Johnathan Hartman I wasn't sure what this city was coming to. First a cop is found dead, then a young girl. Fiona C. Hayes, age 25, neck was broken, bruises on her wrists. Not much was known about her, if anything really. No address, no permanent residence, nothing. It wasn't until we got a phone call from one Rose Walters. She worked at The Rising Phoenix and basically managed the show girls. But why a young woman? Why Fiona? Why the method? It was someone that got close to her. When he got too rough she struggled, he over-powered her then finished her off. Why did he get rough? Maybe she got around, heard something she shouldn't have, maybe she just got unlucky and picked a goon with a couple of screws loose. I was just speculating, but with any luck, I'd get some answers I was looking for. Walking to the door, I gave it a few knocks.

Rose Walters Rose opened the door and looked the man u and down. "You have to be a cop no one else ever knocks, it is a place of business you can just walk in. Or do you knock at the grocers and the bank as well?" She asked him giving him an unimpressed stare. Rose was not in a mood to be civil after she learned of Fiona's death in the papers no details just a Jane Doe and few sentences saying that the cops wanted people to come forward. Not much to go on, but Fiona was one of her girls and she may not of been able to protect her but she would do her damnedest to see who ever was responsible pay with their life.

Johnathan Hartman "Well Miss, considering the time of day and the purpose of this establishment, I doubt it'd be open to the general public just yet. The knock was just a bit of consideration." The look on her face was enough to tell me cops didn't play too good of a role in her life. Maybe we hurt her business, or perhaps it was something more personal. Someone not there because they wore a badge and didn't come home one night, or maybe that badge took someone out of her life. Either way, I could already tell this was going to be a long conversation. "Of course, if you don't want to help me in the investigation, I can just hop in my car and be on my way back. A lot of people die in this city, and I'm looking into as many cases as I can handle, and can't afford any hostilities or stalling in my work."

Rose Walters Rose opened the door wider and stood to one side "come in then we can have tea in the parlor." She said as one of the attendants scurried off to make the tea. It would seem the cop was rather reluctant to enter. perhaps they prefer only to enter during raids or to try and get protection money from the girls. This one seemed to have a problem with the place as an entity. That was not strange few cared when women lie Fiona or her turned up in a morgue.

Johnathan Hartman I removed my hat as I stepped inside, maybe I'd stop meeting so much resistance once I sat down, maybe I'd get this case over with quickly. Yeah, and maybe all the gangsters in this town would turn over a new leaf and become honest, hard-working tax-payers. There was at least one thing that was certain: the woman leading me to the palor had legs to the ceiling, and a walk that'd make your jaw hang there, almost as if you were to say "Baby, I'm yours." But the words would never come out, as if she had already slapped you for it. Sitting down I dug out my notepad to try and break my stare away, "thanks for the seat, and the tea. We'll just start things off simple: your name, how you knew the victim, any habits she had that you knew of. That sort of thing."

Rose Walters "oh, I quite sure that you know who I am as to the victim. She was one of my girls a young one her name Fiona Claire Hayes she was 25 a country girl looking to make it big as a singer." She started with as she poured the tea for herself and the cop. "sugar?" she asked after she put two cubes into her own cup. this man at least had not made any smug remark something in his favor for the time being.

Johnathan Hartman "Just standard questions Ms. Walters, and two please, if you wouldn't mind." Getting my mind back on track I began my notes. Trying to make it big as a singer then? Maybe sweetened up some small-time boss, tried to get a favour out of him to be permanent entertainment in one of his establishments, pushed a little too hard, he pushes back, she threatens to spill his dirty secrets, he ties up a loose end. It was worth looking into, but you always had to follow the evidence, not chase something that wasn't there. "Then assuming Ms. Hayes stayed here with your other girls, did she have any gentlemen caller's?"

Rose Walters Dropping to cubes of sugar into his tea she held the cup and saucer out to the detective. "Yes, Fiona lived her with me but the males who come here know the rules. if anyone harms my girls..' She gave him a sly smile "Well let's just say they do their penance." Crossing er leg the fabric of her dress moved revealing her silk stocking and well toned leg she had always been a dancer. "I know she had a taste for the bad boys and had been spending time with a long time customer. But Johnny Dillinger is a gentle soul, hurting girl isn't his style." Johnny had left Chicago to go do some business to the north, he didn't know where he was not that she would of told the cop. When he was here the papers made a big enough show of it so she had little doubt the cop would have known him for the ladies man that he was.

Johnathan Hartman It was the name Dillinger that caught my attention, but the leg that kept it. I had to reach for my tea to break my focus. Could this girl have been killed to get back at Dillinger? Send him a message? Maybe it was just another John that got angry that Dillinger had a reserved spot in her bed. "Were there any other men she was seeing at the time? Maybe someone not to kind to Dillinger?" I needed a lead, and nothing was coming up quick. I just needed the right questions, but what those were... who can say?

Rose Walters "There was a young German." She began, taping her lips with finger then snapped her fingers and whispered into the ears of one of the men who worked as protection for the girls. "Gerulf Albrecht Schreck he is prone to violence when drunk, he had to e tossed out n his ear a few times." She told the police man before she picked u her tea cup and blew the steam from its surface and sipping it slowly. "Is there anything else I could help you with detective? It is getting towards business hours and I suggest we take this to the back office or you go home lest your little honey pot get the wrong idea about you." The last comment was accompanied by a wry grin as she reached into the top of her dress and retrieve a small silver cigarette case. Taping the case on the table a few times she puled out a cigarette and laid it lazily on her red lips as she picked up the lighter from the table. "Care for a cigarette?" she asked him as she blew a smoke ring at the ceiling and held up the open case. So far she was surprised she had baited him several times but h had not taken he bait or made any comments about her or hr girls.. interesting.

Johnathan Hartman Her finger tapping against her lips drew my attention back to her face, and the beauty that it held. I had a name now: Gerulf Schreck. I couldn't help to think back to my theory on Brown. Perhaps some digging would connect these tunnels, but I couldn't force it. I had to be sure, and just followed what evidence was in front of me. "No honey pot, not even a beehive Ms.Walters," I tucked my notepad back into my jacket. Once again, something to do other than stare. "I don't have much free time with all the work I normally put in. Plus, it's usually safer-" Just as I looked up from seating my notepad in my pocket, I see her slowly pulling a cigarette out of her dress. As she lit up, the fire danced in her eyes, showing me what fire was already there. I could feel my heart damn near stop as her lips pursed and her chest rose from the inhale. "Thank you Ms.Walters, but I don't smoke. If you have anything further to add currently, I'll accompany you back to your office, but if you have more urgent matters at hand, you can call one of these numbers. The first is to the phone in my office, the second is to my house. Have a good evening ma'am."

Rose Walters "Pity, I would of thought the ladies would love a law man like you bright eyes but, I have no urgent business, since my 'Midsummer Night Dream' died on its feet lovely Miss. Fiona was to be one of my leads. Since that plan is sunk its back to square one. So I suppose you could say finding the guilty arty is my only real priority my other girls will handle the entertainment end for now." She said closing the case and returning it to its place. "But, when you find those responsible you let me know right away, will you?" As she spoke Rose took the paper with the numbers and er eyes darkened "I was to look into the cowards eyes." Rose had lot amber only a yer back this was a real run of bad luck, she would have to change it. She just prayed, not that God would care for a creature like her that this detective Hartman wouldn't turn her out on her ear or throw her in the pokey in the same stroke as trying to find Fiona's killer.

Johnathan Hartman "Yeah well, ladies don't care much for guns, and even less when they're pointed in their general direction." I readjusted my coat and placed my hat back on my head. Of course I snuck another peek at those legs when the brim of my hat covered my eyes. I'm only human afterall, and there was no telling what she was, angel or devil. If I wanted to find out, there's have to be another time. Right now I had a lead, and I needed to follow it while I could. "I'll come back here some time Ms.Walters, whether bearing good news or bad, I'll be back. Have a goodnight ma'am." And with a tip of my hat I was headed to my car. It was time to pull all I could about this "Schreck" guy, and see where the breadcrumbs lead me.

Rose Walters "See you then bright eyes, just be sure you don't bring you friends with with a paddy wagon party in mind." She said with a smirk as she puffed on her cigarette. Rose hoped her dangerous gamble would pay off and the ones who hurt Fiona would be brought to pay.

Rose Walters It had been several weeks since that detective had come in asking about Fiona. Since she hadn't received any visits from the cops to break up her action she guessed he hadn't turned her joint in, she was a small fish anyway. Her place had gone back to running as it had before but she still hadn't found a replacement for Miss. Hayes voice. With nothing to go on from what the detective had said it looked like she wouldn't be able to get justice for her girl the way she normally did to any who hurt her girls. She had been surprised when the detective had asked about the case, but figured by now he had gone on to more 'important' cases. Ones that didn't involve runaways who sang in a tawdry night club. Like the other lost souls of Chicago no one gave a damn about her, especially not the cops who were mostly on the take anyway. For all she knew the detective had found the killer and with his palms sufficiently greased he had let the case go cold and die.
