I love when there is internet in the airport. I'm hoping there will be internet in Heathrow if I get there early, free internet that is. Birmingham International charges, SFO has free internet though. I like them better thus.

Hahaha, YAY! I'm glad you found them. What a great trip finale. And also glad you like them or else I'd feel bad for talking them up. xd

Aww, I'd say I'd be DYING to go to this Akihabara, but considering most if not all of the stuff must be in Japanese that probably wouldn't do me any good. I have one FMA doujinshi that's in Japanese (I assume, haha, honestly I wouldn't know if it was secretly in Chinese or something) and haven't ever gotten around to getting it translated. Still the place would probably be something to see. Did you get awesome souvenirs (in general, not necessarily just at Akihabara) of your trip?

Yea I'd say I'm the master of paranoia but I've got nothing on my parents. However that probably explains to you where I got it from. I think I'd trust Steam enough, the more broke I get the more trusting I get because I don't have things to lose honestly. xd I really do like things hard copy though, so if the price stays (or goes down) I'll still probably get the orange box for Portal/TF2/Half Life when I come back in August and do something about my homeless condition (I don't want to send mail to where I'm couch crashing/storing my junk, I'll feel enough of a burden). I might look for L4D/L4D2 on Steam sometime though, whenever it seems ridiculously cheap.

I am looking forward to Munich/Amsterdam though, guess I'll have to get through my dissertation first.

Yea it was a good episode.

Yes, it was such a pleasant surprise; they didn't even have it in the LA airport.

I know, it was so epic. XD And even if I hadn't liked them (which was unlikely, considering I love both Kit Kats and green tea desserts), I still would've been happy for fulfilling my big goal on the very last day. Green Tea Kit Kats was literally the first thing I decided I wanted to buy in Japan.

Ah, I suppose it is a bit different when you're capable of translating Japanese, but even before then, I liked Japanese doujinshi for the pictures. XD And it will take me forever to translate anything, but at least it's practice... But yes, I got tons of awesome stuff. I got like five DS games that aren't in the US, two stacks of books/manga, a bunch of action figures, a wallet that looks like a gas mask (I got Karma a grenade one), a yukata, and a kitsune mask, plus a bunch of smaller things.

Oh, oh, speaking of Steam, Team Fortress 2 is now permanently free, so you literally can just sign up for Steam and download it! It was announced when they updated with the Meet the Medic video, which I've been waiting for for two years by the way and was hilarious.

You must tell me about how the trip was when you're done!

Yea, I'm sorry but with as much as airfare costs I really think they should all offer complimentary wifi. At least an hour of it. Birmingham Int was awful, when my flight got delayed I had to pay 10 pounds for 24 hours worth of internet (that was the least amount they had, because people just plan on spending 24 hours at an airport! And no it was period not just a cumulative amount of time to an account, which I could maybe have understood). My flight then got cancelled within the next hour. So I only used an hour of it, because I wasn't going to hang out in the airport all day after that. I had only paid initially because I had no other way to contact home and tell them my flight was delayed and I couldn't be sure when I'd land (as I had a transfer I would now surely miss), if I'd known it'd get cancelled I could have just done that from home. Was a bad addition to an awful day.

Well glad you liked them and they were more than just goal worthy. Man now I want some. xd

Yea I did buy my doujinishi for the pictures, I just wish I could read some of them sometimes. Granted half the time the plot would probably end up disappointing so it's probably good that I can't. I can enjoy the pictures and have an illusion that there is a better plot written in then what I'd actually get. sweatdrop But yea sounds like you had quite the spending spree, are there not international codes for DS games then?

OOOOOOOH, is it really? It's going to stay permanently free right? So I can sign up in October? Because omg if I sign up now I WILL play and my dissertation will eternally suffer!!! Karma has definitely been going on and on about meet the medic, heh. I'm tempted to watch but maybe I'll wait until I know more about the medic, and the rest of the characters. Might be more entertaining then. We'll see. I do need to start writing my dissertation at the very least before I play anymore games. I hid my Sims 2 disk. Ok sure I know where it is, but I'm convincing myself I don't. Now if I could only get bejwelled off my phone. It's my unavoidable, ocd game addiction. I play and don't even realize it until about 5 levels later. stressed

I shall, hopefully it'll be good. My friend just went to Amsterdam and brought me back stroopwafels which were THE MOST AMAZING THING I'VE EVER TASTED! Maybe not, bug ugh they were pretty damn amazing. I'm definitely going to gorge myself no those first thing. xd

I totally agree. Especially since a lot of people in different countries can only use internet to contact home with important information. Geez, that's so ridiculous, stupid internet fails. Tokyo was really nice because after you registered your email address, you had permanent free internet. It would 'expire' after three hours, but then you just had to re-confirm you were using it and it would start again.

Haha, maybe you can order them online? I forgot, have you had them before?

Haha, doujinshi plots are normally awful. At least the sex ones are easy to translate though. XD "Aaaah, ooohh..." And for DS? Nope. 3DS has them, but not normal DS. I think region codes are stupid anyway. Sony's got the right idea, none for PS3 or PSP. I think Microsoft has them, and Nintendo has them for Wii and 3DS. Boo.

Yes, it is. And yes, you may. Heehee, that will be so fun to play together! Can't wait then, so hurry and get on your dissertation! Haha, it's really quite alright to watch the 'Meet the' videos now. I watched all up to Meet the Spy before I played the game (I watched Meet the Spy before I even knew what Team Fortress was), and I still loved them. Hell, they were just an introduction to the characters and gameplay a bit more than anything, and you can always watch them again once you play the game and are able to understand everything. It's like you watch them and get the general point and characters and definitely understand the hilarity, but then after playing, you just understand all the other little things included in the videos. Either way, I've watched them all a number of times, and they have never lost their entertainment value. Lawl at the Sims and Bejeweled though. I remember when I used to be addicted to those, but I got addicted to less casual games instead and promptly forgot about them. XD;;

Hmm, looked stroopwafels up and they sound absolutely amazing. Speaking of the most amazing foods ever, in Japan, Hiroshima style okonomiyaki was like OMG wonderful. I'm gonna find a recipe for it now. (side note of lawl, Firefox said stroopwafels was spelled wrong, and when I right-clicked to add it to my dictionary, the only listing they had as a correction was Stormtroopers) XD

Yea my friend brought them back from Japan last time she was there, that's how I'd gotten them. I have a feeling even if you find them online they wouldn't be the cheapest thing to get a hold of. I'm not that desperate for them. Definitely not enough to buy something online.

Yea I think of the ones I've been able to read I've only run across one or two decent (I wouldn't say good, I'd say decent) plots in the batch. Just curiosity kills me. Yea my friend just told me the 3DS has regional codes but DS doesn't, ah well at least for now you can play DS games. As for Microsoft, to you mean as in PC or as in something else? Because no PC games don't have regional codes (movies do). That's how I found out I could buy the Amazon UK games rather than the more expensive Amazon.com games. My other CA friend here has been buying her games here. She can't buy her movies/TV shows here but she can buy her games. So I guess it's only Nintendo (and I dunno about Xbox? I thought they did but honestly I don't know anyone whose ever needed to trial that) that does that then.

Well I probably don't need more distractions at the moment, so I'll put the 'Meet the' videos on hold for now. Any reason the game is free now, that seems too good to be true? It's funny, Sims runs so much faster on my laptop and that's become a problem. I was planning on reading during load times, but load times virtually don't exist anymore. So it became too unproductive, non-stop play. xd Bejeweled is on my phone though so it's kind of this compulsive thing I can do when I have nothing else around to distract me. I've gotten to the point where I have to leave my phone at home when I go research/study now.

Yea I had a friend in Amsterdam a week before the friend who brought me back the stroopwafels went over, but I hadn't bothered to look them up. I also didn't really look at what exactly they were until I was getting ready to eat them. Then I thought, hmm, this sounds amazing. I bit into it and omg, it was like, biting into delicious swirly heaven. I ate the package of 10 in about 2 days. My plan was to eat 2 a day. Nope. Now it was my turn to look something up and okonomiyaki has me drooling. I was satisfied that it was around 11pm and for the second night in a row I wasn't hungry this late. Nope, that's over. xd

Stroopwafels = Stormtroopers. Love it!

Ah, right. Yeah, fair enough. XD Now that I've tried them, I don't think I'd be willing to get them online either.

Yeah, it's kind of sad, but you kinda gotta determine what the best doujinshi are, not by what has the best plot, but what has the best characterization. They almost always have virtually no plot (or just small ones to get the sex going), so it's all about how the characters react to the situations that make it interesting. One of the best ones I've ever read was just about Thief King Bakura getting captured and held captive. He was wounded and too weak to summon his ka, so a guard just raped him and stuff. What was the interesting part though was he made friends with a snake that the guard ended up killing, and Bakura got so angry he suddenly summoned Diabound and killed the guard. Diabound wasn't his original ka; it was the spirit of the snake he had made friends with, so it was like an origin story for how Bakura got such a powerful ka. A sexy, dirty origin story. XD But I mean, that was so minor of a plot, yet it was one of the best doujinshi I've read... just sad. *shakes head*

Ah, no, I meant Microsoft as in X-Box. XD Not a big deal for Americans, but that actually sucks for Japanese, because they miss out on all the good X-Box games like we miss out on all the good DS games. Then again, X-Box is no where near as popular in Japan as DS is here so yeah. Oh, actually just did some research, and it looks like that while 360 really is region locked, it has a number of games that aren't. Weird.

Alright, fair enough. XD Probably for the best; the videos are so awesome, they would probably make you give in and just start playing TF2 now. Um, my guess for the game being free is because it's such an old game, yet it is still extremely popular and people are still always buying it. They've made more profit than I think they ever intended, plus they have virtual items that you can buy. They're very expensive (even by like, Gaia standards), but people buy them anyway, so they're still making a lot of money off that. I think it would actually benefit them at this point to just get more players in to buy their items and such, and for their players to join free. Plus TF2 was really just an Orange Box game to begin with; it was just one minor game within the other games, so they weren't really expecting to make much money off it in the first place. That's just how Valve works. XD

Haha, lucky. Sims is super slow on my stuff. Then again I don't think I've tried it on my gaming computer, so it'd probably be fine there. I just kinda lost interest. Haha, silly Bejeweled though.

Haha, how sad. Yeah, okonomiyaki is just amazing, especially Hiroshima style. I like it with the batter and egg, light on the cabbage but lots of sprouts, then with some bacon, lots of soba, and then lots of sauce and nori sprinkles. Ugh, but no mayo or green onions, that's just gross.

Yea they are good, but I don't even think I'd order my favorite foods online. I kinda just deal with whatever food is available in my area. Like stroopwafels totally trump green tea Kit Kats for me, but I wouldn't even order those I'd expect. Can't be sure though, atm I have the knowledge that I'll be in the Netherlands in less than 3 months.

Yea, for me the believability of character relations is definitely crucial. If the plot is so bad it makes it seem like it's not even those characters anymore, because those characters just couldn't fit into that plot in any regards, I'm not going to like it. Even if the art is amazing I'd only be interested in saving panels rather than the doujinshi in its entirety. I'm more character based than plot based. Currently watching this movie Mysterious Skin, in part wanted to watch it because it did kinda have this hot/pornish vibe. But after an hour that gets more than old. However I do like the characters, as minimal as they seem to be. So I think in the end I might walk away from this with no attachment to the story, but still a bit of fondness for the people in the story. I have about 22 minutes left to go though. It could end big. razz

Mkay, I always forget Xbox is Microsoft. I think most people just tend to go with what they have. Like there are still a good number of DS games in the states, and if there weren't it'd probably just make DS a helluva a lot less popular. Plus Xbox is very dependent on user database to make their games popular, which is why I personally never got into a lot of Xbox games. I tend to be more of a solo gamer (it's why I've always been a big Sony person, it makes better games for the person playing with neither virtual or real friends). So depending on certain demographics and laws Xbox games wouldn't be as appealing in certain regions (or just allowed period).

Well that's good, and I do think that's a better system. Allow people to pay for free just charge for game enhancements. At the very least though I wouldn't get into a game that required more than initial payment, like WoW. I mean when you think about it it's a game that might eventually cost you hundreds and hundreds of dollars. No game should cost that much, ever.

Yea I was kept games on my desktop (once I had two computers, before it's all I had) and my laptop was for school, work, internet. However when my desktop died my laptop is all I had. So I gave it a shot thinking the games would be slower on this because I have less hard drive space (and it always seemed the more expansions I installed the slower it got) but actually it is super quick. Other than brief periods or phases though I always fall out with Sims during school.

I love green onions (heck I just love onions), but I'll agree with you on the no mayo.
PostPosted: Wed Jun 29, 2011 5:09 pm

Hmm, after hearing about stroopwafels, I'd consider ordering them online, though mostly because I don't have any real intentions to go to the Netherlands (there's too many other countries I wanna visit first), and I'm more curious to try them than anything. But hell, I bet you could find them in a specialty market or something in the states, so maybe I'd look that route first.

Hmm, I'm a firm believer that a character can remain character in virtually any plot, even if being in character for them is literally just being confused and weirded out the entire time. To me that's just a challenge, one that most doujinshi/fanfic writers do not meet. So yeah, I'll give even the worst plots a try to see if the characters are believable, though that doesn't generally end up happening. But either way, I'll still enjoy doujinshi if the art is good, because to me, that's about half the entertainment value of them. The just don't have enough meat to them to be supported by story or characters more than art. Mysterious Skin, huh? Never heard of it. Sounds... interesting? XD

Eheh, well I'm not most people then, seeing that I had five must-buy games in Japan while I was there. I actually refrained from getting the tens of others that caught my interest because they're so expensive there. I understand that localization costs are often greater than expected profits, and it would be stupid for companies to translate them, I really do. But damn, that just really sucks when they're not releasing a game you're really looking forward to, especially a sequel of ones they've already localized before. I don't know what I'm gonna do with the Ace Attorney game I bought there; it's a text adventure, so it will probably take me years to translate. A friend of mine got lucky, because her favorite game series, Fatal Frame, the fourth one wasn't released here, but some insanely dedicated fans translated it and created a patch so the translation could be added and the region code removed, as long as you bought the Japanese game. I really, really hope that happens for Ace Attorney, because yeah, it's great translation practice, but the series is just too important to me for me to want to spend that much time translating instead of enjoying it. But anyway, my point is, I understand why realistically it's ridiculous to expect gaming companies to release all games in different countries, or even just all games that did well in their home country, but I just wish so much that wasn't the case, because I am most certainly not happy with our DS and PSP lineup here (yeah, PSP, you know how few good games it has here? It's games are awesome in Japan, so awesome I might've considered getting the system if they had them here), or even Wii, and I'm not happy with Japan's 360 and PC lineup. To me it's focusing so much on profiting off the 'safe' games that it's refusing to share cultures between countries, and gaming styles at that. Did you know they weren't going to release Ace Attorney here at all, because visual novels were so non-existent in the states? But Capcom got some balls and tried it, and Ace Attorney made DS the leading visual novel system in the US, and not just leading, but successfully leading, as in people here are actually loving these games and buying them! I mean, who knows how much FPS could catch on in Japan if they got gems like Left 4 Dead and TF2? I didn't like FPS until those games, and I had Halo and Resident Evil and all that s**t. And OMG I just realized how much I am ranting, so sorry. XD;;

But anyway, I do agree on Xbox. I'm more of a solo gamer too (hence why I'm not poor and homeless, given how many party games my favorite systems have), and Xbox just has far too many games that rely on online to give you the full experience. Plus having to constantly pay for online, and getting only a fraction of the downloadable content you get on PC? No thanks. I like playing online for a select few games, ones that are too fun not to play, but really more fun when you play online, but overall I need far more single-player games. And even though Wii is definitely the 'play with people in real life'/party system, it has far more single player games than Xbox does, and DS is just crawling with them, probably as much as PS3 has. Honestly if I liked Sony's 'style' of games more, I would probably be more of a Sony person because of how independent it is. But anyway, Japan is an extremely social community with more internet usage than what we have here. Xbox would fit them great if they actually had some good games for it, and maybe were willing to try some more western-style games. Not gonna speak for places like China and stuff, but at least places where internet gaming is feasible, I wish Xbox or PC had a better lineup. South Korea's got the right idea there.

Yeah, I mean TF2 was already totally fair (pay once, you can play online forever), but it's even better to live off optional content. And they don't even make you feel bad for not buying the content, because they don't sell levels or upgrades or anything. You can buy hats, and you can buy weapons, and most of the hats, as well as all of the weapons, you can also get without buying them; it's just difficult and rare to get some things. I think that is completely fair, especially with how cheap the game was to begin with. Oh, and those of us who bought it? We get a free hat. XD Kind of lame, but at least it's something so we're not just completely slapped in the face after spending money. I agree about WoW though. That's just ridiculous, subscription fees. I don't believe in those at all; I believe in one-time payments. If WoW was like $100 instead of $60, I'd see that as fair since you can like play forever and it always updates, but not just having to pay as long as you play. Or hell, even paying an initial charge, then paying a fee for updates would be more fair than it is now. And I'm afraid more and more companies are starting to go that route, since it's most profitable, and they'll try to keep you engrossed forever like WoW and Farmville so you keep paying. That's what I love about Valve, they've got the right idea with what's fair; sometimes they're even unfair to themselves, and even though their games rely so heavily on internet usage, it's still a one-time cost. That's another reason I like Nintendo too; they do have online, but they still focus on keeping games with the old cost system, paying and playing. They even encourage you to play with friends still. You know, that system that *doesn't* require more than one copy to be bought to have multiplayer? I miss that with Xbox and Playstation.

Haha, nice, you must have a nice laptop then. Mine didn't even have a good enough graphics card to display Sims 3 without the character glitching if you changed their height or weight. XD But I think game speed is more about RAM than hard drive space anyway.

Ew. Hate all kinds of onions.

Oh bollocks, I responded to this yesterday. Y u no post Gaia!!! stressed

Anyhow...take 2. Yea most things can be found in specialty markets, just sometimes those are hard to locate. Except for like Japanese things (at least in CA). Also it depends on if it is imported or replicated. It's kind of weird being in the UK and buying products that are the same but not. Like Snickers taste exactly the same. Kit Kats do not, I realized the other day I don't even remember really what normal (or American at any rate) Kit Kats taste like. I do, and have from the beginning liked the UK version (I couldn't say comparatively which I preferred), but they are different.

I dunno, I've had some people throw characters into such abstract universes, and I don't think enough established depth exists for the characters to justify or guess how they'd act in the AU. Even just as confused. I think if a character is well established enough and fleshed out enough then you can probably mostly do that. However it depends on how much character you have to begin with. I mean even the most solid writing can't convince me that I'm believably looking at the character I know if it's too far removed for origin, and there is not enough established to depict how they'd react in such a case. I read fanfiction to get more of the characters I love when there isn't enough series (I generally only read for series I've completed or series that are on-going and I'm current with), so that is prime. However I have to at least be interested in the plot they are inserted into. Like I don't really care what Kaiba would be like as a fry cook who had never heard of duel monsters. Even if you could make it believably Kaiba, I do also need to have an interest in where the plot is going. Unlike fanfic, Doujinshi does have the art element to support it. So I would be more tolerant of plots I'm less interested in for pretty art.

Mysterious Skin ended up being pretty good. It's about this guy (played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, currently I'm on a JGL binge. Yesterday it was the Lookout and today I just finished The Juror) working as a hustler who was raped by his little league coach as a kid, and this other guy who thinks he was abducted by aliens as a kids, and they cross paths and yea. That's the description on the film so I'll leave it at that in case you want to check it out. It's based on a book which I want to read now. I feel the film had a Chuck Palahniuk vibe, but not quite as abstract. However the book for this was written by Scott Heim or something like that. We have it in our library here, so perhaps when I finish my dissertation.

Hahaha, the rant is fine. Yea, I think things should just be released, or at least not region blocked. And if people want to try their odds with translating they should be able to, and then perhaps if companies see enough marketable interest they can take on the project themselves. It's the region blocking that I find really annoying. Not just with games, but with video as well. And a lot, especially with video, comes down to region law though. Like awhile ago was reading about a movie that will get banned in the UK. Sure you'll probably be able to stream it online, and possibly even be able to get hold of DVDs that you can jailbreak. It won't be released here though. I don't think there should be boards and government agencies making the decision over what individuals can personally choose to entertain themselves with. I mean I think the whole "violence" and "sex" that video games and movies cause is an absolute crock.

Yea I can enjoy online games or in person games, it's just not something I'd fit into my life well very often. So I'd end up not really able to get into those games because they are dependent on coordinating. And yea I don't really like Nintendo style, which is why I don't particularly like the Wii. The only Nintendo system I ever really liked was Game Cube weirdly. I think in part the GC controllers were PS similar and it was a lot easier for me to adapt to. Sony is just set up better for my various handicaps, so it's always been my preference. But again as far as line up and what's available goes I think it's primarily going to come back to region laws. What companies want to do isn't going to matter if it's going to be a hassle dealing with local restrictions. And internet kinda fails in the US, more reasons I don't want to go back home. But hey, at least it isn't China. Gaia was one of the few things my friend could even get onto for the few months she was working there.

Yea I definitely agree pay once is reasonable. Farmville isn't a pay for game, I wish it was, I would quit. I NEED to quit, but because it's free my OCD let's the addiction live on. The only thing that ever motivates me is money. Farmville even gives you tons of the cash currency, which a lot of the app games don't do. All the Playfish games cash currency is buy (or offers - which generally cost money or have some sort of catch) only. I never upgraded to PS3 actually, all the games I've liked (and honestly haven't been on it much in a couple years) were still being released on PS2 so there was no point. I'm more aware of how Xbox is really rigid about a lot of facets of multiplayer gaming because most of my friends who currently game use Xbox. Except for a few of my friends where we still keep pulling out the Game Cube, which I tolerate as it's the primary non-Sony system I love. Although, I will always have a soft spot for Sega Genesis, the first system I really gamed on (besides Atari - woo, pong!) but it's been years since I've touched one of those.

Yea I think it is about RAM, and I think my desktop had s**t RAM, though I don't remember what it was. I guess my graphics card is fairly decent as well, but all I know about it is that it's by Nvidia (I have a sticker for it on my computer). I'm hoping to get a better laptop eventually though actually. This one is almost 5 years old. I recently got the hard drive rebuilt for free though, so I should be fine for another year or two if I must wait to be more financially stable (hoping that day will come).

Mmm...onions. razz

Ooh, that sucks. You had to write it twice?

AZ doesn't have so many Japanese markets. I know of one, but it's pretty small, and then we do have a grocery chain, but it is for any Asian country, so it has two aisles dedicated to Japan, and then the rest is everything else. Japan's not too big here, not surprisingly. And I know what you mean about the same products being different; Coke tasted a bit different in Japan. It was less fizzy and less sugary, I think. Almost reminded me of Coke Zero; didn't care for it much. Other than that, only 'American' thing I tried was Kit Kats, and they tasted the same if they were the original flavor.

Oh, yes, I could see your point there. I was going under the assumption that I'm reading a story that has characters in it that have already been reasonably developed. I mean, yeah, obviously if you don't have enough character to work with, you can't really keep them in character to something you don't know. However, I'm not the same when it comes to plots; I would honestly read that Kaiba as a fry cook story (which cracked me up, by the way, imagining Kaiba standing at a little Spongebob grill with a little apron and a little hat, and a little Spongebob spatula) if it was written well and the plot and characters moved in an interesting way. I guess the main 'description' plot, while it is something that will attract or detract me to looking at a story to begin with, is not something I let determine if I would like the story or not; I need to see how it plays out. If there were less stories to choose from (as in there were few enough that I could read all in the world), I wouldn't even use the description of the plot to determine if I want to read it or not.

Hm, Mysterious Skin actually... sounds pretty interesting. XD I guess that goes right back to my above point though; the description catches my interest, but I could still hate it. Want to try seeing it though.

Yes, region blocks are the worst. It's like you do all that work to learn another language aaaaand... you still can't play foreign games/watch foreign DVDs in exchange. Sucks for you. Or even between countries that speak the same language, it's ridiculous. I mean, if one stable government sees it fit to show something to their country, can't the other stable governments accept that? It's not like those same countries don't already have porn or anything!

Dude, not weird. Gamecube's my favorite console of all time. Probably the only system that beats it all together is DS. Everyone always either talks about the glory days of N64 or the great success of the Wii, but no one remembers poor Gamecube and its Pikmin and Wind Waker and Smash Brothers Melee and Falsebound Kingdom and just so many others... I think my Gambecube collection is also biggest game-wise. And well, if I ever go to China, I'll just be thankful to have Gaia at least.

Haha, oh, true, but Farmville makes plenty of money (I think they're the highest profiting 'game' in existence right now), and by adding new content they get you to keep coming back. At least so I've heard.

Well considering I didn't notice until a day later it was probably rather different. Which in some ways was better than losing something immediately, and trying to recreate it right away but knowing it's to a lesser extent. xd

Yea we have a lot of Asian shopping areas, so there will be full stores devoted to one culture. And of course SF has Japan town which I actually still haven't been to. I've been to the better known Chinatown several times. Yea I think the States when on Soda, but England is fairly close enough. France however is not close, and I'd have a much easier time giving up soda there.

Yea if a pairing doesn't have a lot of material surrounding it I'm more likely to give more things a chance (I mean yea ok, even depending on the scenario in which Kaiba ended up a fry cook I might even try that out). However if it's just abundant in stuff I will get picky on plot. Especially with slash, because so many fics tend to forget plot. And most fanfic writers who don't (can't) develop a plot don't develop characters (I feel that's a bit of a harder skill set). So it's basically porn between two random figures whom you have no reason to be attached to other than they supposedly bear the name of a character you are attached to.

I liked it well enough, even without it having great shock value. I watched it there: http://www.novamov.com/video/4d83b3bf3a907 Video quality isn't amazing but it's decent (especially for Novamov which usually has crap quality). If you get a chance you could check it out there and see if you even like it before investing in finding it in high def or something, heh.

Yea my dissertation does touch around the issue of licensing in the 17th century. The whole issue of letting people choose what acceptable for themselves I think is beyond valid, and still problematic even today, which in some ways seems absurd. But the problem with "stable" and government is that's relative and subjective. Most governments even if stable in power aren't stable in opinion, rarely in agreement. Governments that even agree amongst themselves, how are they suppose to agree with other governments? It's ridiculous, but whatever. Heh, although to be fair, I don't think schools/educators would expect that "all that work" was supposed to be contributed towards games and movies. xd

Play Station (PS2 - honestly in terms of what I look for the two don't differ much) is definitely my all time favorite console. The Gamecube probably follows, even if my mind has this fond memory of the Genesis it just probably wouldn't be second. The Wii is probably one of my least favorite console of all time. Although in theory, it's the Dreamcast, however in practice I never actually touched one. Other than Sims I don't think there are many games I actually prefer on PC. The perspective is better in Sims on PC, but for games that require a higher level of control and movement I prefer a system more prone toward controller play.

Yea Farmville makes a lot of money, but not for actual game play. It's kind of like the hat deal with TF2. And yea that is definitely why it's TOO addictive. The game is constantly progressing. It's in general an easy enough game to put down and come back to and it'll be right where you left off, but the fact that more is happening makes it harder to leave off. In the next couple of days though I'm going to back off the Farmville on my 2nd FB (ugh, yea, don't ask) and then work on lessening play on my primary account. This thing is a menace I must fight!

Ah, well that's not too bad then. I would've personally been pissed though. XD

That is one thing I love about California. I want to try going to Japan Town. Been to China Town and Little Italy in New York, but that was the extent of my 'mini foreign countries within the US' experience. Wait, so the soda in France tastes crappy?

Exactly. In theory I still think that even in strange plots characters can be in character or a plot can be good with crappy characterization, but often bad characters and bad plots go hand in hand, because it's all just from bad writers. So I guess I idealize too much, and it doesn't work so well in practice, but I like my idealizations anyway. Totally get what you mean about the porn thing though; porn is far more interesting (and more of a turn on) to me if I know the characters, and a lot of times with fanfiction, even though I do know the characters quite well, it doesn't seem like those characters, so suddenly it's these two strangers with familiar faces bumping uglies.

Haha, thanks for the link. I plan to see Karma tomorrow, so maybe I'll make her watch it with me.

Ooh, that sounds interesting. And yeah, governments just fail a lot... angst.

Hm, for me it goes... Gamecube/DS (can't choose between the two really), Wii, Nintendo 64, Playstation 2, PC, Gameboy Color, Gameboy Advance, Playstation 3, Xbox 360, Playstation, Playstation Portable, Xbox. Can't really include any other systems in that, as I have not had enough playing experience to make an opinion. Plus systems older than the first 3D generation are difficult to compare with the newer stuff, since there's no denying things have improved extremely greatly. I also am counting 3DS with DS at the moment, since I only have one game for it right now and it's a remake. But yeah, I pretty much prefer consoles on everything except for FPS and games like The Sims.

Yikes, Farmville is evil. And Cracked reported today that those Facebook games are extremely bad with your private information.

Haha, Epcot (Disney World) was a bit of a mini foreign country experience, it was also my first foray into international soda. Which is where I learned other countries can't make soda as well as us, though some are more adept than others. Soda in France was drinkable, definitely better than some of the things I had tried in Epcot (I can't recall if France was an option there, but I actually had soda when I was in Paris) but not as good as the USA or UK. Well, in my opinion. I suppose the only thing I can say factually is that they taste different. I suppose it would be up to individual preference to say whether or not that difference was not as good. I didn't think it was as good though.

Exactly, and as I don't really have a visual imagination it's not even familiar faces. xd

Yea I have limited experience with most systems, and quite limited with handhelds. I don't even know which Gameboy I've played on, and I've only ever played Mario Kart and Tetris I think, whichever it was didn't really like the system. on DS I primarily have only played...God I don't remember what it's called. Harvest Moon or Animal Crossing or I dunno, a farming game. Which I liked well enough, but I think in general I just wouldn't have much use for a handheld. With rare exceptions anytime I'm in a situation to play with one I could be playing with a full system set up and thus would probably prefer that. I guess if I tried to rank things it might be Playstation 2, Playstation, Gamecube, PC, Sega Genesis, Xbox (very limited experience with Xbox games though, the only thing I've played to any extent is rock band - which I do prefer the Xbox version to the Sony version I have to say)...I dunno...Atari, haha. Really wouldn't even put the Wii on my personal list honestly. And I like a lot of N64 games but I REALLY hate that controller so I haven't had a lot of success playing them, particularly as I've never owned the system and only get limited amounts of time trying to master a game with a controller I can't quite grip. I've never played a PS3 game thus far.

Hahaha, that's not new, and actually I read that article and Cracked has a lot of things wrong in several categories (like I could actually point out the flaws in research while reading) so I'm going to say I have to say I was pretty disappointed. And again, FV and other apps stealing your information was a big hype thing several months ago, so that article is also really really out of date (my mom emailed me in March going OMG Farmville will steal your information!). The thing about FV, and just Facebook in general, is that it only has access to information that you give it. Most people don't even put phone numbers or addresses on FB, so at best it usually gets your name and email. The primary thing third party sites do is target you for advertising, but Facebook in general does that now. And frankly I don't care. There are going to be advertisements anyhow, and in general I'm poor so I won't be bothered by them. It makes no difference to me if the ads are about bands I actually like rather than say Justin Bieber. Farmville and other apps aren't installed into your system, so they don't have access to what's outside of FB. But yea a duh point made in the article is pretty much if you put it online it's probably not 100% secure. However the world is getting pretty impossible to navigate offline, so basically you just run your risks with whatever security type information you put out there. I don't pay real cash into FV, even if I was that addicted I'd go buy cash cards from Target I wouldn't give them my credit information. So Farmville has no more private information on me than you could just get in a Google search. People freak out when they hear "OMG THEY HAVE MY PRIVATE INFORMATION" and don't think about the fact, oh yea, I put that stuff all over the web...I don't care about that stuff. Just ya know, make sure your email address and your bank passwords and codes aren't the same name and you're probably good. xd

Epcot? So is that the Disneyworld in France? That's too bad though other country sodas aren't as good. It might just be the tastes we get used to growing up with our soda though.

I have a totally visual imagination. Not sure if that really benefits me though, because then it gets awkward imagining characters acting so weird.

If it was a farm game, it was probably Harvest Moon. Animal Crossing is more a neighborhood game. For me handhelds are just as fun as consoles, so I get them depending on if they have games I want exclusive to them. More often than not I'm just sitting on the sofa at home playing DS, and it doesn't bother me if it's the console experience or not, because I get that too eventually. But then handheld gives me the added bonus of being able to play away from home/in bed before I go to sleep. Though usually I'll be constantly playing the system that has whatever game I'm hooked on at the moment. Though it seems it would be hard for you to rate a lot of systems since you haven't played them much. I feel like the game variation is the most important thing in determining what systems you like, so if you've only tried one or two, probably hard to tell in that sense. Then again the controller and typical gameplay styles are important too. Either way, as far as PS3 goes, it's cool, but it just doesn't have very many good games. PS2 just rolled them out; PS3 takes its sweet time.

Oh, well that's kinda a relief to hear Cracked had things wrong. I mean, yeah, dissapointing to get misinformation from Cracked, but it's a good thing for them to be wrong about. Either way, I'm not worrying too much. The only things on that list I even did were use public wifi and government forms. Government forms are kinda necessary, and so many people do it that chances of you being individually targeted are slim. As for public wifi, that's not something I do often; only when necessary, and it's usually at school where you need to be a student to access the internet to begin with.

By the way, Karma and I watched Mysterious Skin today. We actually liked it a lot, and the quality wasn't too bad. I wanna get it on DVD or something now. XD What was weird though was it was sooo, sooo similar to a side plot we have going in one of our RPs. The side plot is where these two older kids (in their early twenties during the RP) were raped/molested by this guy as children. One of the kids is this guy's stepson, so it happened to him constantly (like how it constantly happened to Neal that summer), and the other was, I kid you not, in a baseball team the guy coached, so it only happened to him once (like Bryan). The one who it kept happening to grew up to be a tough guy who gets into a lot of trouble, but is also gay and thinks he might be because of what his stepfather did. He's also really close to his mom, but almost in a friend way, like where they gossip and cuddle in stuff (also kinda like Neal). The other one is a wimpy kid who always gets bossed around, and is really traumatized from what happened, like Bryan. It was just... so weird, like even the baseball coach thing fit in. XD

No Epcot is the Disney World in Florida. All the other Disney parks are Lands I believe. I just had soda in France when I was in Paris a couple years ago. I haven't been back to Disney World since I was 18, almost 7 years ago. So to be fair I don't remember which countries they had, though I think a lot were Asian, I just recall none of them were as good.

Haha, for me it's just a lot harder to find merit in bad writing, bad characterization. I mean because I can't picture in the traditional sense, I need to picture in my sense. So I get a ton out of literature...when it's good and/or creative and/or rich. When it's bad though it's nothing. There is nothing to get out of it for me. It's just boring.

Yea, I mean I know it's a comedy site but I'm usually impressed by the level of research a lot of those articles have. That one both regurgitating things that have already been heavily done (in comedic forms) and over-hyping/misinforming certain points was disappointing. Short of picking up a virus, which generally is something you'd have to actively download, you aren't likely to have someone able to steal your identity through your computer. And it's completely impossible if your identity isn't even in your computer. I don't think my Social Security or Passport number are anywhere in my system. Now that I've finally started with online banking I'm a bit more worried, but I don't ever log into those things in a public spot, and the few times I'm on public wifi I don't download anything. Also I doubt a university wifi connection would count as public wifi to begin with. That's still a private connection even if on a larger scale.

I'm glad you guys liked the movie, I always worry about recommending something that's a bit off the conventionally beaten path in case it offends or is just boring. I really liked it too, and yea I definitely would like to get it on DVD I think. Just as the link was decent enough quality I figured it'd be worth watching, and recommending in that version, before asking someone to invest money in it. That's kind of funny about the side story thing being so similar, although they are motifs that are used enough, if not always in combination. Both kids tend to fit into models of molestation victims, and little league/sports coaches are quite often set as ***** in fiction. Law and Order: Special Victims Unit has had at least a half dozen instances of sports coaches as child molesters.

I head back to the States Wed, and have to pack, move all my stuff, clean out my place/turn keys in and just get a ton of stuff done Tuesday so might not be online for a few days after this. We shall see. I might not be able to sleep Tuesday night and be online all night. I always kind of hate traveling alone, and this will be the first time I'll have to get to London on my own. I've flown into London but never out of. xd
