Brandon mindlessly followed after his mistress, following her into the house. He paused for a few moments, breathing in the delicious smell of food, before continuing after Violetta. His stomach didn't growl but it did ache, silently reminding him of its presence. Back at the slave shop, he'd quickly learned how to silence his stomach. A growling stomach was bad for business and so was even worse for the slave whose stomach it had been. He cringed at the memory before pushing it away.
When Violetta spoke, he stopped, staring after her. He had been a slave long enough to know that 'You're free to do as you wish' usually meant 'I wish to be left alone'. And so, he watched her ascend the stairs before disappearing from his sight. He looked around helplessly, not entirely sure what to do.
At the sound of someone knocking at the door, he turned to face the entrance to the mansion but hadn't even taken one step when another slave reached the door and opened it. He didn't catch what the slave said but he guessed it was a greeting as the slave stepped aside to let the person enter.
Brandon's stomach dropped as he recognized the man from before, the man that had tried to harm his mistress. Eyes widening, he turned and bolted up the stairs after his mistress. He had to warn her.

The slave opened the door to see a man that she recognized as Violetta's ex-fiance. She kept her expression pleasant though it was forced. "Good evening Master James," she said. "The Master is awaiting you in the dinning room." She stepped back to allow him entrance.
At the sound of quick footsteps, she turned and saw the new slave running up the stairs. "Hey!" she snapped after him. "No running inside!" The new slave just ignored her. She sighed and shook her head.

Tell me, what is a human worth without a heart?

Violetta entered her room after a moment, about to close the door until she heard the sound of footsteps quickly following her. It was probably Brandon but why was he running? Leaning against the door, she waited for him to come up, her eyes closing after a moment as she crossed her arms on her chest..

For mine seems to have been destroyed.

He smiled at the slave that he recognized from when he had been welcome to this home. Even if she didn't want him around, or thought badly of him, she kept that plastic smile on her face. Taking off his coat, he let the butler take care of it, letting him catch it. "Thank you." he told the slave girl before walking across the room, heading into the dining room.

Seeing the familiar face of Violetta's father, he greeted him. "Good evening." he said bowing slightly as a sign of respect before moving to join him on the left side of the table. Of course, he wasn't quite sure how he would treat him after he found out his plan to get Violetta back but he could only wait and see. For now he let him take on the conversation, asking whatever questions he wanted answered.

((So short.. I'm sorry))

Brandon spun around the corner, only stopping because he slid and hit the wall. Shaking his head, he hurried over to his mistress who seemed to have been waiting for him. He came to a stop directly in front of her trying, motioning furiously with his hands. He made the shape of a barn, then pointed at her, made some motions of what that man had done earlier then motioned to the floor. The whole time, his expression was one of panic.

Violetta's father didn't even look up at the sound of footsteps entering the room. He didn't need to. He knew who it was. However, when he did look up and spotted James, he snorted. "Just sit down," he said, not in the mood for playing a game of cat and mouse. Once James had, he said, "I've got to admit, you sure do have balls, requesting a meeting with me."

Tell me, what is a human worth without a heart?

Violetta opened her eyes when she heard the footsteps stop in front of her and she would have taken a step back when she saw his face but there was a door behind her. It was obvious that he was panicking. Biting her lip she tried to figure out what he was saying.. or rather motioning but it was all so quick. Grabbing his hands gently after a moment. "Slow down.." she said softly, before slowly letting go of him.

Pretty much all she understood was that he had pointed at her and then at the floor. Was she supposed to go downstairs? Why though? Her eyes widened. The only reason Brandon would panic like this was if something was going to happen to him.. right? Then again he had stood up for her when James had been there. James was here? She walked into her room then before sitting on her bed, dumbfounded. He was here to talk to her father.. wasn't he? She swallowed, her eyes burning holes in the ground. What was she supposed to do?

For mine seems to have been destroyed.

He almost smirked but that wouldn't make things any better so he sat down. "I want to fix the damage that I've caused. I know that Violetta.. has distanced herself from everyone and I know that I can make things better." he told him. "I won't do my best to fix things unless you allow me to do so." James added, getting to the point.

Brandon stopped motioning when she grabbed his hands. He still felt like running, or fighting, or overall panicking. He was sure that was his 'fight-or-flight' response kicking in. When he'd been younger, he'd heard other slaves talk about it. It was the reason that a lot of slaves, when they got punished, fought back. Of course, that only led to them getting punished even more.
He shuddered at the memory before following his mistress into her room, watching her expectantly. What did she want him to do? He'd get rid of the man, if she wanted him to. He'd gladly do it, especially after what he'd done, or tried to do, to Violetta.

Violetta's father snorted, not believing a word James said. "And how, exactly, do you plan to do that?" he asked, taking a sip from his wine glass. "Keep in mind that if you hurt her even more, I will have you killed, regardless of the promise I made to your parents." After James had had his affair and broken Violetta's heart, James's parents had come to him, begging him not to kill their son. It was only because of that that James was still alive.

Tell me, what is a human worth without a heart?

She swallowed and looked up at Brandon. Locking herself up wouldn't help now.. would it? What about running? Of course she had never tried it before and she didn't even know if Brandon would stay with her once they got out of the mansion. He seemed to care for her welfare but was that only because of his role?

"I.." she paused as she looked up at him. Would he be willing to live a life on the run? He probably wanted to go back to see his family. "I'm leaving.. would you come with me?" she asked as she slowly stood, still looking up at him since he was taller than her. Her eyes searched his for a moment, she would understand if he decided against it but it would be easier if she had someone with her.

Looking away from him, she glanced towards the closet she had. In the very far corner she always had a bag packed with things just in case the time came when she wanted to leave. She didn't know if James would convince her father.. but even if he didn't he would come back again and again until he had his way. Violetta should have realized that a long time ago.

For mine seems to have been destroyed.

"I plan to make it up to her." he told him as he glanced over at the food that was on the table. He had to admit that the cook was excellent but he wasn't here to eat, at least not today. "I realize that I caused her pain, broke her heart but who else would be willing to fix it that could possibly deal with her..." he paused, wanting to pick the right word. "Temper." James said after a moment.

"I willing to put up with that and more until she is back to being the way she was before. Happy with a constant smile on her face." he definitely realized he had made the mistake of having an affair with someone, especially Violetta's new found friend but it wasn't like he had forced himself on her, she had been the one to come to him.

The moment Violetta said she was leaving, he felt sick to his stomach. Then, when she asked if he would come with her, fear flashed across Brandon's face. He no longer saw Violetta or her room. He saw fields spread out before him, miles and miles of dirt road ahead of him and behind him. He was running. The stones stung his bare feet, cutting them in some places and bruising them in others. Then, a large, rough hand grabbed him by the hair at the back of his head. The road was gone. He was behind a large barn. The smell of animals hung heavily in the air. The skin along his back broke out in goosebumps as the chilly air brushed against it where it had previously been covered. Then, hot, white pain searing through his back again, and again, and again. Then, a quite, furious voice that was just barely contained whispered in his ear, "If you ever try to run away again, I'll kill you."
Brandon blinked and he was back in Violetta's room. Only a heartbeat had passed and yet it had seemed like hours. He didn't realize his hands were trembling as he, shakily, shook his head, taking several steps back until he hit a wall, his whole body shaking.

Violetta's father listened vaguely to James's bull while he took a bite of his supper. He chewed, considering the boy's words before swallowing. "I've heard that the new slave I've acquired for her is willing," he said nonchalantly. "I've not even had him for a day and I've already heard that he follows her around like a lost puppy. I get a good feeling about that boy."

Tell me, what is a human worth without a heart?

When she saw that he had started to shake, her lips parted. He had probably tried to escape.. run before and it obviously hadn't ended well. She swallowed before slowly taking a few steps towards him. "Shh.." she said softly but he only continued to step back until he wasn't against a wall. "I won't take you with me." she told him. What would happen if she left him though? Would her father send him back to the slave shop? Why did she even care? She lowered her head. "I'm sorry you got dragged into this." Violetta whispered.

An apology wasn't enough, his life had been taken away from him after all and she had no idea how much pain he had suffered afterward. "I'll make sure you're treated well." she told him before grabbing a feather, some ink and a pen.

Dear Father,

I know you would be against me leaving but it seems like the only choice I have left. Brandon has nothing to do with it, he was a good companion but I don't think I could ever stand to see James under the roof of the home I grew up in...

She paused.. was she being irrational about all of this? She didn't know and she had already made up her mind.

Please forgive me, after

Violetta stopped and crumbled up the paper and let it fall off the desk. Running her fingers through her hair, she bit her lip. Would it be better to just leave instructions to the head of the servants or would she just go running to her father and tell him what was going on? Narrowing her eyes for a moment, she grabbed her bag from her closet, leaving the feather, ink, and parchment on the wooden desk as she looked over at Brandon one more time.

"Good bye.." she gave him a sad smile before walking out.

For mine seems to have been destroyed.

He was proving to be difficult and he had expected the slave to be a mere pet but no.. he was there in place of him. His muscles flexed but he kept his cool. That slave needed to be disposed of or bought... then again he did seem to be rather loyal to his mistress. James couldn't imagine why though.. hadn't it been only one day? "Do you honestly think a slave will be able to set her back on her feet?" he asked, crossing his arms in the process.

Brandon could see her mouth moving, knew that she was saying something but nothing reached his ears. Instead, all he heard was his ex-master's voice over and over again. 'If you ever try to run away again, I'll kill you.' His life was s**t anyway. Half the time he couldn't sleep for the nightmares. He was loyal to his mistress though he hardly knew her. Those were all good reasons to go with her, even if it did end in him being beaten to death. But, the truth was, he did want to live. If you were alive, there was hope for something better. If not, well, it wouldn't matter.
Leaning forward, his hands cupping his elbows, his legs trembled, forcing him to crouch down. He found it hard to breathe as he struggled to free himself from the panic he'd somehow become encased in. He lowered his head, his chin resting on his chest. He didn't know how long he had crouched there but when he finally freed himself from the panic, his legs were aching and Violetta was gone. He blinked, slowly standing up and releasing his elbows.
Looking around in a daze of confusion, he spotted a crumbled piece of paper on her desk. Walking over, he lifted the paper, smoothed it out and read it. His eyes widened. She was gone!

Violetta's father noticed the sudden tension in James's body and wasn't overly surprised. Of course James would feel threatened by the fact that a slave had taken his place on Violetta's companion, but he only had himself to blame for it.
He scoffed at James's words, aware of the irony. "Do you honestly think you could?" he countered. "Besides, I've seen odder things happen. As I've said, I've a good feeling about that boy."

Tell me, what is a human worth without a heart?

Violetta headed to the head of the maids, deciding that she would be able to tell her father everything once she had left. The woman was about to ask her if she needed anything but Violetta shook her head before gesturing towards the chairs. After the two sat down, Violetta finally parted her lips to speak what was on her mind.

"I want you to tell my father.. to give Brandon a job here and a place to live until he decides to leave." she raised a hand as the maid tried to speak again. "Tell him.. that Brandon has been a good companion." pausing for a moment, she lowered her head. "I love my father.. make sure he knows that.." she whispered before continuing. "I'm leaving. Don't tell him until after a quarter of an hour after I have left." she told her as the maid looked at her in shock.

Violetta slowly stood before nodding her head as a small good bye before heading towards the back door, deciding to go the barn and take her horse for a run. If she went on foot they would be able to catch up to her easily. Holding her bag in one hand, she slowly let her hair down, letting the little black hat fall in the process into a sun lit patch of grass.

For mine seems to have been destroyed.

Well Violetta's father definitely wasn't being as cooperative as he had been hoping for. Placing a piece of the thinly sliced meat into his mouth since it bought him some time. After chewing and swallowing, he finally came up with an answer. "Why not? Besides, she won't be able to spend the rest of her life with that slave. He has nothing behind him at all." he told him, changing the subject back to the slave once more.
PostPosted: Wed Sep 22, 2010 11:20 pm

Brandon burst from the room, looking up and down the hallway quickly. He didn't see her so decided heading for the doors would be the best bet. Running down the hall, he nearly collided with another slave, resulting in her yelling after him. He ignored her. He had other things to worry about.
Going as fast as he could down the stairs without falling, he hurried to the front door and ripped it open. Nothing. Slamming the door shut, he ran to the back of the house and pulled open the back door. At first, he saw nothing but, as he was about to close the door, he spotted something. A hat.
Letting go of the door, he ran across the grass and knelt beside the hat, picking it up. He looked around, spotting the barn. It was the only place she could be. Hat in one hand and note in the other, he hurried over to the barn. Maybe he could stop her before she left, if she hadn't already.

Violetta's father scoffed, not afraid of hurting the boy's feelings. "Why not? You had an affair, and with her friend no less!" He glared at the boy before tearing off another section of his steak and shoving it angrily into his mouth. When James mentioned the slave again, he rolled his eyes skyward. Was this boy daft or something? Swallowing, he said, "He doesn't need to. I only need him to get her back to the way she used to be before you came along. Once that is accomplished, I will have no further need of him. Once she learns to trust again, she will find a young man, a good young man, they will marry and she will forget all about the slave."

Tell me, what is a human worth without a heart?

She sighed as she entered the barn, some of the horses were still inside, eating or doing things that horses did. Biting her lower lip, she placed her bag down for now and walked over to the back of the stables. He would be there, the midnight colored horse with a few white 'freckles' along his back. Smiling sadly, she ran her had over his muzzle as he snorted.

Rested her cheek against his own, she reached over and grabbed his bridle before slowly pulling away and slipping it on. His dark colored eyes looked at her, as if knowing that they were going on a long journey. Grabbing one of the side saddles, she entered his stall before placing the blanket on his back and the saddle right after. Thankfully she didn't have to spend the time cleaning his hooves since they were already clean. Making sure everything was secure, she opened the stall and lead him out.

Violetta wasn't creative with naming him since his name was Midnight, but that's what he reminded her off, the black sky at night. Holding onto the reins, she lead him over to where she had left her bag and picked it up before getting on. It was rather hard to not to sit sideways in a poofy dress but she didn't have time to change. Lowering his head, he waited on her and she gently lead him forward right before Brandon appeared in the doorway, spooking the horse who reared up the next second.

And this is why she hated dresses, you couldn't sit properly on the horse and stay on it when you had to jump, gallop or something along those lines. The moment the horse went up, she went straight to the ground. The wide eyed horse took off running after that, leaving her in the dust as she winced. Violetta had managed to hit her head against one of the stable doors. Breathing in sharply, she pushed herself up to a sitting position.

For mine seems to have been destroyed.

He ignored the comment about the affair as the father then went on about the slave. "Violetta gets attached to people once she learns to trust them. She won't let him go." that was the reason why she had such a hard time dealing with his betrayal. Violetta cared too much for her own good.
PostPosted: Fri Sep 24, 2010 4:51 pm

Brandon's eyes widened as a horse reared up in front of him. Jumping back, he narrowly managed to avoid being run over by the horse as it bolted out of the barn. Turning his gaze from the back end of the horse to the woman on the floor, he rushed over to Violetta's side.
He had seen her hit her head on the stable doors when she'd fallen so once she'd sat up, he leaned behind her and checked the back of her head. He didn't see any blood but head injuries were funny that way.
Having dropped the hat and note when the horse had run past him, he gently held onto her shoulder, keeping still as he looked over her face. Her pupils looked normal, her eyes focused. He couldn't see anything wrong but he had to make sure.

Violetta's father waved James's concerns away. "It doesn't matter," he assured him. "Once she is married, she will spend more time with her husband than the slave. People drift apart. It happens all the time." Besides, even if Violetta did want to keep the slave, it wasn't like it would matter.

Tell me, what is a human worth without a heart?

When Brandon appeared behind her, she glanced over her shoulder, wondering what he was doing before she blinked when he looked straight at her. Her head hurt though, a bump was most likely forming as well but she didn't want to feel for it. After all if she even brushed her finger tips against it, it would only make the pain even worse and she personally did not want that.

"What?" she asked as he continued to look at her, was something in her eyes? She bit her lip, only now realizing that his hand was on her shoulder.. he was surprisingly gentle. It wasn't something she had expected from him. Blushing at the thought, she looked down at the ground before slowly getting up.

For mine seems to have been destroyed.

He sighed. What could he possibly say to get his man to agree with him? "Another arranged marriage?" he asked, purely curious and maybe he could even use his answer to his advantage. So it didn't matter if she kept the slave? What if the husband fell into a jealous rage? What then? Of course he didn't know if anyone would really do that besides him.
