Kaine

Gustav kept his hand on his sword, but did not draw. He looked down at the princess, wondering what information about the thief she was holding from him then at the panting prisoner. What was wrong with him? The horse of the Lieutenant was beginning to get restless. He was spooking it. A vein throbbed on Gustav's forehead as he though quickly. This was not good. They were wasting time here and the mist would creep in soon. They were a mere mile from the forest edge! "We're almost out. We can stop then and figure something out." Gustav grunted. "I am sorry Princess, but my orders come straight from your father's mouth. I cannot go against them for you. We will be safe from the mist once we pass the treeline..." He glanced behind him, and his eyes widened. The dark purple haze was creeping towards them as he spoke. The sun was touching the horizon! "Get on the horse now! The mist is here!"

With the shout, Kaine let out a yell, spooking the horse he was on, and it threw both Kaine and the lieutenant off of it's back and ran for the exit of the forest.

Aaaand, just to throw it out there, the mist does not differentiate between friend or foe. It will kill any human/humanish beings who breathe it in. Animals are safe though.

Cassie saw the mist as soon as Gustav announced it. There was no more time for negotiations, clearly. As she hurried to the horse again, she heard hooves pounding the ground looked in time to see the horse belonging to the Leiutenant and Kaine racing for the exit. At this rate, they wouldn't be able to get out all together, would they? Her thoughts drifted to Kaine again. Would he be okay?

She looked around quickly, trying to think up something, anything. Again, her eyes found her bird atop the tree. Strangely, it didn't seem too alarmed of the mist, being high in it's perch. A thought occurred to her. The first night she had stayed in the forest with Kaine, the mist didn't reach them from high up. Would they be safe if they too weren't on the ground? Perhaps if they were high enough. She decided to trust her little bird. It hadn't done any harm to do so yet, anyway.

Quickly, she hurried back towards Kaine.
"I think I have an idea. Hopefully you can use it somehow..." She whispered to him before taking off towards the tree with her bird perched in it. "Release the horses and climb the trees! Higher elevation will help protect us!" She called to her father's men as she started to climb. It was much easier to do so than last time, due to her dress being lighter. "I hope this works, anyway.." She muttered to herself as she reached the first high branch. Her bird had moved and perched itself on an even higher one, which made Cassie decide to keep going.

Kaine

Kaine hardly absorbed Cassie's words. The toss from the horse had rendered him breathless, and had knocked the lieutenant unconscious. Gustav called out to his men, "You heard the princess! Climb as high as you can!" He jumped off of his horse and ran for his lieutenant, snatching him up and making for the nearest tree. He would have grabbed the thief too, but he knew he couldn't carry both his first in command and Sapphire Eyes. He was on his own. As the men climbed for their lives, Kaine writhed on the floor of the forest. As the moon rose, sounds of bones cracking and snapping filled the air, along with Kaine's screams of pain and desperation. He was changing, but not as he had before. The shift before was smooth, fluid, and not as painful. This however was a forced shift, brought on by his inability to control the beast within.

The screams began to warp into howls and Kaine's form began to right itself to reveal a monstrous, black beast with three inch fangs and deadly sapphire eyes. It's heaved breathing could be heard from the tops of the trees where Gustav and his men sat, staring down at the monster. Gustav looked across at Cassie, wondering if she had known this all along. Had she been concealing a monster? Or had she unknowingly been traveling with one.

As the mist began to fill in around the trees, the large, wolfish creature backed away from it's deadly vapors, but there was no where to go. It could not climb, it's awkward body frame and massive weight anchored him to the ground. The blue eyes searched for anyway out, locking onto Gustav's. Anger shot through the wolf's body as he remembered the hostility. Escape no longer mattered. That man's death was all the beast could focus on now. He ran for the tree, forgetting about the toxic fumes around him, and began to claw at the tree trunk, trying to scramble up to get to Gustav.

Cassie watched wide eyed with barely concealed fear as she saw the monsterous creature where Kaine had once stood. So this is what a werewolf looked like. It was certainly a horrid sight. A bit of sadness welled up for him. Becoming a wolf seemed bad enough, but this? Although the wolf seemed nicer, and more in control. This behavior didn't much seem like him at all. A thought dawned on her. Was this why he had spoke about killing them, and why he had wanted her to leave? Pushing the thoughts away, she watched as the creature clawed the tree where Gustav and some of his men had perched.

It seemed he couldn't exactly climb, which was good. Her eyes shifted to the deadly mist surrounding him. Would he be alright? A small laugh escaped her. A werewolf was trying to kill her father's loved men, and she wasn't worried about them at all. She was a horrible princess. Maybe it was best not to go back at all with those thoughts. She couldn't imagine what her mother would say, just seeing her. Or what her father would do with the knowledge of a living werewolf. Kill him? She wouldn't let that happen.

At the thought of that, she focused on the fumes again. Although they didn't seem to be affecting him yet, Cassie was still worried.
"Kaine! Stop! Find safety from the mist! They aren't worth it!" She yelled, although she didn't think he would be able to hear her. Or recognize her at all in this state, for that matter. But it was worth a shot.

Kaine

Gustav watched as the wolf beast began to thrash on his tree, and for the first time ever, he began to feel fear. He needed to get higher up, but his Lieutenant was still unconscious. "Alex, wake up." He pleaded, but there was no response. Kaine jumped up to snap at them, but they were too high up for him to reach. his attempts were not working, so the beast backed up. Gustav wondered what was going on, when he saw the monster suddenly lunge forward and slam it's head into the tree trunk, rattling it and sending a violent jolt to the branch they were on.

Kaine backed up for another go when his ears caught a voice. He turned his head to look up at the girl in the tree, sitting with the blue bird. He locked eyes with hers, but though the eyes were the same bright color of the man it had been before, there was nothing of Kaine in them. No recognition, only hunger and death. He turned, his new target acquired, and lunged for the tree Cassie was in, ramming it and shaking it down to it's roots. The mist was building, it covered the forest floor completely now.

Gustav saw this, and feared for the princess. If she was knocked down from the tree, she would breath in the mist. He had to get the beast's attention. As the beast backed up for another ram, Gustav took the crossbow from his lieutenant's belt and took aim. He let the arrow fly, but as he had, Kaine lunged forward again, racing for Cassandra's tree. The arrow missed it's mark, but hit instead the rear of the monster, causing it to turn in surprise and instead of slamming it's head into the trunk of the tree, it's whole body rammed the tree, causing a more violent impact, shaking the tree considerably more.

A cry of surprise escaped from Cassie's mouth as she was tossed from the tree branch she was on. Luckily, she landed onto a group of lower branches that seemed to support her weight. Although she hit hard. A shriek of alarm pierced her thoughts of the pain. Her blue bird flitted around her head, trying to get her attention, then plummeted downwards towards the beast below. Cassie's eyes widened seeing it about to lunge at the tree again.

This time she braced herself for impact. Although she knew she wasn't that strong. Getting a quick idea, she grabbed her dagger and stabbed the branch she was on, trapping her dress in between. It wasn't the best of plans, but she hoped it would help her stay on the branch.

Although she wasn't expecting the tree to begin to fall. Cassie yelled in surprise and freed herself from the dagger. Unsteadily, she stood up and ran as fast as she could towards the next standing tree. It was a long shot, but she planned to jump. Being highly elevated was a must at night. She didn't care if she had to run from tree to tree like a monkey, as long as she could survive the night. Then Kaine would turn back afterwards, that she was sure. Mostly.

The princess jumped from the branch, just barely grabbing hold of a lower branch. A sigh of relief escaped her. Quickly, she scrambled upwards and balanced herself onto the branch. Her eyes scanned the forest below. Perhaps if she could keep up, she could race from branch to branch, allowing the men to escape. Sir Gustav would never allow for such an act, she was sure, but she didn't care. She just knew she didn't want Kaine to be attacked and killed, even if he was currently a beast.

Kaine

The animal that was Kaine tried to get at the bolt in his hind quarters, but the movement above him took his attention. His prey was moving to another tree, and he was not going to loose it. He turned to pursue, the arrow in his rump forgotten. Again he tried to climb to tree, his stomach growling almost as loud as he was. All this beast seemed to know was kill and eat. He seemed to be slowing down now though. His breath came heavier and more labored as he scrambled at the base of the tree, saliva dripping from his lolling tongue.

Gustav watched in silent horror as his princess nearly collapsed into the toxic fumes of the mist along with the felled tree. This monster had to be brought down. He wanted to go after her as she moved from tree to tree, but he still held his lieutenant, Alex. He situated the unconscious man carefully on the limb so that he would not fall to his death, then tried to follow Princess Cassandra, imitating her monkey like mode of transportation. The beast moved from tree to tree from below, but the arrow in it's upper thigh seemed to have slowed it down. That or perhaps the mist. Either way, the better the odds were that the beast would be easier to slay the longer it gave chase.

The rest of the garrison watched in feat and confusion as both their captain and objective moved along the feeble highway of tree branches and away from them. Many worried glances were exchanged as they wondered what they were to do. Not a single one of them had ever imagined the predicament they were in now. They sat in their trees and waited for dawn.

Keeping light on her feet like she had been taught, Cassie jumped from tree to tree. After the first two trees, she found the transition a bit easier. She wasn't quite sure where she was headed. Maybe the campsite? Or the tree house he had taken her to the first night? She shook her head to clear her thoughts. Kaine didn't seem to be himself. If he didn't recognize her, what made her think he would hesitate to destroy the sites he had made? She had to find somewhere else.

A strange sound caught her attention as she scurried to the other side of the tree she was on. Daring a glance behind her, her green eyes caught sight of Kaine first. He seemed to still be going after her, although a bit slower than he had been before. Good, maybe the garrison had the brains to use this chance to flee back to the city. Highly unlikely, but she could hope.

Snapping out of her thoughts, her mossy eyes moved to the source of the strange noise.
"Sir Gustav! Get your men to safety! Don't worry about me." She called before setting off to the next tree, traveling faster than she had. She couldn't stand feeling as if he must have thought she couldn't fend for herself. She didn't want to be a helpless princess, she wanted to fend for herself and be free. With that resolve in mind, her pace picked up, hoping to lose him. It was selfish, surely, but she didn't care.

Cassie changed course deeper into the forest. She wasn't sure where she was going, besides away from the city and any of the previous places Kaine had taken her to. She didn't want them destroyed. The sound of trickling water caught her attention as she hurried through the branches. A stream? An idea came to her and she followed the direction of the stream, hoping to come to a larger body of water eventually.

Kaine

As the chase ensued, Kaine became more and more out of breath. They came upon a river, the cold water seemed to repel the indigo mist, it gathering mere feet away from it's banks. Water seemed so good right now. Kaine lumbered over to the bank, his tongue lolling out of his black lips as he panted. At the edge, he plunged his massive head into the water and sucked in mouthful after mouthful of the cold water. The chill of the water bit into his stomach, his inflamed body contrasting the cold, making his gut feel as though he had swallowed a large stone of ice. He stopped drinking and waded into the water, finding it easier to breath that out on dry land. The shallow river rushed around his hulking forearms and legs. When he reached the middle of the river, he lowered himself into the water and lay there, panting. He was done chasing. The wound in his shoulder and rump pulse with his rapid heart beat, but the water helped with the pain.

Gustav, despite the reassurance of his princess, followed suit, leaping from tree branch to tree branch. He was not going to lose her again. He had never failed a mission, and he was not going to start now. He spotted a soggy looking mass of black fur in the water below as he clambered onto a tree near the riverbank. Was it dead? He peered closer at it. No. It was still breathing. He looked back up, following the movement of the princess and continued to pursue, though the panic in him had died down. She was going to get herself killed at this rate, either she would fall and break her neck or breathe in the poison. If she survived the night, she would surely starve herself or be eaten by whatever other monstrosities lie in this gods forsaken forest. "Princess, please. If you stop, I shall cease my pursuit and we can sit and rest and wait until morning comes. Then I promise to listen to your needs and we can come to an agreement without causing any more trouble. You have my word!"

The heavy footfalls appeared to have slowed and ceased, and Cassie glanced behind her once she heard water. A small smile of triumph flashed across her face. Her plan had worked! Not only was Kaine not chasing her, he had gotten to safety. She shook her head, still a bit in disbelief of her thoughts. A mythical beast was chasing her with the intent to kill, and yet she was more worried about his well being than her own. Still, she knew he wouldn't stay this way forever. Once the full moon disappeared from the sky once more, the man she had come to know the past few days would reappear again.

The extra sound of footsteps brought her back to the present. Not wanting to leave Kaine out of her sight, Cassie climbed upwards. Promise to not cause any more trouble? That was a relief, they were more of an annoyance than a help to her. She knew her demands to be left alone in the forest wouldn't be met, but she had to figure out something.
"...Okay, I'll be here." She replied finally as she climbed.

Cassie settled up in a high tree branch and watched the dark figure in the water. Why did he chase? Instinct? Hunger? Movement caught her attention out of the corner of her eye: a squirrel scurrying higher up the tree. Bits of red higher up caught her attention too. Apples? Upon closer inspection, she noticed there were some growing beneath her as well. She tore one off and tossed it towards the river, watching it land by the water's edge. She knew it wouldn't be enough of a meal for someone his size, but it was better than starving. She threw a few more, watching as they landed both by or in the water.

Grabbing another one, she settled onto the branch and watched the stars in the sky. It was funny knowing she could get comfortable on such a hard narrow surface. She wondered how many hours had passed.

Kaine

Gustav sighed in relief as Princess Cassandra agreed to no longer flee. He watched her as she climbed higher into the tree, wondering if he should do the same. He looked down at the indigo mist, seeing that it stayed below the six foot mark. He was safe at his current height, so he decided to stay put and conserve his energy. His muscular frame was slim, but not as slim as Cassandra's and climbing would tire him out more. Especially after the little tree top chase he had given. Settling on his limb, he looked back at the furry mass in the water. It seemed content to stay there. Good. I can deal with you in the morning as well. He thought.

Kaine lay in the water, causing a slight dam of sorts, the water rising up against his backside and flowing around him. He situated his face so that he would not drown and closed his eyes. He was tired, and was ready to give in to the darkness that tunneled his vision when a plunk in the water nearby caused his ears to perk up and his eyes to open in search of the noise. He spotted a red orb floating near the bank, but one sniff told him he would not like to eat it. More came flying through the air towards him and he snarled at the flying fruit. He saw where they were coming from! That little piece of meat he had been chasing was still here. He growled at her and moved to stand, but soon found himself back in the water. His arms did not want to hold up his body, neither did his legs. He fumbled in the water a few times more before giving up and settling down. Now more exhausted, he managed to scoot himself to the riverbank and collapse in the mud there, torso in the mud, waist and legs still sitting in the river. The mist remained feet away, the air clear and breathable where he lay. Sleep overtook him, and his labored breathing slowed.

Gustav watched the beast struggle in the water, ready to unload another bolt into it's hide if it dare give chase again, whether or not it angered the princess. Luckily, the animal seemed to be lacking the strength to pick up the chase, and when he was certain it was asleep, Gustav allowed himself to relax. He would not sleep tonight however. He needed to remain awake in case the monster woke up or if Cassandra decided to sneak away.

Soon after she finished her apple, Cassie's eyes began to grow heavy. But she couldn't go to sleep, what if something happened? She glanced down at the still form in the water. The apples she had thrown were untouched. She dared not throw anymore, realizing the faint snarl may have been from her throwing the fruit.

Her eyes sank lower, to where Gustav had settled. She didn't entirely trust him not to let any more arrows fly at Kaine, even if he appeared to have grown tired of chasing her. A melodious chirp caused her to look up. Relief flooded her seeing her bird. It was strange, she trusted a wild bird more than she did one of her father's men. What a terrible princess she was. She shook her head of the thoughts and drifted off to a light sleep, trusting the bird to warn her of anything bad.

Kaine

As the moon moved painfully slowly across the night sky, Gustav sat back and kept watch over the two slumbering charges. He had been trained to stay awake for days on end before growing too tired to function, and this would be the second night without sleep he had endured. He would be fine for another two nights before exhaustion overtook him. Hopefully, he would not have to push himself to that extent. He hoped to be able to deliver the princess back to his Majesty the next day. As for the thief... Well, circumstances had changed. He was indeed a werewolf, and that could only mean one thing to Gustav. He watched the still form in the water with a steely, calculating look, putting together puzzle pieces in his head. Yes, he was one of the few who knew about the other kingdoms. The ones also trapped in seclusion by the deadly indigo forest. The ones the king kept secret from his townsfolk. When he did get back to the kingdom, he would need to seek private counsel with the king. Something was amiss in these woods, and Gustav did not trust the werewolf. Especially if he could not control his transformations.

As the sun began to rise, the indigo mist evaporated, leaving the forest floor clear and safe for travel. The moment the moon was down and the sun became the larger source of light in the sky, Kaine's body began to shift and pop back into human form. There was no screaming, no grunts of shouts of pain this time. Kaine remained still, motionless in the water as he reverted back to normal. Blood mixed with the water, swirling in the current as it drifted downstream in the gentle flow. The shift had reopened his wounds that had clotted during the night. He no longer sported the arrow in his shoulder, as it had most likely wriggled loose and fallen away during the chase, but the arrow in his thigh protruded into the air as Kaine lay limo on the riverbank.

Gustav watched the transformation, transfixed, though thoroughly disgusted at the sight. He turned his head and looked up at where Cassie had been through the night. "Your Highness, are you alright? I believe it is safe to come down." He called to the tree as he himself descended from the tree he was in. He feet touched the soil, damp with dew, and went over to the trunk of the princess' tree, ready to assist if necessary. He kept his attention on the tree, but kept awareness in the direction of the slumbering man who was so recently a raging beast. "Interesting friends you make..." He mumbled more to himself about the acquaintance the princess had made.

Nahh, it was pending a time skip. I don't expect long posts all the time. Short posts can be just as good as long ones. It's not really the length, it's the content. As I've said before, you are an excellent rper.

Voices stirred Cassie from her slumber. The first thing she saw was the lightened sky. No moon in sight, or stars for that matter. The last few twinkling out of view as she watched. They had made it through the night. A sigh of relief escaped her and she felt her body relax. Strange, she seemed to be on alert even while resting. Her body ached from the branches she had slept on. Not something she was used to as of yet, that was for sure.

Slowly she stood up, holding onto the trunk of the tree for balance. The absence of the deadly mist caught her attention. It truly was morning after all! Figures below her caused her to look down, noticing a sleeping human Kaine and Gustav waiting for her to come down. But what worried her was the strange red tint to the water surrounding Kaine. Surely it wasn't from the apples she had thrown the night before. It had to be from his wounds. That was motivation enough to hurry down the tree.

Once her feet was solidly on the ground, she passed Gustav and headed straight for Kaine. As she thought, the red was blood. His wounds needed to be treated, and most likely needed to be out of the water. Although she liked the forest, she didn't think it's river water would be good for an open wound.
"Hey? You may want to get up." She said gently as she planted herself down on the bank. As much as she would hate to admit it, she wondered if it would be best to bring him into the village. At least as far as his wounds were concerned.

Kaine

Gustav stood by the tree as Cassandra came down and seemingly ignored his very presence. Instead, he turned and followed her as she went straight to the unconscious werewolf. As she sat in the mud next to him, Gustav leaned up against a tree. He would let her get her questionable friend up, then they would discuss plans.

Kaine's world was dark, suffocating, and very cold, yet somehow on fire. The milky blackness was everywhere, trapping him in it's clinging tendrils. A voice sounded, somewhere beyond the darkness, and he tried to swim for it. He knew the voice, but she seemed so far away, and he felt so very tired. The voice would still be there in a few hours right? He could rest for a while first. He stopped fighting the blackness, letting it wrap him in it's freezing, flaming blanket.

Kaine did not respond to Cassie's suggestion. He remained silent. The only noise to be heard was the raspy wheezing of his breath as air flowed in and out of the mist damaged lungs. A shiver raked it's way up his spine, but other than that, there was no movement.

Seeing this, Gustav pushed himself from the tree he had been leaning on and came to squat next to the princess. "He appears to need medical attention. I propose we make haste home, but you seem to have an objection to that." He chose his words carefully, not wanting to offend her, but trying also to make her see reason. He hoped she made the right decision.
