Twilight, admittedly, has no literary value. That doesn't render it completely worthless--its primary value lies in wish-fulfillment (usu. for young teenage girls).

On a personal level, I think that is unbelievably lame. and sad. (I mean, it is a book. books should be literary. that is why it is literature.) but there you have it: Twilight's sole appeal.

I have to say, though, the idea of sparkly vampires makes me laugh. XD And Meyer's adjectives! "O, his marble embrace... those marble arms... that wonderful marble chest... his lovely marble eyelashes..." *snort* and then in the third book she decides to go for a little change of pace and morphed him from marble to STONE... his STONE embrace, his STONE arms, his STONE chest; what is he, a gargoyle? /laughs until her stomach hurts

Have you guys heard of Stephen King's recent commentary on Meyer? :3

Oh, and on yaoi... I think at some point in my life, I thought it was disgusting as well. I mean, Harry Potter? Draco Malfoy? wtf /puke

I don't remember what changed. I think it was that I started reading some of Maya's fanfiction. She is the most amazing writer I have ever read. Even if you don't read fanfiction, I recommend you check out her book, The Demon's Lexicon, which is coming out this summer. I assure you, it is completely legit and nothing like Cassandra Clare's shitty self-plagiarism (and Star Wars idea plagiarism, and Harry Potter, and Buffy) of already not-that-great self-fanfiction.

Well, if you put it in that way Fwoom, Twilight is pretty much an example of self fic or Author Sue isn't it? The main character(s) are either based on the author or are what the author imagines herself to be. I'm tempted to look up TV Tropes and see what it has to say about it; I'm sure there's going to tons of lolsworthy tidbits I could find.

I'm not sure about Harry Potter, but it's not surprising that girls who like yaoi also like characters such as Draco Malfoy: goth, emo, an upper class elite, he's even got a trope named after him, "Draco in Leather Pants". xd

I've heard of Cassandra Clare before. Wasn't she accused of plagiarism? I remember hearing that she copied whole passages out of Harry Potter and inserted them into her fan fiction. That was before she decided to publish her works in an attempt to make money. But she isn't the worst example of a fanfic writer who went professional in order to get rich; anyone here read My Immortal? It was probably the most atrocious fan story ever written. And the author of that fic released a thinly edited version of it as an actual novel. How crazy is that?

@ CBC: You mean Tom Felton? OMG he was so ugly from HP Prisoner of Azkaban onwards. Before that he was kinda short, and cute. Then he had a massive growth spurt, his hair turned from blond to white and his face just got too big for his hair, and horrible, and acne-covered >.<

I think that Bella is Meyer's ideal version of herself; so perfect that even the 100 year olf vampire who has never loved anyone falls in love with her. It's just made to fuel her 12-year old fantasies...

Last term I did a 7-page book review, in which I mostly ranted about how Twilight sucks and just how much it sucks and why it sucks. Interestingly enough my teacher (who is very old-fashioned and doesn't seem to talk about anything except Shakespeare) seemed to find it delightful. The margin was covered in red Biro with her comments on how she agreed with everything I said and stuff like "Oh yes, I think you're right" and "I wonder!" and "Yes, that does seem unrealistic, doesn't it?"
I don't think she was quite supposed to enjoy it as much as she did...

HAHA! The "marble/stone chest" thing is another of those descriptions that is used so much that you can recite it xD
Though I don't get how having a "marble embrace" can be good. Mostly I would use it to describe an uncomfortable embrace. But she's using it as a good point of him...? WTF?!

Uh, a lot of fangirls (and yaoi fangirls at that) probably don't know what goth actually means, so they might think someone like Malfoy is a goth, or an emo. And didn't Draco become ugly looking in the later books

lol twilight... couldn't bring myself to read past page 3. But apparently the best thing about it according to my friend (who is now a robert pat. fan because of twilight =.=) is that the vampires in the book sparkle though I have pointed out to her that vampires drink blood and are afraid of sunlight. anyway their sparkly-ness doesn't make up for the boring-ness of the series.
