Tell me, what is a human worth without a heart?

Reaching the barn, she blinked when the door closed behind her but she thought it was just the wind. Walking up to her gray stallion, her hand reached up and stroked the horse's muzzle as she gave him a lump of sugar in her other hand. He gently nudged her cheek before pulling back suddenly. Hearing light footsteps, she turned around to come face to face with her most hated enemy. Her eyes narrowed as he stood there, she had been shocked at first but now she was purely angry.

"What are you doing here?" she hissed, her knuckles turning white as she stood there.
He chuckled before speaking. "To see you.." he said his hand reaching out to stroke her cheek with the back of his hand but she slapped it away quickly. His expression became slightly sad. "I heard that you had locked yourself up.. word just got to me. You know there was nothing ever serious between me and Katherine, she left anyway." he told her as he shrugged, placing his hands on the gate that was behind her on either side of her, keeping her there so she couldn't run off.
"So what do you want now? For me to welcome you with open arms?!" she pushed him, but he stayed there as if nothing had happened. She now wished she had brought Brandon along.
"You still have that fighting spirit in you.." he whispered, with an amused expression.

Brandon sighed deeply, slowly opening his eyes. It felt as if someone had rubbed sand in them. Groaning, he rubbed his eyes but it didn't do anything. He knew he wouldn't be able to sleep until he was at the point of exhaustion. So, he might as well do something. Getting to his feet, he made his way over to the door and peered out, seeing no one. Well, whoever it was that had come to his door that gone that way so he did too.
Turning, he followed the path he thought the person had taken. He doubted very much it could have been anyone but his mistress since his master wouldn't have bothered to knock and he doubted that any of the other slaves would have either.
Pushing open the door, he was not surprised that it led outside. Spotting a barn, he remembered that she said she had animals, so that's where he went. Upon arriving at the barn, the sight that greeted him was one that filled him with anger.
He didn't recognize the man with Violetta but he didn't like it, and neither did she by the expression on her face. Stepping into the barn, he purposely knocked over an empty bucket, just to create some noise and let them become aware of his presence. It was highly unlikely that any man, free or slave, would try anything with a witness present.

He leaned in a bit closer but then they bother heard it. He closed his eyes and looked in the direction the noise had come from, pulling away from her slightly though his arms stayed where they were. James wasn't about to let her leave since she would most likely avoid going anywhere after this and climbing in through her bedroom window would not make any father happy. His green eyes rested on the newcomer. The collar on his neck told him immediately who it was. "A slave?" he laughed lightly before looking back at her.
Relief swept over her when she realized it was Brandon. Her expression softened for a moment before the man in front of her spoke again. "Leave him alone, James and let me go. You know perfectly well how I feel about you." she said in a cold tone as a smile appeared on his lips.
He stepped closer before whispering into her ear. "Or do I? We were happy together.. remember?" letting one arm fall while the other grabbed her forearm as she struggled to free herself but James had always won before and that didn't change now. His eyes went back to the slave. "Why don't you tell him to leave so we can talk in peace?" he asked, wanting her to listen to him for once.

Brandon watched as the pair finally noticed him though, much to his annoyance and anger, the man didn't let his mistress go. He could see that the man was determined not to let her go. It wasn't hard to read from his stance. However, when the man spotted his color and laughed, he tensed though he wasn't sure why. He was more than used to people treating him with contempt because he wasn't a free man.
Turning his gaze to his mistress, he saw the relief in her face. He couldn't leave her. He had to do something, but what? Listening as his mistress spoke, he turned his gaze back to the man, waiting for a response. But when the man stepped closer and whispered something to her, Brandon took a few steps forward, ready to launch himself at the man if he tried anything. When the man grabbed her forearm, he stepped even closer, glaring at him when the man looked at him and told her to tell him to leave. He wasn't going anywhere, despite what either of them said or may say.

"Don't tell me what to do." she snapped at him before jerking her arm from him, successfully pulling it away from him this time but he only grabbed hold of her shoulders then. "We'll talk.. soon enough." he told her before letting her go since she was fighting to get away from him. James glanced over at the slave before narrowing his eyes. Taking a few steps back, he then disappeared through the back door.
Violetta watched him leave with hatred in her eyes before she looked over at Brandon, her eyes softening. "Thank you." she told him quietly before she slowly walked up to him. Giving him a small smile, she then shivered slightly. She knew James would be back but for now she would just hope that he would take his time. Lowering her head for a moment, she wrapped her arms around her waist, guessing that it would be best if they both headed back to the house.

For mine seems to have been destroyed.

Brandon watched tensely as Violetta pulled away from the man only for him to grab her shoulders. He stepped forward again, glaring at the man. Unfortunately, his instinct to protect his mistress battled against his instinctive fear of making a free man angry at him. After all, if the man got angry and started beating him, there would be no one to help him.
When the man stepped back away from his mistress, Brandon continued to watch him, still glaring at him. Only when the man left the barn did he relax. Turning his gaze back to his mistress, he watched as her hard eyes softened. He nodded at her thanks though it wasn't necessary. He was just doing his duty. However, when she shivered, he stepped closer to her, placing a hand on her back and watching her with concern. It was obvious something was wrong but his self-inflicted silence didn't allow him to ask her.

Tell me, what is a human worth without a heart?

Violetta looked up at Brandon when he placed a hand on her back before she rested her head on his shoulder, closing her eyes. She didn't want to go anywhere now. Seeing James brought up the memories that she had spent night and day burying into the deepest, darkest corner of her mind. "Please.. don't leave me." she whispered softly. Of course he could completely reject her in this vulnerable state so she would simply go back to her room and lock herself up once more.

For mine seems to have been destroyed.

((tis ok))

Brandon watched as she rested her head on his shoulder, her eyes closing. He didn't know what to do, having never been in such a position before. Oh sure, women had sought comfort from him before, but never like this. Whenever they were upset and came to him, they would take him to bed and use him again, and again, and again, until they were too exhausted to think about whatever it was that had upset them. But this, this was different.
When her plea reached his ears, he just decided to go with instinct. He slid his arm around her shoulders, resting his chin on top of her head.

With her eyes closed, her slowly calmed down after wrapped an arm around her. It took her a few good minutes but she eventually pulled away, "Sorry." she whispered, her head lowered. She wasn't used to depending on others for anything. "Let's head back.." Violetta added softly as she glanced up at him before taking a few steps towards the entrance. She wasn't planning on going to dinner tonight but she would probably have some little dish brought up. Other than that, she would stay away from most of the inhabitants of the house.

For mine seems to have been destroyed.

James on the other hand had a plan going underway. He had sent a messenger to Violetta's father letting him know he would be coming for dinner to speak to him. If he could win her father over, it wouldn't be long before she would be his again, even if it wasn't what she wanted.

Brandon watched Violetta patiently, waiting for her to calm down. He knew how traumatic something like that could be so he wouldn't rush her. When minutes passed and she finally pulled away, he lifted his head off hers and let her go. He shook his head at her apology -in his mind she had nothing to apologize for- but followed her when she started walking towards the door. He couldn't blame her if she felt awkward for seeking comfort from a near-stranger, a near-stranger who happened to be a slave and so her social inferior, but he didn't hold it against her.

Violetta's father looked up at a knock on the door of his study. After his meal, he'd returned to work. Now, he got to his feet and crossed the room, pulling open the door. He raised an eyebrow when he saw one of his slaves standing next to a man he'd never seen before.
"This man says he has a message for you, sir," the slave told him.
After dismissing the slave, he stepped back, allowing the messenger to enter. "What is this message?" he asked.
"James has requested to dine with you," the messenger told him. "He has something he would like to discuss with you."
Violetta's father frowned at the request. He took a few moments to consider before slowly nodding. "Tell James that if he can come up with a good reason why I shouldn't have him castrated for breaking my daughter's heart, he is welcome to come."
The messenger nodded before quickly leaving.

She was planning to go back up to her room, but she saw a few maids whispering when they saw her, she didn't pay a whole lot of attention to them though. Walking through the garden, she glanced over her shoulder to make sure Brandon was still there. She didn't know what he would do.. whether he followed her or went to his room, it really was up to him.

For mine seems to have been destroyed.

Once the messenger came back with the words that Violetta's father had sent him with, he simply smiled. He knew how to take care of this. Going to his bedroom, he got dressed, picking something that would be proper for the occasion. Since he had broken Violetta's heart, he could fix it as well, besides, she wasn't letting anyone near her anyway so he was the only one.

It wasn't long before he sent one of the servants to get his horse saddled. He could handle this rather well if given the chance. For now, he waited inside for his horse to get saddled so he could then go back.

Brandon loyally followed his mistress from the barn, glancing at the maids he noticed whispering, most likely about them. Looking back to Violetta, he kept a reasonable distance between them, at least one that would be considered proper. After all, a slave walking right beside his master -or his master's daughter in this case? It just wasn't done!
When she looked back at him, he simply looked back at her. He didn't smile, didn't frown and didn't glare. He just looked. His expression wasn't blank but it was impossible to read. It was impossible to know what he was thinking because he wasn't thinking anything at all. He'd learned that was the best way to survive as a slave. Just don't think.

Violetta's father sighed deeply as he eased himself back into his chair. Had he done the right thing, agreeing to meet with James? He wasn't sure and that worried him. In business, he knew all the right moves, knew every situation and handled them perfectly. However, dealing with family was another matter.
Looking up at the painting of himself and his late wife that hung on the wall, he watched the picture wistfully, as if at any moment his love would speak to him, telling him what to do. But, the painting never changed. Her face remained in that contented smile. "Oh, what would you do?" he asked though he didn't expect an answer. His wife had always known what to do when it came to family. That was one of the many things that made them such a great team.
Getting back to his feet, he decided it would be best if he started getting ready for supper, and his meeting with James.

She wished she could figure him out. He was always so quiet but she was sure that he could speak.. though she didn't know her reasoning for it. Her pale skin looked strange in the sunlight, too bright. Shaking her head, she walked into the house, smelling food from the second she entered. Stopping for a moment, she wondered if Brandon was hungry.. then again her father probably wouldn't allow him to join the dinning room table, so she wouldn't be joining him either.

"You're free to do as you wish.." she told Brandon quietly before she headed up the stairs, deciding to go to her room. She didn't want to be around her family at the moment. Opening the door silently, she looked into her dark room.

For mine seems to have been destroyed.

Mounting his horse once it was ready, he rode the short way over to Violetta's home. He knew her father wasn't going to welcome him with open arms but he was grateful that he had agreed to meet with him. It shouldn't take too long to convince him he was only there to help, after all, he really did want to be with Violetta again.

He sighed as he saw her home. Dismounting, he handed the reins to one of the servants before straightening his black jacket. Walking over to the door, he calmed down before knocking on the door, having no idea who would answer it.
