When her name finally turned up, she found that she didn't know most of the students she had been included with. She recognized a couple of them on sight, such as the Patchwork boil, and she could pin down which one of them was Malodore, but that was about it. As the teacher indicated them, however, she realized that one of them had the same odd instrument as hers.

Once the explanations were given, she sat a moment pondering the collection of notes that her group was supposed to be aiming for, squinting at the board in concentration. Then she looked at her tambourine and gave it a tentative shake. It was a pleasant enough sound to her, but hardly a song. She eyed the other student with a tambourine surreptitiously, but couldn't make out if he was doing anything special to it as of yet, so she decided to experiment on her own.

Gathering up the instrument with a clatter, she moved over to the group of students the Professor had indicated she belonged with and gave what amounted to a friendly but nervous grin. All teeth and eyes inside a glass bubble, she plopped down at a new desk and slid the tambourine to rest in front of her. "Sssso, I am not sssure that thisss really hass ssso many notesss," she thought aloud. "Maybe I can at leasssst get the rhythm?"

After a little fumbling around, she got the tambourine in her hands the way the professor had described when he was telling them about all the instruments. With the halting pace of a beginner, she tried to replicate the pattern indicated for her group. It seemed that she got a bit jumbled in the process and skipped or switched a note somewhere along the line. She wasn't really sure where. The ghoul grimaced and then bit her lip as she tried to figure out where it all went wrong. It didn't sound quite right, but she couldn't pinpoint where. Maybe it would be better to give that another try. She made no comment on her attempt, but instead held her peace for the moment to give others a chance to play with less distraction while she thought about how to correct her playing.

As Blue explained the assignment, Rosc was reminded of the downside to his method of playing. He didn't really know notes, just sounds. He had ignored Namshiel when the older demon had tried to teach him conventional music and Rosanna had learned early on in her efforts to teach him that trying to be traditional in her methods wasn't going to work with him. So he had learned by listening to music, picking out the notes and how they were played and recognizing techniques in the music.

But Blue had explained which strings were which notes... of a sort. Either way, it was worth at least one try.
Setting his fingers to the harp-strings in the only way he had figured how, he pulled at them, listening to the sounds.

It didn't sound right, but it wasn't a terrible sound, either. One of the notes he had played, he wasn't even sure was for any of the groups, but it didn't much matter to him. He had tried, failed, but he hadn't done so in a way that hurt his ears, hadn't screeched a bow across strings like he had when he was younger.
So, in a way, it wasn't so much a failure as it was succeeding in playing, just not the right tune.

The ditty Barth managed had almost nothing to do with the assigned notes, and seemed pulled from the Super Scario theme instead. You play what you know, he guessed. In spite of that fact that Barth had practiced, the notes still came out as puffed warbles.

Nyyrikki watched the professor worriedly and tried to follow along as he quickly went over his instrument. This.. seemed a lot more complicated than his drum set. He corrected his grip on the long metal instrument. He didn't recognize any of his assigned group members, so he stayed where he was to try out the set of notes he'd been given.

Taken a deep breath, he blew across the opening on the flute and out came a note, but not the one he wanted. The reaper cringed and tightened his grip, trying again to hit the note. This time he succeeded, but his confidence had a bit too much of a boost, and the last three notes came out wrong. He bowed his head and looked up at the professor through his dark bangs, hoping everyone else was having a difficult time as well.

This definitely wasn't his drum set...

It appeared West had set himself up to fail from the start, considering that he hadn't actually practiced with any of his drums save for the snare. Faced with the task of playing distinct notes on an instrument where every wild flail of his sticks on a drum sounded the same, the wrath demon was at a loss. Oh well. Disjointed noise? Done.

Joachim inspected the pan flute looking for any sort of cracks or flaws not that he was an expert on it he merely assumed that it worked along the same lines of a wooden flute. It seemed fine to him now the question was what note was what on it. It wasn’t like he could hold it on its side and close over certain holes instead it reminded him more of a pipe organ except he had to blow in the holes in the top.

He pressed his lips to the edge and blew across various pipes with a clear sound of notes.

Joachim - E,F, E, B, G
Group 3 - C C F E B

He frowned, none of the notes were or at least not in the correct order the Professor had wanted it was a little embarrassing considering he at least had some knowledge in music.

Sepheran was a bit saddened by the fact that he was split up from Arachne. At least he did have someone he knew in his group though so it wasn't all bad. Listening intently to the teacher explain what he wanted Sepheran lifted his violin to his chin. The baslisk paused for a moment his thoughts drifting momentarily elsewhere before he realized something. He had already forgotten what notes he was supposed to play!

He hoped Liannan had been listening and so played to what she told him to, something seemed off about his notes though...maybe one notes was right at least. Well he hoped anyway. He should really pay more attention next time...

Cady winced and flattened her ears as a veritable cacophony of noise filled the classroom. It seemed each student was attempting to extricate the most excruciating sounds out of their instrument. If that was the game, Cady could certainly play.

And so she did. With an expression of grim determination, she doggedly held her violin in one fist, while hitting it along the sides and strings with the bow. Each downward stroke was more violent than the last, and by the end of it it seemed like she was not so much playing her instrument as turning it into a bludgeoning victim.

She didn't seem to notice or care which students had been lumped into her group. She certainly didn't recognize any names, anyway. She was too busy assuring her instrument would vividly recally this 'playing' for years to come.

Malodore's brow furrowed in concentration, though naturally nobody saw that because of the mask covering its natural flesh. It seemed easy enough to get notes out of bells, given that if you chimed one, it had to make the appropriate tone... did it not?

That was the theory, at least. The practice was a little rockier. It did its best, though, chiming the bells in what it hoped was the right fashion, but flicking the bells was harder than it seemed. The movement of the wrist required precision, and the wrong note emerged... until the end, when suddenly everything fell into place. For one beautiful moment.

... Sigh.

Jove's little ears flopped back nervously. Vibrations from the voice? Like humming or singing? He glanced around at all the other students, most having success playing the instrument if not getting the correct notes.

He gave the professor another nervous glance as he took the instrument back, and tried to blow into it. Except he couldn't quite manage to get any sort of hum going, it was like the nerves had made his vocal cords vanish. With so much pressure to make a sound, he couldn't even whine properly. So he just sat there and trembled much like a frightened puppy would.

He was certainly going to fail the class at this rate.

The ghost fox wasn't the only one who was looking at the students in the classroom and noticing the different, the teacher was as well. There was a bit of a 'hmmm' from the demon teacher as he studied the poor student. This student needed much more work than he could provide during this class, especially for one of the simplest of the instruments he kept in his magical tickle trunk closet. He thought about the possible choices, weighing his options. He certainly couldn't have a student fail on his watch. He would have to give the student a more private lesson if he couldn't do it, perhaps by the pool. It was a thought that brought a smile to his lips.

"Well then, perhaps you'd be interested in some private lessons so you can be ready for next class?" He said, only slightly forming it as a question.

He gave a look to the rest of the class, it seemed like he was going to be ending the class shortly.

Calder had written what music meant to him. Honestly, he had been chewing on his pencil and trying to think of something clever. Something that would get Professor Blue to want to kill him or stick him with an even worse instrument. As he thought about all the festivals and songs he knew, what they meant to him, and how he could write that in an impressive way........he got sidetracked.

He was watching Professor Blue's long locks of silver hair and thinking about all the types of hairstyles he would do to them if given the chance and time. Then he wondered what sort of styles would look best on the professor, and then thought a nice barrette here and there, maybe with music notes, would look adorable!

In no time at all, his homework was taken with just the name and date on it, and he was left with his mouth open in shock, unable to dive for the sheet of paper. At least he wished it didn't have his name, but now he just looked like a moron.

Frowning, he leaned back and sighed before he was divided into a group to practice the instrument he didn't even like. The entire classroom exploded in off beats that made his ears go back and twitch. He too attempted to try his harmonica, and brought it to his lips to try to match the notes. Notes??? He was just getting used to making it make a sound in a steady manner. Who needed NOTES?!

Giving it a shot, he blew into his harmonica and moved it along his lips, finding it hit every note BUT the ones he needed.

Jove nodded meekly. He didn't understand, he could speak fine, and had even hummed before. Not that the latter was common knowledge, the only time he made noises like that were for his brother, trying to imitate the lullaby he had once heard so he could help Ren sleep.

At least the professor didn't seem upset at Jove's performance anxiety, and wasn't going to fail him on the spot. Professor Blue might even be able to coax a sound out of him if it was just the two of them. With enough relief to calm most of his shaking, Jove set the kazoo down on the desk. He would conquer that little instrument eventually.

Lucien wasn't a very good listener when he had a tambourine in his hands to distract him but he at least understood that he was supposed to try and play certain notes from the list of them on the board. What ones was he supposed to play though? And... how exactly did he manage that? His confusion was consoled nicely by Israfel's hand, and the "beautiful" music that came from the siren's lips. There was a bit of smile forming on the air spirit's lips as he listened. He would accompany his song with his tambourine, yes! He gave a squeeze to Israfel's hand and started to hit the tambourine on top of his own head so he could keep holding Israfel's hand.

Turns out, knocking yourself over the head with a tambourine was not a good way to get the notes you were attempting. Not that Lucien could tell the difference. Jingle jingle was wonderful either way, or all the way.

Professor Blue had about enough of all of the attempts by his students. He had initially had more planned for them but with half his class not bothering to show up today, he thought it was best to postpone it for another day when more of them showed up and he could torment teach a larger group of students.

"Good try, everyone," he told them. "Next class you'll all do better."

Jove especially would do better once Professor Blue helped him along. Perhaps they could have a nice lesson by the pool.

"I had more planned for today but since many of your fellow student body decided not to show up, we'll pick up during next class. I expect all of you to practice in the meanwhile, and not to be late next time." His eyes were looking at a few students in particular, but otherwise he made no motion towards either.

"You may all go," he waved them off before turning to Jove. No need for a pool, they could just have a lesson here before the ghost had a chance to run off.

Grey Dragon

"Jove right?" He questioned briefly. "Are you ready for some extra help?"
