Kate nodded softly to Marcus before turning and going to her own room. It was somewhat late and she was very tired. Kate fell asleep the second she hit her bed.

In the morning, Kate woke up hearing a light nod on her door. Kate got up and quietly answered the door, thinking that it might be Marcus. She was smiling happily until she saw that it was a servant. Her smile dropped even further when she noticed the grave look on the girl's face. Kate searched the girl's eyes, trying to figure out what had happened. "Miss. Kate..... Your father passed in the night and- and your mother wishes to see you." The girl said softly before leaving quickly. Kate had a very worried look on her face as she practically ran to her pare- mother's room. "No no no no no no no!" Kate muttered loudly as she ran. When she got to the room she opened it to see her mother laying there with her eyes closed. Kate looked to see if her chest was going up and down, but saw no movement. Kate saw the pity in the eyes of the man who was in the room as well and just turned around before running with tears streaming down her face.

Marcus woke with the sun again, and spent quite some time simply sitting on the heavily cushioned bed. It was a little too soft for him, but a bed is a bed. After walking around the room, examining everything in detail, he returned to the bed. It was likely that Kate was still asleep. The storm had passed though. He stood, getting ready to leave. He opened the door, stepping into the hall. In a moment of surprise, he dodged back into the room when he saw Kate running towards him.

Kate noticed that Marcus was in the hall, but he moved out of her way so she just kept running. Kate ignored the noise of others and went out into the garden. She looked around at it before sitting on the ground and pulling her knees into her chest before putting her head down and crying into her legs. She couldn't believe that this was happening. It was too soon. She didn't know how to deal with it.

Marcus followed Kate slowly, dodging around harried looking servants. The door to the garden was open, so Marcus went through it. Kate sat on the ground, crying still. Keeping silent, he sat next to her. He didn't watch her, didn't touch her, and didn't speak to her. He was simply near to her, in case he was needed.

Kate looked at Marcus when he sat down before turning away quickly. "J- just go away. Your dad's probably worried about you. Y- y- you should just... Leave." Kate said in between sobs. She tried to act like she was ok, but it wasn't working very much at all.

Marcus turned his head to look at Kate, watching her shoulders shake. "If you really want me to go, then I will. Some people prefer to be alone with their grief. When mother died, father secluded himself for weeks." Despite his words, Marcus remained sitting. He was not going to leave until he was sure that Kate wanted him gone.

Kate looked at Marcus with a hopeless look and then shook her head. She didn't want Marcus to leave. She didn't want to be alone anymore. "M- my mom wanted to talk to me, but... W- when I got there she- she- ...." Kate muttered in a weak and shaky voice.

Marcus put an arm across Kate's shoulders. "I understand. At least, I think I do. It explains why you did not introduce me to them. I won't tell you it's going to be okay. It never is. It likely never will be. But if you need me, I am here." He spoke softly, looking her in the eyes.

Kate felt better with Marcus' arm on her shoulder. She stayed near him for a while until she saw a shadow fall over her. Kate looked up and saw her teacher's frowning face. Kate looked at Marcus before standing up. "Yes, Sir?" Kate said quietly. She wasn't in the mood to listen to her teacher's lecture about not socializing with 'peasants' and she didn't want Marcus to get offended. "I need to speak with you. Now that your parents are gone you are expected to be in charge, not out here mopping." The teacher said meanly to Kate.

Marcus stood as Kate did, eying the man. Kate seemed to defer to him, so was likely a tutor or guardian of some kind. He spoke harshly, and Marcus just felt like he had been rubbed the wrong way. He decided that he didn't like the man. "Have you no compassion, sir? The girls parents just died. She needs time to grieve, and accept it. And if I guess correctly, you are paid by her household, which she would now inherit. Therefore, you should be listening to her, not the other way around."

The man glared at Marcus, not liking him either. He chuckled when Marcus said that Kate was in charge of him. "Ahhhh the hilarity of the way commoners think. Listen, boy, while she may be the next in line to be in rule, there are still matters to be settled before she's truly in charge. Why are you here anyway? Commoners aren't allowed here. Now leave before I call a guard to take you away." The man said, talking down to Marcus. "Come along now, girl."

Kate looked from Marcus to her teacher to Marcus. "Marcus, just go please. I'm sure your dad is very worried about you right now." Kate said quietly and softly before following her teacher.

Marcus gritted his teeth, watching Kate's back as she walked away with her tutor. The man would likely not survive another encounter without a few scrapes and bruises to show for it. Seeing nothing else he could do, Marcus turned to leave. He muttered foul words under his breath, startling a maid as he retrieved his bow.

"If you are to be Princess Kate's suitor, you should learn to control your tongue, young man," she said, rebuking him mildly.

"I think you mistake me, madame. I am simply a poor farmer who sought shelter during last nights tempest. Please tell Kate that should she need me... well... she know where I'll be," Marcus said as he turned to leave. He jogged through the forest, trying to calm himself down a little.

Kate went through the majority of the day listening to adults plan her parents' funeral and deciding what would happen to her. She was only two and a half years away from being eighteen after all. It would be her job to watch over the village's ruling soon enough. Some argued that she should just be given control, but others argued that she needed to be at least sixteen and married before she took over. Eventually, Kate snapped at them all that she didn't need to be married and that it was her own descion as to whether she took over rule in half a year or two and a half years. She told them that the second she was sixteen she would take rule, married or not. Few people agreed with her, but surprisingly her tutor spoke up saying that Kate was ready for this. The day-long meeting finally ended, but Kate couldn't go back to her room. There were too many things on her mind. Kate merely went back out to the garden and sat, crying once more over how much crap was happening so fast.

After quite some time, Marcus returned to his father. He hunted along the way, and deposited his kills at home. He retrieved some smoked meat that would keep for a while, and talked to his father. The man had been worried, but merely nodded when Marcus told him that he was going back out, and likely wouldn't return until the next day.

Bow across his back and food in a pack, he jogged back towards Kate's house through the forest. It was a decent day that was quickly turning into a pleasant evening when he arrived at the palatial mansion, and skirted the grounds until he was near the garden. From the brush, he peered into it, trying to signal Kate that he was there with a bit of sun reflected off of his knife.

While Kate was crying she spotted a bright light through her tears. She thought at first it was a golden light from the heavens telling her to be strong, but eventually she was pretty sure she saw something moving in the brush. Kate wiped her eyes clean, feeling like a cry baby. Though, she did have a good reason for crying so much that day. A lot had happened. Kate got up and looked around to see if anyone was around. Near the door of the house she saw a maid, but that was all and the woman was looking the other way. Kate stood up and ran quietly to the brush. "Marcus?" Kate whispered quietly.
