So the planets have to grow on you to like them?

That it correct. Jupiter is pretty easy to appreciate. But Saturn and Neptune take a while to get used to. Those two and Venus are my favorite songs ever.

Ouch...You see, to me, that's like stabbing myself until I don't feel pain anymore...

Aristocat, even though you hate The Planets, which one is your favorite?

When I first started out with classical, all I liked was the Requiem and that has a certain catchy value. I had to teach myself how to listen carefully, and even now there are things I don't listen to very well because I'm confused or distracted by it.

So I've always though becoming more closely acquainted to what I'm listening to will be good before I judge it. And so I ended up hailing JS Bach as one of the greatest geniuses of music I've ever heard, when at first I thought his music was kinda "performing monkey for the aristocracy".

He has a special place with me now. So it's definitely worth it sometimes.

I've tried at times. But it comes down to several reasons:

1. I don't like his melodies.
2. I HATE his orchestration.
3. It's so overplayed.

By the way, which Requiem? Faure, Mozart (or Sussmayer), Verdi, Brahms?

@Cosmo: At a push I'd go for...Uranus.

It's like making me choose between Hitler or Stalin.

And if you think that appreciation of Holst is a high up factor in getting an idea of someone's humanity...You need your ears tested. Come on, Holst is no where near as beautiful as Chopin, Brahms or Haydn. And he doesn't even come close in influence.

They're pieces...

Well, each to their own. To me, Debussy creates stories better than anyone else, and for orchestration Shostakovich, Rachmaninoff, Mozart and Brahms always excel.

I have a very special place in my heart for most composers - I even have some Wagner that I love. However, for me, Holst just doesn't cut it...

@ Aristocrat, the Mozart one biggrin it's great but I don't listen so much to it anymore because I've heard it so much. I've only just heard the Brahms "Deutsches Requiem" within the last 6 months. Movement 2 is amazing. Really moved me.

Cosmo, what conductor/etc do you prefer for The Planets?

i like certain things about all of them
mars: i dont like the trumpets to be overbaring and the tempo of the song needs to be quick

venus: i like the celeste played up high and the oboe towards the beggining should sound like someone is singing it. the swells throughout the song need to be significant

mercury: fast BUT clean, everyone needs to be on the same page as everyone else. also the chimes ( or whatever is playing the triplet pattern ) are an octave lower then the highest point.

jupiter: higher notes do not need to be so quiet. swells are appreciated. and the song should be not too, too fast but definitly not remotley slow.

saturn: slow and steady. swells greatly appreciated. i also like the part where the low plucked strings come in to be not all that quiet. and the loud part needs to be LOUD.

uranus: timpani needs to be LOUD on the solo part it has. brass should stay loud.

neptune: celeste needs to be flawless and it needs to be played high. the whole song should be super legato. also not super slow so the song should finish in about 6 minutes 30 seconds.

the orchestra i find does the song the best is the LSO. they are very near perfection, i still would like some things changed but they do the best in my opinion

I've listened through it a few times by now. This is a recording conducted by Karajan with the Berliner Philharmoniker as it's all I could find. He's not my favorite conductor but it's alright.

I think my favorite piece is definitely Venus out of them all.

Venus is the one song i probably wont grow tired of. If you want to hear the LSO play The Planets then download them on iTunes
