Once a manga gets liscenced people take it off the net and in my country sell the lisenced manga for outrageously high prices... scream

Damn it... Damn you lisencers taking away my free manga...

Well, I totally agree that the prices can be skyhigh, but I think it's good that they lisence it so that you can buy it and support the mangakas!

And besides, I think it's a big difference between reading a manga on the PC and buying it, being able to read it in the bus, or whenever and wherever one wants. At least that's my opinion smile

Amen! I don't know exactly why, but I just like being able to read my manga in book form ^_~ plus no offense to any other people, but I like to support the mangaka by buying their manga so they can create more! heart

Ah...this debate...

Part of me laments commercial liscensing...the companies don't do a good job, period.
The only one I've really liked was Del Ray's work.
Most of the time, Viz and Tokyopop and some of their contemporaries are riding a very lucrative fad and churn out the series without much consideration for the integrity of the original work.

If you compare and contrast the original to the English it seems like these companies have a mentality like "As long as the readers kinda get the idea of the story, its okay."
What turns out are absolutely ridiculous stilted scripts that often read like they were written by small children (I noted someone said in the manga forums that Tsuzuki from Yami no Matsuei called Terazuma an "Afghan Hell Hound." I died a little inside. Why did they do that? That is completely and utterly uncessary, may I add its not even funny so all it does it take away any dignity the manga had and degrades it to something on a very childish and frivolous level).

We've had this discussion here in this guild already about how Viz's staff doesnt seem to even read the series all the way through before
a) deciding to liscense it
b) starting to work on it

Its evident the translators and script writers havent done any preliminary homework into understanding the series when they spout absolutely off the wall versions of character names and botch their personalities by making them speak American slang.

Plus, I have a problem with their marketing tactics.
These companies are busy baiting suburbanite tweenyboppers, that's their target demographic.
Though its getting better, series are still censored to better fit the palates of American young and I suppose, their parents when it was never meant to be.
Moreover, manga is sold as an extension of the anime boom. Anime has not enjoyed that great of a reputation in the states, its still regarded as either porn or kiddy stuff with no substance.
Manga is largely regarded the same way by people not in the know.
What is this stuff? Picture books? Why aren't kids reading good books instead of comics? Is this like that anee-may stuff? This is like Pokemon!

While this says something about our culture and how we put value on certain material and not on others, the likes of Viz and Tokyopop are not helping matters by marketing manga in such a trivial way.
I walk into the bookstore and stare at the growing stacks of manga, and each one is as faceless as the next. The character and distinctness of each work seems to have vanished in favor of something really disposable and forgettable.

Maybe I'm just old and jaded and am hallucinating, but it just doesnt feel the same. I don't buy commercially translated manga. It doesn't feel right to me. It feels cheapened and childish.

But when it comes down to it, Japan does the same thing, really. Its bigger over there and is as corporatized as anything.

I guess my real problem is with the shoddy translations and script writing and censorship. American manga could also stand to be a little less fugly too, if you ask me -_-;

Anyway. YAY for liscensing if the integrity of the work can somehow be preserved and if the companies would stop dumbing things down and the fandom would stop being childish and demand quality.
BOO if companies are going to continue to censor and do half-assed jobs and if the a lot of the fandom is dead set on continuing to give loving manga a bad name.

(nods) I want them lisenced, but definetly depending on the company. I don't mind Angel Sanctuary.... but I really don't want Tokyo Pop or VIZ if it could be helped. I am not fond of the Godchild release though... not that I am not buying it anyway.

I think if any of them are going to be released next, it would be Boys Next Door because (a) this year alone has like, doubled, the amount of yaoi lisenced/published (b) it is a oneshot

This might be a rather odd, or even stupid question, but does anyone know if there is a fan club, or an address of sorts where you can write to Kaori Yuki personally, and tell her how much you liked her works?

Being a writer myself, I personally would think she'd love any and all fan mail she could recieve.

since only one of Yuki-san's series has been licensed, Angel sanctuary, we have to get our favorite mangas through scanlations. The "main" site for that must be www.sakura-crisis.net. There you can find Count Cain, Boys Next Door and many others. If you know more places where one can find scanlations, translations, pictures or fun stuff, please post here and tell us!^^

it doesn't have those broken links, right? sweatdrop

The old sakura-crisis was dead for a very long time (meaning a couple of years) sad . But they are finally back! (Well... Katze is... Sakura and Crisis aren't ..around...)

So, THIS is the new site! Go check out the upcoming releases page! More, never-been-scanlated Kaori Yuki manga 4laugh

As for buying manga, it's very difficult to buy manga (even comics) in my country (mostly because a lot of people don't know anything about manga). There is only ONE online shop where you could order but it's kind of expensive and if we were to order from another country, the shipping costs would double the price crying ...
