Seppuku is normally for extreme circumstances. If their son was to run away it'd depend. Did he run away and end up getting his ENTIRE Platoon killed? Something like that might be worth Seppuku. As I said in cases of SEVERE and EXTREME shame Seppuku is done. A lot of this isn't even forced upon them, but rather it is a choice they are offered. They would rather kill themselves then to live life as a Ronin, to be without a family name and live in such dishonor and hardship. Japan is a VERY different society, and looks heavily down upon ronins. It's all too easy to become homeless at that point or to suffer great poverty.
Seppuku is not to be taken lightly, it's not just "Oops I ********, I need to go kill myself". It would be something that would be of a crisis. Like a man who neglected his duties to his wife in order to ******** the brains out of his daughter perhaps... sweatdrop He might then commit seppuku in order to let his daughter and wife live without shame, to take the ENTIRE blame upon himself.
Also as I said before, understanding and respect is different from approval. Do I think seppuku should be done? No. I'm not saying this at all....merely that I don't think it to be the grevious sin others believe it to be.

BaloneyX Where did the gay boy scouts come from xd That's an awfully good question. XD It wasn't even parallel analogy to the argument. Haha. Seppuku, I believe, was practiced originally by the Samurai through the Bushido code. With the fall of the Tokugawa Era and the rise of the Meiji Restoration, the Samurai and their practices largely became defunct. The modernized thinking saw many practices as, indeed, old-fashioned and unncessary. It does not mean that these practices were stopped all together. Families and idividuals practiced them, including seppuku. From Wikipedia: While the voluntary seppuku [...] has been widely admired and idealized, in practice the most common form of seppuku was obligatory seppuku, used as a form of capital punishment for disgraced samurai. If the sentenced was uncooperative, it was not unheard of for them to be restrained, or for the actual execution to be carried out by decapitation while retaining only the trappings of seppuku; even the short sword laid out in front of the victim could be replaced with a fan. Unlike voluntary seppuku, seppuku carried out as capital punishment did not necessarily absolve the victim's family of the crime. Depending on the severity of the crime, half or all of the deceased's property could be confiscated, and the family stripped of rank.

You agree with Tsuki-chan, but not with me? She said a lot of the same stuff!!
Also I used the Gay Boy Scout analogy to let Baloney see just how ludicrious and inappropriate his example of how seppuku is stupid really was.... rolleyes

The gay scout thing was just weird, nothing else, well it made me laugh too XD
And no, I did agree that there were some old fashioned people who still do it. BUT the majority stopped it.
And can you read the Wikipedia again...

OK! Well ... I see two have somethins to ... talk about. Well I think killing yourself is stupid. (All gay boyscouts aside) Save your life to fight another day. If there isn't anything you can do ... get the hell outta dodge and have Bush send a little present later. sweatdrop I don't really have an opinion because I don't really know much about war, war tatics, and the honor code.

Well killing yourself is not JUST about war crimes. In this case it's used to restore fallen honor. Like the example I gave was a daddy raping his kids and beating his wife. It might come to public attention, and in his shame he might commit seppuku so that his family wouldn't have shame fallen upon them. Instead it would be a more proud moment because all of that honor has now been restored.
As I said it's not about agreeing with the act itself or disagreeing, but about understand and respect. It takes GUTS to kill yourself like that. It isn't some stupid quick death like shooting yourself in the head. It's EXTREMELY painful, and thus extreme dishonor is lifted from the family...

Well if you put it THAT way then yeah its the right thing to do.... granted you find it right within yourself to do so. Don't kill yourself if someone tells you you should. Do it because YOU think its the proper ... punishement to fit the crime.
