her attention on Reyna, a Slytherin, who had just gone off on a vehement rebuttal. "My first name is Tiernan, not Yaxley, my sister's name is Darian, and Esther's name is Esther, not Spencer," she began calmly. "And my question about time was directed towards the professor, though you're free to answer it however you like. My concern is that despite all of this analysis and all of this studying, we still manage to do the same terrible things over and over again, just in new and improved ways. You're leaving chance out of it, I'm afraid. You can't simply avoid repeating the past by trying to calculate your every move. If life were chess it would be far less complicated. And I don't see how Darian was disparaging Esther's views; she was just stating an opinion she has every right to have if she so chooses." She raised an eyebrow at the Overton twins. "History isn't constant, and that's the problem. People lie. They lie all the time, and they write it down in books, and we call them facts because we cannot dispute them. Not everything happened the same way for everyone- I imagine a peasant would tell a very different story of a war then a king."

Rowan had been sitting calmly next to her sisters. She hadn't planned on putting her thoughts into the question, since her sisters basically covered everything she would have said, except the little idiots that called themselves students had the idiocy to talk to her sisters like that. They were going to pay. "Hey Gryffinidiot. My sister never mentioned Voldemort." She said, glaring at the boy. "Maybe you should learn some history outside of Magical history and you might actually know.... anything. But you obviously don't know anything because you are an idiot." She stated, turning her head away from the boy. She was not going to deal with idiots. Tiernan was one thing. Tiernan had never bothered to learn muggle history because Darian and Rowan had that covered. She had already been distracted by some little girl calling her sister Yaxley. "Oh I'm sorry what was that. Which one of us are your talking to. If you didn't notice there are 3 of us." She quipped sarcastically at Rey.
And that was as far as she listened. If someone wasn't going to have the decency to differentiate between the 3 sisters, they were not worth Rowan's time. She rolled her eyes and turned to her sisters before hissing. "I don't know why we're even discussing this. Its an opinion based question and history is not an opinion based subject. Its fact or fiction." She scanned their faces, seeing if they agreed with her. She hated it when they didn't agree with her.
