Seto wasn't sure they'd be able to manually open the doors onto any floor, but he didn't see a better option. Gently he climbed up onto Jounouchi's shoulders, opening the hatch and climbing on top of the lift. The cables shook further, and glancing to his side he saw a second cable had begun to fray. The lights in the cabin flickered. Seto shut his eyes for a moment, shaking slightly. He took in a deep breath, willing himself to calm down and focus on the moment. He then extended his arm back down toward Jounouchi, taking his hand and lifting him up and out.

"Okay..." Jounouchi breathed, leaning against Kaiba for a moment as he caught his bearings. He looked up after that, squinting in the darkness, only a flickering wave of light coming out of the elevator hatch. They were matched halfway to one of the floor doors, enough room for them to crouch in if the doors had been open.

He carefully crawled towards the closed floor doors, biting his lip as the elevator swung slowly with his movement, "...o-okay just... hold onto my shirt or something? I'm gonna try to pry the doors open."

Seto still had his doubts this would work. Perhaps the powers that be had blessed Jounouchi with hulk-like strength to make up for his lacking intellectual acumen. Barring that, the door would be a hard push with two strong, able bodied people. Nonetheless, Seto took hold of Jonouchi's shirt and tried to provide a bit of stability for him. The elevator kept moving up at its unnaturally slow pace, so Seto figured this haunting spirit didn't have much faith in Jounouchi getting that door open either.

((Bleh, been ill, not fun. Always something I'm afraid. xd ))

Jounouchi pried his fingers between the two doors as best he could, heaving with all of his strength, but they wouldn't budge. He cursed, trying a little longer, but soon the elevator was moving past the doors, and he had to pull back.

((Oh, starting to feel any better now?))

'Well, next plan? I don't think any of the doors will be any easier, even if I tried to help.' Seto asked, putting effort into not sounding condescending about the fact that he had been right.

((Yea, oodles better. Plenty of energy to go to battle with my landlord, but hopefully it won't come to that. Our radiators don't have knobs so we can't turn on heating. I'm not too fussed about being cold; I am, however, fussed about mould and water damage to my stuff and the flat. Saving all the correspondence my landlord is not responding to should be sufficient to argue that he has no right to dock our deposit in a year if their is any weather damage if he doesn't respond soon. However, that won't really help if any of our stuff gets damaged. Heating is inclusive with our rent so I fully get why the cheap, greedy landlord doesn't want us to turn on the heating we've already paid for. That doesn't make it okay. Hopefully it won't come to an actual battle though because that would really be annoying. xd ))

Jounouchi frowned to himself, thinking, "...well... there's nothing else the elevator shaft connects to? No like... emergency roof exit at the top or ladder to climb down or nothing?"

((Good you're feeling better. Yeesh on the landlord. I'm getting so sick of how greed runs things, it's ridiculous.))

'Not really, given how tall this building is none of that would have been advised in terms of safety regulations. After Kaiba Gozaburo even the windows were modified so that higher than the third floor they won't open. This building was structured for safety and to dissuade suicide, not to thwart evil ghosts,' Seto answered, frustrated.

((Same, I mean the whole government shutting down over healthcare is a huge slap in the face in terms of people not giving a damn about one another. That's pretty sad. I get taking care of yourself first, but the amount of greed it takes to justify exploiting your employees so you can afford a private island, jet, yacht, etc etc etc is disturbing.

EDIT: About an hour after I posted the landlord finally messaged us back and said he'd send someone out to look at the radiator. To be fair we've been nice in all our communications. I mean if this went on too long I'd have changed tone if we needed to, but I try very hard to be a pleasant tenant, even if the 'very hard' is quite apt sometimes.))

"Great..." Jounouchi sighed, going back to thinking, but coming up with nothing else.

((I know! It's like is your statement on healthcare really important enough to justify the jobs and finances that've been ruined with this shutdown? It astounds me how people can want to just keep such a crazy wealth gap there.

Oh, that's good that it sounds like things will work out then.))

'Well, we can stay up here on the assumption that this thing is gearing up to crash to the ground, and then try to dangle from the cables after the shaft falls away beneath our feet for however many hours it takes for rescue to come. Alternatively, we could climb back into the elevator and hope that it'll let us out on the top floor, at which point we can then try and come up with a new plan, or sleep in my office until morning. What's your preference?' Seto suggested.

((The desire to maintain a wealth gap is what's truly depressing. I don't necessarily believe in hell, but I'd like to imagine there is some sort of eternal punishment for people who exploit the hell out of those they think are lesser than them. You get maybe 100 good years on Earth in exchange for eternal damnation for being such a giant p***k. I mean isn't the 'the weak will inherit the earth' adage such a lovely little ideal? Is it sad the only reason I want faith is to punish rich people? xd

Hopefully, we'll see when the repair guy gets here tomorrow. The mould is seriously getting to be a problem. Hopefully it'll be our last major problem while we live here.))
PostPosted: Thu Oct 24, 2013 11:33 am

"..." Jounouchi wasn't particularly fond of either idea, "I guess... staying up here. If the elevator crashes, we have a chance that way at least, and if it opens, then we can jump back in real quick and run out."

((Haha, it's kind of sad, but it cracks me up all the same. I'm not sure about punishment for me, but I do want an afterlife full of knowledge, so when I die I understand everything I didn't in life, and when bad people die they can understand how much they sucked and feel guilty and make amends for it.

And mold is so dangerous!))

The chance that they'd be able to hold their body weight up for 5 minutes much less hours wasn't a very likely one, but Seto didn't say anything. At this height, and given this elevator's particular design, the cube would collapse in on itself in a crash. So the odds that maybe they'd be able to grope things and slow their fall enough to not die was higher than their chances of surviving in the elevator. Waiting on the roof made sense. 'Alright then,' Seto said, gently grabbing onto the cable nearest him, just in case.

((I guess if they can make amends - AND SUFFER! twisted *cough* - that'd be okay. They need to feel really really bad though. Like at least two lifetimes worth of misery and lowered self-worth - the feelings they imposed on others. I don't know if I want to know everything, but I do want to be happy, and content. I definitely want the 'in peace' thing. Wouldn't say no to knowing any grand schemes, realities, etc. Just, I don't think I'd need those to be content, I just want to finally be content. And not feel guilt, because I feel guilt constantly about people who have it worse. Every time my own struggles get me down I feel so guilty about people who have less, struggle harder, etc. I just don't get how the mega wealthy don't just absolutely loathe themselves everyday. Which is why I just have to assume they are the most terrible people in the world. A good person couldn't possibly be okay with having so much more than 99% of the population.

How dangerous it is is debatable, but I am mildly allergic so it's definitely bothering me. Cleaning daily is not an achievable battle.))

Jounouchi nodded, doing the same. His survival mode was wearing off now, and he was now simply left with an intense feeling of dread. This was different than the other things so far. Everything had been so fast and frantic, they'd just reacted, but now... all they could do was wait for a likely death. It was terrifying, of course, but if they were going to die, the thing that was the worst for him was that he didn't get to see Shizuka or Honda or Yuugi or any of his friends one last time. That he'd be leaving them behind, possibly to fend for themselves against whatever this thing was.

Well, not everyone... he wouldn't be leaving Kaiba behind, which didn't seem like it should be much of a comfort, but somehow it was. Not in some horrible, petty way where he was glad his rival was going down with him, but just... he was glad to have someone he knew, and even had some respect for, with him in such probable final moments. He didn't feel alone, at least.

Jounouchi hadn't realized how much he'd been brooding, feeling more and more hopeless as he continued bargaining for good things coming out of their deaths. Maybe this would all be over for Shizuka and the others? The entity would be satisfied just taking them? Maybe he just caused problems for his friends anyway?

((Haha, alright fair enough. I definitely want contentment as well, but for me, I don't think I could feel perfect contentment without answers to everything. I want to be able to know everything, but also be capable of maintaining and filing all the information cleanly, being able to recall things only when I want to and not be able to lose a memory or knowledge.))

Seto visibly tensed, Jounouchi as well, when the shaft finally came to a halt at the top floor. They stood motionless for a few moments, before the heard the soft creak of the elevator doors opening. Seto quickly dropped back into the craft and rushed out onto the top floor, Jounouchi close behind him. It wasn't until the doors had closed behind them, and the carriage could be heard moving away (at what was now its normal pace) that Seto realised just how cold his office floor was. It wasn't just cold, it was absolutely freezing. Clouds of steam formed with each breath they took.

'Well, this isn't good,' Seto muttered, unsure what to do now.

((Finally got heating fixed today, the guy was supposed to come Friday, then yesterday and finally today he actually showed - not that I blame him, I have no idea what the landlord has been telling him or if he's even actually called him 'immediately' when he said he would. So finally will hopefully stop living in a mould paradise. I don't think I could permanently live somewhere cold, it's just such a hassle. But yes, finally up to crawling out of the covers to actually type an rp response...which yes, has totally been inspired by my plight. xd

I used to feel that way, so I totally get that. I think lately I've just been so upset by just how awful the world seems that basically I can't work up the energy to want anything more than to just have the misery go away. My guess is if there is some sort of eternal after at the very least we'd have all the time in the world to figure out how to file info, and maybe take some notes to aid memory. xd I told my bf yesterday that heaven is paved in lava. I was singing to myself a song about heaven being paved in gold, one really random convo later and now it's paved in lava. Which he's much too excited about given that he's an atheist.))

Jounouchi was on all fours, staring down at the floor as he caught his breath. It hadn't required too much physical effort to jump back into the elevator and dart into this room, but it felt like he had just run a mile, simply from how panicked he had been a moment ago. He shivered, noticing puffs of visible breath appearing before him, the sweat that had been running down his forehead quickly subsiding.

Jounouchi looked up at his companion when he heard him speak, slowly sitting up on his knees and wrapping his arms around himself, "...out of one death trap and into another." he murmured.

((Good you got it fixed, even if it was delayed.

Lawl on the cold thing in the RP. I like it though; makes me think of good old horror games that were inspired by the cold (surprisingly a lot of them: Penumbra, Silent Hill Shattered Memories, Cursed Mountain...). And where did the heaven is paved in lava thing come from? XD))

'Let's go see if we can shut off the AC,' Seto suggested, not wanting to waste energy conversing. He helped Jounouchi to his feet and led the way toward the temperature control unit. Luckily that was at least localised to this floor.

((Only downside is the only knob we have doesn't work on the radiator in the bedroom, so we can't turn it off. That is the lesser problem though. They came back with a knob but it didn't fit, so no idea when they'll turn up with one that works. We've been meaning to get a wrench anyhow so that might do when we get around to that. At least as heating is inclusive we are using more than we need but we aren't force to pay for tons of heating we do not need.

The lava thing was basically the result of a discussion in which Tom felt heaven wouldn't be paved in gold as that's an impressive thing for mortals, not for beyond life - assuming he believed in such a thing. He said it would more likely just be practical, like concrete. I said maybe non-corporeal souls just float around anyhow, so they don't need a road they could touch, so I suggested lava. It'd look cool and impressive in a non-conventional way, and souls wouldn't be restricted to the same earthly laws (maybe). Generally just random nonsense. xd ))
