Lol I can just imagine the various fan clubs of the characters killed during book 7 crying foul blood and sending tons of hate mail to Rowling. rofl rofl

I read it in less than 5 hours yesterday after buying it in the morning.
I must say that Book 7 is hell of a lot different to the other 6 books. Not just in the setting, in the way the old characters are portrayed, in the almost action/horror movie style way lots of longtime characters die, but even in the basic writing style itself. It's much less kidsy and simple to understand than the previous books. Heck it didn't even feel like a HP book to me; it was rather like one of the many dozens of generic fantasy novels I've read with the lone hero, his (dis)loyal sidekick and hot female companion on a quest to obtain or destroy several magical artifacts to bring down the evil dark lord and win the heart of his true love. The final epilogue(I won't spoil what it is) is especially cliched, with shades of Digimon Aventure 2(whoever's seen the last episode of it will agree).
Still, being so cliched doesn't mean it wasn't fun to read. Far from it. I think it's the most enjoyable HP book of them all precisely because Rowling stuck to most of the standard fantasy/shonen manga conventions and and finally got to the end point of the story.

@'elfy - I think book 6 was already fairly like that, it's good 'cause it's like.. developing along with the characters growing up, if you see what I mean.

The guy's only been trying to kill Harry for his entire life.
Note how Harry never kills anyone.
Ron has.
Hermione has.

Well to be technical Harry deflected Voldermort's killing curse right back on Voldemort himself, thus killing him. That bit was written rather poorly by Rowling since it wasn't exactly explained how Harry rebounded the curse, but he definitely did.
And as for Ron and Hermione actually killing someone, well so many people use the killing curse in book 7 that it became rather passe for so me, so it didn't matter who managed to kill who.
Finally, Harry's been more famous for surviving direct killing blows to the chest. He took one when he was a baby, deflected one in GOF, dodged plenty of curses in OOTP and this book, took another direct hit with no protection again and survived, and finally deflected a curse and succeded in killing the dark lord with it.

HP 7 Topic - I saw the book in Sainsbury in Derby yesterday, had a quick flick to the end, and thought Harry died before looking through it, but apparently he didnt -_________-
