"I'll get rid of the walls, but you have to promise not to run again."

He cast the spells that lowered the walls.

"As for Alcott, the only ways for me to prevent repeated attempts to get you are by killing him or by casting that spell. If he's as determined as you say he is, he'll never stop otherwise."

"He's very powerful," she said softly, her fingers touching the necklace again. "Half demon, half angel, he's never been defeated before. Alcott was too powerful sometimes. Sometimes, he was too great for someone as insignificant as me, as weak and small. I don't want either of you to get hurt, Miles. I wouldn't be able to live with myself if something happened to you."

"My father taught me many spells. It's my spells that have protected me through the years. But no matter what his lineage, he's not invincible. I know plenty of protective circles to stop angels, demons, dragons, even a mere human. I can trap them, slow them down, make them suffer intense pain."

Miles looked her in the eyes. (For the record, his eyes are still solid black.)

"But I play dirty if I need to. Have you ever seen a half-demon get an exorcism cast on them? I'm not going to let him get you."

She sighed, clasping her hands tightly behind her back. "Why are you do desperate to keep me safe? I brought you here, you got what you wanted. What makes you want to stay?"

Mayah Playah

"This trip isn't over. I said I'd show you my cave after we were done here. Plus, you had business of your own here as well. And if you remember, I am your sworn bodyguard until the trip is over. I will defend you to the death."

He unwrapped his hands and showed her the cuts, which were mostly healed by now.

"I am bound by honor."

"And if he comes for me after the trip is complete?" she asked quietly, bowing her head.

"Then I'll be protecting you as your friend."

He wrapped his hands back up and uncovered his face.

"Unless you wish to make this arrangement more permanent."

"Permanent? What are you talking about?" Her head snapped up and, suddenly aware of their closeness, her eyes widened.

 

[Seravious]

Mayah Playah

"We repeat the ritual. You cut my hands again, but this time the agreement makes me your permanent bodyguard. Even if we cease to be friends, I will be bound to you for life, or until you release me from the contract."

He pulled the snow sword out of the ground and held it like he did the first time, head bowed once more.

Michaela shook her head vigorously. "No. I'm not going to hold you to myself like that."

"Very well."

He put the sword back in the ground.

"So what now?"

Tapping her chin lightly, she suddenly brightened. "Let's go get something to eat. There should be a diner just a little bit away from here. Besides, we're in no hurry, right?"

"Didn't you have business to take care of here?"

He put away his weapons.

"I'm not complaining about the idea of getting food though."

"My business can wait," she said simply, starting off towards the other side of the ruins. "Besides, I'm starving."

Miles walked behind Michaela keeping enough distance to avoid touching her, but not enough to put her in any immediate danger.

"I could go for a steak right now."
