Millenium Actress - A Satoshi Kon movie - it's pretty amazing, but the ending is sad, eeeh. crying Paprika - Another Satoshi Kon movie, although I think this one is more widely known. This one is centred around dreams, and features some very strange and surreal imagery. Arashi no Yoru Ni - A touching, sometimes sad but ultimately heartwarming movie about true friendship surviving against the odds. The title means "One Stormy Night" and refers to when the two friends in the story, Gabu and Mei, meet. Not well known, but a must see in my book. It's on youtube in eight or so parts, I think. It's one that I'd almost kill to get a Western release for, though.
Tactics - Cheerful but somewhat sneaky folklorist solves mysteries and ghost stories with the help of the youkai he named. It's definitely better than it initially sounds, and a must see for anyone who has interest in Japanese folktales, stories involving kitsune, tengu and the like. With a bit of a twist, sometimes, and characters you come to care about. Le Chevalier D'Eon - A historical mystery, intermingled with some horror and fantastic elements, about the titular D'Eon's quest to find out about the truth of his sister's death, and defend his King and country. It's set in pre-revelution France, and features some stellar animation, in my opinion. (Except for the odd CG background.)
Ones I'm watching now and would recommend so far: Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei - With a title meaning "Goodbye Mr. Despair" this is slick, amusing black comedy. The main character, Nozomu Itoshiki, is a chronically pessimistic teacher who tries, at least once, to off himself. (But fails. Comedicly.) In teaching his class, one of his new pupils is the eternally optimistic Fuura Kafuka, who remains cheerful no matter what. Probably not for those who prefer their humour more, er, light hearted.
