The Mewtwo movie did actually have some decent writing. But it gets outclassed by the Lucario movie.

But Barry is far more entertaining than Ritchie ever was. The Characters of the day are more likeable now. We have more recurring characters as well.

Ash isn't a robot. I'm really not sure where that even comes from.
Dawn, while clueless at times, is far from an idiot.
Brock's not a robot either. He's just as over the top as ever.
