noiamnotchris Just to go off of the quote, hardly anybody wears black in the show... I wasn't saying that, I was referencing ninja popularity. In other words, talking about ninja's [or at least the way they're seen by today's adoring fans] in general.

Noxness Secret Duckie Noxness Secret Duckie Lauz Secret Duckie Does everyone here love Naruto?
I don't love it. But that's only because I've never watched it before. Dare I say...
I think I might be the only person on Gaia that thinks it's ridiculous.
For the fact that it's bad writing, but the biggest reason is the blatant disregard for REAL Japanese culture.
When ninjas were actually around they were hated!! They were bad guys! They were completely shunned in society! The Japanese [at least when they were still Japanese, rather than a bunch of wanna-be Americans [[and I'm generalizing here, on Tokyo, mostly]]] were all about honor and pride, and there was nothing more dishonorable and shameful than to attack your enemy when their back was turned. And that's what the ninja's did. They were assassins. They did the evil deeds behind closed doors of Japanese society for money. There was no honor in being a ninja, but shame and isolation. They were so 'sneaky' because they had to be sneaky. They were no longer people, but disgusting, dishonorable filth.
So making it this big freakin' thing that they're so cool is rediculous. The person who assassinated Abe Lincoln wasn't cool. And ninjas are even more shameful than he was. At least he actually showed himself before he killed him.
I don't like Naruto either.. but my argument is mainly that I don't enjoy watching that type of Anime. The argument that it is nothing like "real japanese culture" is slightly ridiculous imo. Especially considering the fact that ITS A CARTOON. I am pretty sure that not many people pick up Marvel comics and expect exact replicas of what "American culture" really is. Its an exaggerated media just like anime is. I can see your argument.. but for crying out loud my friend the entirety of Naruto is fantasy.. not reality. When you are dealing with mediums that coincide..perhaps your argument will stand some ground.. until then.. its like saying "zomg Powerpuff Girls is TOTALLY NOT WHAT AMERICA IS LIEK!!one1!" Of course not, but Naruto follows this huge wave of sudden obsession with ninjas.
'OMGLOL! THEYR LEIK SO FASST. AND THEI WERE BLAK LEIK I DO.'
Naruto isn't fantasy enough to be considered something on it's own. It's not considered fantasy at all. They're almost trying to pedal it as some sort of realistic thing. Comics and the Powerpuff Girls are fantasy, and widely marketed as so. Marvel and the PP Girls are superhero comics, and this is supposed to be about supposedly everyday people.
Well.. last time I checked.. supernatural power.. was uhm.. fantasy/sci fi. I don't care if it's drawing on myths or legends.. it's still not "real". Which is my point. The ninja thing? Not just a Naruto thing.. its huge EVERYWHERE.. it's even big in WoW, and it was where I first encountered it. I see what you are saying about the show propagating a "bad" thing.. but I mean.. there were ninjas in the karate kid.. ppl will always think the bad guys are cool.. I mean..common.. what were the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles??? NINJAS MY FRIEND! You make such a good point. It's not all about being evil, like you pointed out when bringing up the TMNT. In the show, it's hardly about assassinations or anything, unless the mission calls for it. A lot of the missions they're called to do are simple missions to help around the village.
