Be alert...

I guess my mind works funny. The very first time I listened to the Planets, I absolutely fell in love, even with the ones that are hard to listen to, like Neptune and Saturn. Now I'm listening to Pluto. <3 In orchestra, we're playing an abridged version of Jupiter, which, after listening to the real version 50+ times, just doesn't measure up. Actually, our entire concert's theme is Jupiter. We're playing the first movement (an abridged version again rolleyes ) of Mozart's Jupiter symphony, (I think it's no. 41? not sure) and Handel's "Song of Jupiter." Prettyyyyy! <3 My favorite movement switches between Mercury, Uranus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune, Venus, Pluto...oh...that's all of them, isn't it...So yeah. I guess I love all of them. =P

Sounds like a pretty awesome suite. I looked at the score and thought I could at least attempt to play it. I haven't heard it before but I am curios. Is there a cd that I can get from the library so I can put it on my ipod? If anyone knows the name of a cd that The Planets is on please PM me.

Jupiter is my favorite piece.
The Osaka Performing Orchestra or whatever their name is did an amazing job playing it.
It was also turn into a J-Pop song, one of the best ever!

What he did with having the choir offstage or whatever it was for one of the latter planets...so that when they start singing it's just like this creepy heavenly voice coming from nowhere...that's pretty slick wink There are a lot of cool effects employed throughout the suite, and it's really fun to listen to the intricacies of the whole thing. I saw this performed once. Amazing stuff.

I like how he never wrote one for Pluto. Because it wasn't a planet. And then it WAS a planet. and then someone ELSE wrote the one on Pluto FOR him. And then Pluto got demoted. So Holst's suite was complete once more. xD

Oh, Pluto. *pets*

This chick is hilarious. Any song name with Jupiter in it must be a good song. Lawlz. But seriously, she makes a good point about Neptune and Saturn (as well as pluto) being hard to listen to. I love songs like that, they piss you off almost because they don't sound congruent, but they are ^_^. I love all these peices, good topic!
