Yea. Started researching visa stuff today (still waiting to hear back on PhD, figure probably won't until break ends, term restarts the 9th for taught programmes) which made me feel a bit better, because I definitely don't need 3 years worth of tuition up front, just the first year. And I might not even need as much maintenance (cost of living, I don't spend anywhere near the amount per month they require you to have, but they want to make sure people aren't going to move there and then be homeless I suppose) because I possibly have "established presence" from having lived there for a year already. So as long as I get into the programme I'm feeling a bit better that I'll be able to pull this off.

Wales was absolutely gorgeous, and meeting Tom's family was nice. The distance thing is really hard right now, especially as he didn't have internet over Christmas and has been in Paris, but we've been getting through ok. Did a lot of walking in Wales, went to the Coast, and saw 13th century castle ruins. I also love his house, it's very country home, but pretty large. Plus they have 6 sheep which I find very amusing. There's probably not a lot in the way of "city life" and I understand how after growing up there Tom isn't exactly enthralled with the place, but I adored it. Also I've never seen so many stars in my life, man the night sky away from cities is gorgeous. Even Tahoe (which is a pretty commercial tourist area to be fair) can't compare, and a few years ago I was blown away by that.

The FB status wasn't that relevant, just basically was making the point that she seemed to be mounting an attack. I don't even know who the mutual friend was originally talking about myself, it was just one of those vague statuses people write at third parties without ever naming them. It is funny though because I thought about that Karma at first too, especially when Sara commented. Initially thought damn she's vicious and then realized she probably wasn't even thinking that (but I'm pretty sure she was taking a stab at me, it is her style). But I ran into her again a couple of days ago and she was even worse. I was hanging out with a friend who I originally knew through her (and is also no longer on speaking terms with Sara) and bumped into her at Starbucks. We just got our coffee and went and sat on the far side of the place. However she stomped over angrily, ignored us, and angrily threw her stuff in the trash bin near us before stomping away. Even though she'd been sitting right next to a bin, which she fully well knew as she used it earlier - I know this because she was there with a mutual friend (who is one of my best friends) who gave me her perspective later, which included the friend kind of going off on Sara. Which I don't blame her, that's kind of humiliating being with someone who'd act that way in public. I mean in theory because of mutual friends I really would like to be on civil terms with her, even if I don't think I can be friends with her. I am determined to rise above and just not let things get to me, to act like an adult even if I really don't want to when she clearly refuses to. However it'd be nice to be able to return home and visit the people I love without being glared at by a child. I never had to deal with this kind of behavior in high school so it's really aggravating to have to do so years later. I dunno, but I have a feeling if she doesn't learn to grow up and not fight her battles like a middle schooler we soon won't have mutual friends. Because I have a feeling that as we get into our thirties and start settling down with families (whatever that might end up being for individual people) and careers they aren't going to be willing to tolerate that kind of behavior. But whatever, for now just going to try and brush off the glares and convince myself that if she's going to be that person she's not worth it. Eventually I'm sure the mantra will inevitably become true.

That's good to hear. I'm glad things seem to be looking okay and that you're less stressed about it. The things we stress over always seem to end up working out somehow in the end.

OMG the sheep thing cracked me up because I've heard jokes about Wales being obsessed with sheep, and I kind of just brushed it off as a silly stereotype until I read that. It sounds really nice though. I definitely prefer suburbs over city or country, but it's nice to visit the different things on occasion. I think the most stars I've ever seen is camping in Arizona; we can get quite a lot, because there's rarely clouds, but the dust dampers them somewhat. I thought I would see a lot in Japan, but they have like a permanent sky fog going on, like a layer over the entire sky, so you can never see much. Even on the plane we could hardly see the land below. Anyway, are you and Tom both planning on living in England after school, or are you guys kind of in a figure it out later place?

Oh, I see. And I think I misunderstood earlier, but was it Sara that commented that life sucks on the karma status? But ugh, that sucks having to keep running into her like that. You must live in a pretty small area, because I only ever see people I know in public maybe like three times a year. But you're right to just take it in stride, don't let her get you into her games. I agree that eventually all of her friends are going to get sick of it.

By the way, though I'd mentioned that I finished reading the Twilight series (took me about two years to get through it all). So we can actually have legitimate discussions about it now. XD I still thought it was a steaming pile of horseshit though. All I'm gonna say is the forth book that most of the non-psycho fans hate? It was my favorite. I think it makes sense from my perspective though; as demented as it was, I had no attachment to the characters that were involved in the digustingness (except Jacob, but I knew about him and Renesmee before I started the series, so I mentally prepared myself not to get to attached to him), so I wasn't bothered by their spiraling into WTF. So taking that out of the equation, the reason I actually enjoyed it most (though enjoyed is still a bit of an exaggeration)? Because stuff actually happened. The plot was still all over the place and never fully established, but OMG stuff that didn't involve Bella and Edward staring into each other's eyes happened for a majority of the book! It was something I could latch onto; I'd rather be disgusted with what happened in it than bored out of my mind and still disgusted at Bella and Edward's twue wuv. Anyway, I'll stop the rant now, sorry about that. XD

Yea I think Wales has something like 1 person to every 11 sheep? Either that or it's 1:25 and New Zealand is the 1:11. But yea the English make tons of sheep jokes, when I posted pictures of Tom's sheep he was complaining he was never going to hear the end of it. His family only has the few and they are mostly pets (they only use the wool to make some clothing), but sheep are a big industry in Wales. So yea, they're totally all over the place there. I think I prefer living in suburbs as well, but I definitely have an idealized love for the country and I do like to visit cities on occasion. I think at the moment we're in a figure it out later place, we haven't been together that long, and as I'd have 3 more years of school (and if he does his MSc he'll have 2 more after this one, not sure if he wants or needs a doctorate yet) we can see then what we want to do if things work out for us. It'd probably depend a lot on where we could both get jobs.

Yea Sara left the life sucks and people are bitches comment on the status. Sara and I our neighbors, we live about 3 blocks apart, which is why it's hard not to run into her. Her house is less than a 5 minute walk away from mine. Which was really cool when we were friends, not so much now that we aren't. Given such it's why I've decided I have to take things in stride, it's the only way to keep things bearable. I'll hope for her sake she grows up rather than pushes all her friends away, but only time will tell.

Haha, the third book is my favorite, but I actually don't hate the fourth book. The reason the third book is my favorite is because you get a lot of background on characters that I like (such as Jasper) versus yes Bella and Edward's "wuv" which is disgusting. And Bella definitely needs to get pushed off a cliff. I definitely realize the idealized elements of that, but I still can't stand her. The books are definitely written with the focus of "teenage" love in mind, it is the one thing that annoys me for people who actually believe it's the perfect love story. Because that perception doesn't last, and it shouldn't. Adult relationships ARE so much better than that. But Edward and Bella are frozen in time, and they'll never really be adults. Though they do have a baby, and that is creepy. XD But yea, the books are awful, but they are awful in this kind of cheesy enjoyable way. I read the fourth book when it came out, but Jacob imprinting on Bella's kid was just SO the predictable outcome for me that I wasn't really disgusted by it, because it didn't surprise me. From the moment she got pregnant, in spite all her insistence about her "son," I knew yup it's a girl, oh and Jacob is SO imprinting. Heh.

Although if you're ever bored, now that you've read them you should check out the Cleolinda recaps: http://cleoland.pbworks.com/w/page/10373763/Twilight#Bookdiscussionentries (they are about half way down, or just select section iii in the glossary). They are pretty funny. Also the Twinkie analogy she makes at the very beginning of the Twilight recap I think perfectly captures how I feel about the series. razz

Haha, yeah, I think New Zealand is the one that has the most sheep, but they're both pretty extreme. You read the webcomic Scandinavia and the World? It's similar to Hetalia, where all the countries are personified (but more 'western' humor because it's done by someone from Denmark, and less animu happy yaoi love love), but the one country that isn't a person is New Zealand, who is instead a sheep. XD And she and Wales are a couple, which is weird because Wales is still human, but he just loved that she was a sheep so much. And that sounds like a good plan, waiting until things progress further. Would you consider living in England though if things worked out that way?

Ah, got it. Still though, I have someone who lives in my neighborhood who I would like to avoid, and I haven't seen her in like three years because I just don't go near her house; it's just too big here to easily run into people at shops and such (not to mention the only places *in* walking distance from my house are Shooter's World and a trampoline park... oh Arizona), so I'm guessing you have more little shops you can walk to and that you see people in your neighborhood at.

I did enjoy the background stories in the third book (especially Jasper and Rosalie), but once again, it was just too little material compared to how much romance was in it. The third book is my second-favorite though, because it has a more reasonable ratio of plot/battle/back stories/actual content than the first two, but the forth book is pretty much like, at least 85% content, regardless of how demented that content is (or drawn-out, like with the giant discussion 'battle' at the end). It's still not Bella talking about Edward. Plus the part narrated by Jacob I thought was faaaar more interesting of a perspective than how Bella narrates, even if it was still about her. The third book is more like... what, 40% content? I just think it's sad I'm judging my favorites of these books by how much content they have, even though most books end up being 100%.
And yes, I agree with you completely on how 'temporary' their type of love is. It just reminds me of every other teenager misinterpreting their hormones and thinking they've found true love because they've never felt like this before. I only really found the forth book enjoyable (besides random moments here and there in the other three), but it was still in that cheesy horrible way. I read it within a week though instead of months and months, so it wasn't like so bad I kept putting it off like the others. XD
The imprinting thing with Jacob, regardless of if I knew it would happen, really pissed me off though. It was just so completely against his character (the entire time he spouted about free will and how it bothered him that his comrades basically became slaves), and then he accepted it like it was nothing once it happened. Not to mention it was such an easy way out of the mess Meyer had created with her Edward/BellaJacob triangle. Too simple, no growth from the characters, just an, "Oh, this is why I loved you the whole time! Whoops, guess we can all be happy and have no hard feelings now!" And of course there's the biggest objection everyone else has, the ***** implications and how friggin disturbing it would be to go from seeing something as a hell spawn and wanting to kill it to suddenly having your life revolve around it. Just overall, not cool.

And cool, I love funny recaps. I'll look into that. Cracked also has a pretty good recap of the series. Let me look real quick. Ah, here it is: http://www.cracked.com/funny-36-twilight/

New Zealand probably has more sheep, but as far as sheep to person ration I'm not sure. New Zealand has a larger population than Wales. I think it is 1:11 Wales though and 1:25 New Zealand. New Zealand is also exceptionally bigger area wise so it has more space to put sheep. Haha, and I have to tell Tom about the comic, I can just see him glare now. I will definitely check it out, it sounds fun. If things work out that way yea, I can see myself staying in England. Especially if things don't get better in the States within the university setting. I just don't know that I want to work in that kind of instability. I know the whole world is like that now, but the USA doesn't seem to have the same priority to fixing education as other countries do. In theory though I think I'd probably want to return to the States if I could, but I don't know how I'll feel in three years.

Yea there are several more places in walking distance (no trampoline park though, heh, that sounds like great fun). I ran into her in a Dollar Tree and Starbucks (the Dollar Tree is in a shopping centre that's about a 5 minute walk away, Starbucks is about a 15 minute walk away). I used to love having so many convenient haunts (Starbucks, a cafe, the pool, etc) in walking distance, but it's a bit of a burden now just because it ups the chances of a run in. I'm going to the cafe tomorrow, however I'm not worried about that. She's shown up there in the past, to antagonize the waitress who works there who is my friend and no longer hers. So I definitely think I'm not going to be uncomfortable there no matter what she did, though I am not expecting to see her. She has at least finally learned how to hold onto a job besides Treeview (which hasn't even fired people for leaving in the middle of shifts, so you couldn't get fired if you wanted to really) so she has to go to work at times now. I've generally only ever run into her places in the evening.

Yea I felt a bit of the 4th book content was too drawn out, so even though it became less Bella/Ed, it became very Bella/super perfect baby, which I found almost as nauseating. The first book is by far the worst, though I did like a lot of the second once Edward went away and Bella was at least trying to be a normal person. I did really like Jacob's section of the 4th book though, Midnight Sun - the incomplete draft of Twilight in Edward's perspective - I think was another strong point of the series. I think Bella is a lot less irritating when you aren't in her head. The "*****" thing didn't bother me though, just because it really wasn't presented like that. I mean there was clear expletive bounds about how at this point it's not a sexual attraction, it's just a connection. I mean the relationship between them as displayed was so babysitter/big brother and kid. Yes there's the implication the nature of that would change one day, but it would change with her aging. So I just took it as what it was, and it was just not *****. And free will is clearly a concept Meyers tried to eradicate from existence in the Twilight universe, so that didn't bother me either. xd

Yea recaps are fun, and they get better as the series progresses. I mean Cleo loves the books, but she's fully aware of all the implications and the mania around them, so it's hilarious. I have seen the Cracked articles on Twilight before though and they are hilarious. There are movie recap articles as well via Cracked that are amusing. Also by Movie Bob, which I just find hilarious. Because he is just highly sarcastic and you can just feel him bashing his head against walls. razz

EDIT

Also, in the Cracked article you linked...at the end it links to an interview with Pattison bashing the series...and that article links to Cleolinda, the person I linked you too. Small twi-verse. xd

Yeah, the comic's actually really funny. Art is no where near as good as Hetalia, but it's funnier in my opinion. Doesn't waste half its content on just being cute. And it has female versions of all the countries too.
Definitely agree about the state of universities in the US. Not very stable career-wise.

I am actually excited about the trampoline park; it just got put in so I wanna try it sometime with friends. But yeah, the closest places besides that are like a half hour walk, which would be okay if it weren't for the heat. It seems interesting being in a tighter community like that though. And we have Dollar Trees here too. XD

I hated the super perfect baby. It was hellspawn, and no one can say anything about it to change my mind. And I'm mixed on the first and second book. The first one was the worst with the overdone romance and had so little content, but the second had so. Much. Bella angst. I liked her okay when she was with Jacob and starting to improve, but she always went back to moping. It was just disgusting. But I really did like Jacob in it, he was like what made the second book bearable for me. So I really don't know. I'll just say I hate them both equally.
And the thing about Bella being less irritating when you're not in her head? Maybe if she couldn't block Edward's mind-reading, he wouldn't have ended up with her. XD He always talks about wanting to know how she thinks, but if he did... there'd go that relationship, lawl.
The '*****' part actually bothered me least of all the problems inherent to the Jacob/Renesmee thing, mostly for the same reasons as you. It was the slavery, the change in Jacob's character, and the easy plot fix that pissed me off most of all.

Yeah, I've seen Cracked's recaps of the movies, but I've kept waiting to read them until I actually see the movies. XD And nice with the small world thing.

Told Tom about the comic today, unfortunately Skype wasn't working so I couldn't see his face but he was not enthused by this Wales/New Zealand pairing. razz I read a few of the strips, I laughed thinking how you said it's less "yaoi boy love" like and the second strip in is Denmark telling Sweden and Norway they are a couple. 4laugh I haven't read Hetalia yet so can't compare, but this is cute enough.

I think Dollar Trees are a universal concept. Even England has Pound Land and 99 pence stores. And yea let me know how that trampoline park is when you get to it, sounds like a cool attraction. I've only been on a trampoline once that I recall.

Oh I definitely enjoy reading Midnight Sun where you get to see that's 100% why he's fascinated with Bella. If she wasn't a shield he would think (know) that she's just as vapid and irritating as the rest of the teenage girls he scorns. I felt the books were kinda meant to be overly neatly tied up. It doesn't make for good literature, but it does fit the cheesy fluff type crap that they are. But yea, the baby is creepy hellspawn and I would not be endeared by that thing.
PostPosted: Sat Jan 07, 2012 9:35 pm

Oh, haha, well I meant less yaoi as in like... less sparkly desu cute anime boys together because it's hot. Scandinavia and the World is more like it makes a lot of gay jokes, mostly depending on the relationships the countries have with each other. But it's more humor than sparkly desu. XD And if you find yourself liking SatW, Humon has another big comic she does called Niels that I think you would like a lot. It's about the head of a mafia-like gang, but he's extremely happy and adorable, and he's in a crazy three-way relationship with a married couple. It's really interesting, because it's so dark and psychological (honestly the best way I can describe the main character Niels is that he is essentially that happy guy singing "I Can't Decide Whether You Should Live or Die"), yet every strip is humorous, and there are a lot of adorable and romantic bits too. And you can never figure out if you're rooting for the good or the bad guys.

Ah, well like the concept, but I always thought the 'dollar store' was more of a universal concept, while Dollar Tree is like a specific dollar store business that may or may not exist in certain places. And Japan has 100 yen stores. XD They call them "Hyaku En Shoppu." And I will let you know, though that's kinda crazy you've only been on a trampoline once. It seemed like one in every ten kids had them in Arizona, so even though I never owned one, I always had friends I could go to to play on one.

...that is seriously the entire reason he's fascinated with Bella? That's... actually quite sad. And yeah, but I feel like it just went too far with the Jacob thing. It just wasn't something that should've been possible to tie up perfectly, and she showed how flawed it was to do so by her awful solution.

Haha, yea I totally know what you meant, it still made me chuckle though. Anyhow haven't gotten very far, my laptop being sort of broken cuts greatly into things like webcomics, just because it's irritating to scrunch my browser to 60% of the size to not have to deal with the broken bottom 40% of the screen. Right now it's being nice but I really should clean my room, of course when I start to go do something productive my computer magically wants to behave and get me to come back. xd But yea might check out Niels, actually sounds more my thing than SatW too. My two favorite webcomics are Nowhere University (which is an awesome compilation of original inventiveness and literary/classical/etc type references, but takes long hiatuses, currently on a massive one atm) and Questionable Content (which is a fun and sort of relatable following of a group of hipsters, with some reality differences (such as antro-PCs - or personal robots) and updates very regularly). The art is pretty good quality in both as well, which I also enjoy. Tom reads a lot of webcomics, more than I could bother catching up on. Though things like Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal (similar humor to Cyanide and Happiness) makes for good stand alone comedy. Anyhow I'll shut up now. ~_~

Well yea, but Dollar Tree doesn't have any products specifically to itself, in inventory or style, so it's just a type of dollar store. Like Pound Land is a specific chain in the UK, but it's just a dollar store type. Though I think Dollar Tree is a company that used to go by Dollar Store, either that or Dollar Store was a separate company that faded into obscurity. So with only the one around (at least here) anymore it just seems more type to me than specific company. Dollarstore.com seems to still exist, but not locations. Can't be bothered to investigate if they are actually one in the same.

Well he has great reasons such as her being so "smart" and "caring" and "so mature," however get inside her head for a minute and you'll learn she's not atypically smart or anything else, she's not even that smart, and she's totally nuts and selfish and whinny. Or, conversely, other girls aren't that bad. It's just he only gave Bella a shot because he couldn't hear her. Which to be fair, being inside my own girl brain is sometimes stressful, I can't blame Edward for falling for the first girl that he can get to be quiet. xd The entire series is utterly flawed though, tying it up was the perfect thing to do with a total pile of things that shouldn't be reality anyhow. I mean, in a way the ending kind of helps to invalidate the entire series. It's complete improbability just sheds further light on how awfully trite and unrealistic the series is. Haha, totally. Lol. Although, I guess it also validates the love an abusive controlling guy and you will be rewarded with happiness and awesome (if by awesome you mean painful and bruising) sex moral as well, so that's probably not good.
PostPosted: Fri Jan 13, 2012 9:01 pm

That sucks, the laptop thing. And yeah, I actually like Niels more than Scandinavia and the World, and it is definitely more my type of comic, but I was pleasantly surprised with how much I liked the latter as well; it's way more fluffy than Niels, but it's really funny, and I actually grew attached to the characters, even though they're mostly just stereotypes made into people. XD And man, I read way too many webcomics, so much that I had to separate them into a separate folder of 'ones I wasn't obsessed enough with to not check for updates every day' so I wasn't taking like an hour a day to just check for all the updates. The ones I still do check every day are VGCats, Awkward Zombie (both generic video game comics that don't follow a story), Order of the Stick (a comedy Dungeons and Dragons comic with a surprisingly in-depth plot and character development), Teahouse (pretty much my guilty pleasure of shiny yaoi desu prettiness with beautiful art, though the plot and characters aren't bad either, being a bout a high-class brothel where the whores are more like a family), Sin Pararse/This is the Worst Idea You Ever Had (two comics on the same site, one about how two guys met through being mercenaries, one about vampires going after this group of friends), and The Demon Road (an alternate reality Zelda fan comic). But yeah, they all update regularly, which is why, along with them being really awesome, is why they haven't been shunned to the 'only check occasionally' folder. Oh, and Niels and SatW are also checked daily, but I watch them through DA, so since I check that daily, that was pretty much a given.

Oh, see we still have a lot of different chains of dollar stores here, so it seems strange to me to say one chain in particular is the 'universal one.' XD

Haha, yeah thinking about it, it makes total sense that he would be into the one girl who he can't hear fawning over him. And that also explains why Edward had never had attraction to anyone else before! Twilight is not a story of twu wuv, but a story of a mind-reader settling for the one mind he can't hear all the horrible thoughts from. XD Ugh, stupid Twilight and its ridiculous anti-morals.

Man, I want to say that I can't imagine having so many comics to follow, but I probably follow as many memes and such, which is probably worse. Whenever I start my PhD I'll have to significantly cut back on the memes. And quit Farmville. xd

Hahaha, the anti-morals are too funny. I do have two dvds of the films, I think at least one was a gift. Currently they are in my boyfriend's room because I left my DVDs with him in England. He glares at having such filth. I jokingly told him he could destroy them if he bought me their equivalent worth in drinks (as I was thinking of selling them if I can be bothered, I really don't enjoy the movies very much, they're even worse). He's quite tempted. razz

I guess if you check them all daily it wouldn't be, but if you ever fell behind. xd That's why I'm trying to cut back on meme and lol type sites. If I check everyday it's pretty quick, but when I fall behind it's a good chunk of life catching up (and I'm a bit too obsessive to just not catch up usually). So I've just cut out a lot of sites and I'll probably cut them all out (not my webcomics, well, pretty much comic at this moment) whenever I get to start my doctorate. I've also cut down on Cracked a lot. I'll tend to only browse it from time to time and don't read most things unless they really sound like something I'd be interested in topic wise.

How was the convention you went to?

Yeah, it takes a while when I do occasionally check the folder I don't go to daily. And I had to do the exact same thing you did with memes, cut out the ones I wasn't willing to check daily, because I also can't just not catch up. As for Cracked, I tried to do what you do; I still check it daily, but told myself I would only read the really interesting-sounding articles... and so now I still mostly read all of them each day, because most sound really interesting. XP Sometimes I skip ones about war and stuff, and I almost always skip the ones that are like wacky fiction about the writers though. But still not as much as I wanted to cut back on.

And the convention was fun. Not too many panel events, but we cosplayed and bought lots of stuff.

Yea sometimes I get to it everyday and when I do I usually read all of them, when I do fall behind though I tend to get pretty picky about what I'll read though. Generally the only author I always click is Seanbaby, I don't always like him, but I like his book reviews so much that I just always give everything of his a chance even if I sometimes decide nah and don't finish. I'll usually read most movie type things, but if the article seems to heavily based on movies I haven't seen and don't already know about I'll probably skip them. Other than that it really just depends on how tuned to my interest or perspective the article seems to be. Like things mocking bad drivers, definitely something I want to read. A lot of the science/nature type stuff, with few exceptions, I'm not fully interested in. I generally lean toward funny, as usually a laugh is what I'm looking for when killing time, and try to go with those articles. So if it seems more interesting than funny I tend to pass.

The last con I went to didn't have tons of panel events, and certain ones were hard to get into (just they weren't big enough for as many people who were interested to go). But the grounds were really nice, and the gardens were good for photos and poses and such. What did you cosplay as?
