Actually they don't see it as pointless now...except in more menial circumstances. They just edited the rules, not threw them away alltogether. What it does is take away the shame the family faced, they are now ready to be back in "civilized society". I mean is the US better where once you are shamed you might never go back? Families to under the suffering because of what ONE person did? I am not condoning seppuku, but I do have respect for those who do it. You HAVE to be brave to pull off something like that. They are bringing pain and taking away their own lives just to bring back happyness not for themselves...but for their family. It's a selfless act if you think about it in that respect. The problem is you cannot see past the ideals that American society has shoved into your brain, which makes you like a sheep stare

My ideals come from logic, and clearly no good comes from killing ones self stare And cool pictures Melodious, but is the first sword you hold also a light saber but switched off?

Tsuki No Tragedy Oni_Makibi Say all you want now, but back then it meant something to some people... It did mean something, but I said despite. I know what you said, or typed. No one ever said anyone was wrong and I didnt say that to just one person. I was talking to the group. I just like to contribute some times...

Actually if you knew much about Japanese society....it DOES make them happier and that's the point! I mean you're saying that these people are happy living in shame for something they didn't do? Oh yeah that makes logical sense!!
Anyways how can you say something in logic about something you don't even wish to consider from the other side?

BaloneyX Yeah, I mean if a family member of yours did something shameful you re telling me you d be happier if he killed himself? surprised Am I Japanese? Was I raised in a culture that put honor above happyness? Just because I don't necessairly agree with it, doesn't mean I find it stupid. As I said I can understand and respect it, but only because I UNDERSTAND it properly. Sure I wish that they could find a new way, but...eh.

Yes they DO benefit from it!! How can you understand it, when by it's very DEFINITION people benefit from it?! It brings back HONOR on the family instanteously, that is a BIG benefit in Japan. rolleyes

Yeah but kiling yourself is a silly way to get honor, there are other ways you know stare Superior: You are nothing, you have NO HONOR!!! Other guy: Oh no, I will prove my honor*kills himself* Superior: Wow he wasnt so bad after all, he had honor give him a proper burial
Now who got what from that surprised , and I threw in the proper buriel who knows if they d actually give the guy that much
And if its such a great way to gain your honor back why dont they still do it now stare , maybe because they saw how its wrong surprised

Are you stupid? It STILL happends today! That was mentioned previously!
Besides your example was a gross exageration that would NEVER happen!!
That's like saying a Boy Scout Council Member would be like "Hey you're gay? Well go ahead and take some little boys out camping and feel free to give them all a good raping"
