I wouldn't have been able to create the clipping mask if I hadn't made the shape on a blank canvas. The Image itself wasn't there... just canvas. XD

You can adjust the size of the canvas given to you even after it's created. At least, I could in my outdated version of Photoshop. Try checking the image menu on the top bar? I think it's also possible to use the crop tool to make the canvas size smaller?
