"Here they are," I say softly. It's taking everything I have not to give up right now and leave with the treasure I managed to find. She'd known that I would go for the most deeply personal items I had. Pretending that she hadn't would have done her a disservice. This was worth it, though. "Please. Take good care of them."
1. Blankie Bear's Missing Ears: SUCCESS After searching through many dresser drawers. After even more cries of "are you sure this is the box you saw them in last?!" The most important ears a bear made from a blanket has ever known were finally found at the top of a closet in a plastic bag.
2. Blankie Bear's Missing Eyes: FAILURE I had been hoping against hope, wishing against all odds, that I had once had the foresight to put the round teal buttons that were Blankie Bear's eyes in the bag with his ears ... But, alas, that had not been the case. I spent many fruitless hours tearing apart every box, bag, and drawer in the house. To my great disdain they continue to evade me. Perhaps forever.
3. That Weird Cracked Quartz Crystal My Brother Found When He Was Four: SUCCESS One would thing that something as small and innocuous as a piece of quartz would have been harder to find. I did, actually, think that and had resigned myself to complete failure before I'd begun searching. As if by magic, though, the first place I looked (and the most unlikely now that I think about it) was where it was- Sitting in an envelope with a picture of the very brother that had given it to me when he was a little kid. Funny how that works, right?
4. Dad's Theater Egg: FAILURE Why?! I fussed and pulled at my hair in frustration. SURELY a fist sized egg made out of marble would be an easier find than the treasure before it. It's not even like my place is such a disaster that I can't find things that have been put on display. That's right. Display. And, yet, it's gone. I grunted, placed my hands on my hips, and pouted; all in the hopes that whatever force had made my brother's crystal so easy to find would help me out with the egg. No dice, though.
5. The "Momma Pillow": FAILURE "Oh, Momma Pillow." I had sighed wistfully as I reached my bed, "I knew you wouldn't let me do--" She was gone. The crib pillow I had held onto since birth. That I had poured tears and snuggles and giggles into for thirty-years. The very pillow that my own child now had the smaller counter-part of ... Momma Pillow. She'd betrayed me when I needed her most. The b***h.
6. My Favorite MLP Toy from Childhood (Starhopper): SUCCESS Ah, at least Starhopper was easy. I reached over to the right side of my computer desk and stroked her yellow and gold tinsel hair lovingly. My constant companion. Overseer of all things Lolli's Internet. I picked her up and placed her delicately with the other treasures collected.
7. A Wedding Ring: SUCCESS Oh gracious. It's so very good this was where it was meant to be. Losing this would have meant a whole lot more than simply becoming dead. Of course, he need never know I'm offering it away as treasure ... Right?
8. Lock of First Born Child's Hair: FAILURE Looking for this particular lock of hair has always been a challenge. We know that a lock of my daughter's hair exists somewhere as a keepsake ... As well do I know that if it came down to it I could always take a pair of scissors to a friend's child's head. There is no excuse for my lacking in this treasure. It just wasn't in the cards. I guess, when it's time to be honest, I just wasn't trying hard enough.
9. Catslug: SUCCESS When we met my birthfather's family for the first time it was like finding a piece of myself that I didn't know was missing. The most immediate, but also most surprising, connection was the one to my step-mother. We had so much in common. After we got home from that visit there was already a package waiting in the mail. Inside was an ivory sculpture made of polymer. It was half cat and half slug. It has always had one home- The computer desk. Reaching over I lifted it from it's spot and brushed settled dust from it's head. If it's Best Desk Friend was being offered then it needed to be as well.
10. First Ever Won "Best Mother" Award: SUCCESS It had taken some time to find this, but the effort was well worth it. As I lifted it from it's box and unwrapped the miles of bubblewrap that cocooned it; I smiled the warmest, silliest, grin. My fingers ran over notches between each Toddler Sized building block and took note of how none of the colors matched. On the very bottom block a strip of tape with now faded marker scribbles is still stuck. She assures me that it definitely says "Best Mommy". Best. Treasure. Ever.
( These are weird. I know. Please don't judge.)
