As much as I enjoy living, humans have ruined this planet and, while many are trying to make things better, we're still ruining it.
It's sickening.

That sounds like a pretty selfish quote. We don't keep animals alive just so we can exploit them. Or at least I'd like to think that's true.

Just like some people eat dogs.
And guinea pigs.

I don't think that's the only reason we do keep them alive, but for most people, it is the primary reason. In many minds, cows are not good for anything but milk and beef.
edit;; I think it means the animals we do eat. And if they go extinct, authentic Labrador burgers for all.

I come from a small town that, once upon a time, was completely cut out from the world. The only way for people to go from town to town was by foot or boat for years, and there could be months where we couldn't leave the town at all. Because of this heritage(which is more recent than some might believe), we have a stronger connection to nature. We usually let the livestock roam freely through town. We own animals for more than food or entertainment, we own them because in a way they own us as well. It's hard to explain. We just simply coexist with the animals in our area. Now, the wild animals usually stays clear, but that's just because of our cars and such.
