[Outside Scree]

After being haunched over and furiously scrawling in his journal for several minutes, Vince took a deep breath and exhaled slowly trying to calm his nerves. He then placed the journal inside his satchel slung over his shoulder and folded the flap over the opening before standing up.

At a glance it was clear that he had spent a great deal of time preparing for this particular venture. He was no stranger to hiking or spelunking; several of his initial expeditions with his dad were done in or near caverns before. His backpack seemed about to burst and had even adopted a somewhat spherical appearance like a balloon. What few items could be seen on the pack included: a drinking flask, a coil of rope, and a few cans of repel clipped to the top handle (He had had far too many run-ins with zubats to know that you can’t conduct a careful field study with them screeching and flitting about) and it wasn’t like he had any pokemon with him to defend himself if he had a wild encounter, so best to avoid one altogether. He wore leather gloves, hiking boots, and a headlamp over a hardhat. His belt also had a few snack bars sticking out of it and also holstered a rock hammer. Finally he had a moderately-sized satchel around his shoulder, which now carried his 2 journals (one for field notes and one for personal use) and writing utensils. A lone pokeball could also be seen tucked into his right vest pocket as the flap that was to cover it had apparently been damaged in a previous endeavor.

He was determined to follow the plan he had set for himself: Get in and conduct a careful survey of the area and investigate any places of interest while carefully noting their location. Initially he had prepared himself for having to do something drastic in order to achieve his goal of ridding this place of careless human disruption, but after thinking about it more this seemed to be a much more reasonable way of handling the situation. If all went well he’d at least have enough information to publish a preliminary report that would hopefully generate enough interest for other expeditions to be sent here in unexplored reaches of the cave, untouched by the general public’s grubby little hands. Perhaps by THEN the area would be sanctioned off for scientific study.

In the meantime his goal, was to study whatever he could for as long as he could, and avoid human contact as much as possible. In the unfortunate case that another human were contacted, he was to deal with them as civilly as possible. He shuddered as he thought of meeting another over eager fossil hunter within the cave. Images of an inexperienced, snot nosed 12 year old brat haphazardly swinging around a pickaxe suddenly came to mind. remember civilly he had to remind himself.

He tried not to notice or make any sort of eye contact with the people he passed, but it was rather difficult given that he also wanted to keep looking at all the wonderfully exposed rock that were strewn all about in front of the cave. On one occasions he could’ve sworn he saw someone use bubble wrap to envelop a promising find. Wait...bubble wrap?! It occurred to Vince that there were far worse ways of protecting finds (at least some people had the sense and decency to even try and protect their findings). Still it seemed a bit…demeaning. What did these people think these were, packages? Would they be content having their loved ones remains wrapped in bubble wrap rather than a proper coffin if they were to die?

The young man shook his head slightly as he trudged through the scree area. He didn’t have time to even think about such things. He had a mission after all.

Just before reaching the entrance of the cave, he stopped for a moment considering if entering would be a good idea. He had seen several people go in and was sure that if he were to follow suit, he would undoubtedly run into some of them given the enclosed space. Furthermore it didn’t seem as though there were many, if any, people out here at the moment, and he could spend some quality time gaining some insight into what kinds of rocks he would be looking at further within the cave where the lighting would be poorer, and without any interruption too! After weighing his options he decided to initiate his study in the outside scree. After setting down his pack on a nearby rock he fished a small camera out of one of its numerous pockets and proceeded to snap several pictures of the area. After a few minutes of picture taking he was ready for the first preliminary sweep of the area, making careful note of everything he observed as he went.

"Well," Lex said, sitting down and pulling his bag into his lap, opening it up. "At first I thought this could have been part of a sea bed. But my second fossil rather puts a damper on that idea." He removed both carefully wrapped up fossils, his Flareon settling at his side. "But, how were you searching for fossils?"

"I don't think there really a wrong way, well this is a wrong way.. I'm sure some paleontologist is crying somewhere because all the disturbances in the rock layers." He mused and started to unwrapping the top one.

Michiko sighed. "This is pretty embarrassing but...I've been looking under fallen rocks."

She scooted closer to see the fossils and brought out a camera. "May I take pictures? I want them for my notes." NOW, this was Michiko's forte. Taking notes and discovering something new always made Michiko happy.

"I don't mind at all." Lex finished unwrapping his helix fossil and carefully put the bubble wrap to the side. "I can't remember which on this is, Omanyte or Kabuto because they are both shell fossil resurrects."

"Do you want me to hold it up so you can get a clearer picture?" He question. "Do you also write down your findings?" He missed talking scientist to people specially about Pokemon findings.

"Why did you consider looking under fallen rocks? There was always going to be the possibility that it crushed the fossil in the fall or the fossil was going to be trapped in the ground."

Lex, Michiko

"Mrrmff! Don't, umhf, don't be so quick to dismiss yourself, boy!" A voice, spoken around a mouthful of bear-claw pastry, addressed Lex. A large man clad in an ill-fitting guide uniform with a name tag that said 'Dennis' was ambling through the cave.
He paused next to the pair leering over the finds with undisguised interest before wiping his mouth with the back of his hand. Half his pastry dropped to the floor without him noticing.
"What the egg'eads told us about this place is that it's a jumble of strata, especially out on that scree. A whole bunch of habitats, millions of years apart, are all mixed up out there or something." He took a fierce bite of his pastry.
"Nife foffils!" The large man pointed toward the specimens, before ambling off, deeper into the cave.

Michiko wrote down: Omanyte or Kabuto??? Must ask for results later.

I haven't gotten the chance to write down findings...until now." She looked down at her notes and types it in as she spoken once again. "It was also a possibility that the fossils could have been the fallen rocks. And even if they were broken, it was a possibility that there could be more fossils near by since pokemon tend to move around in groups instead of going solo. It was safer and guarantees survival or at least the minimize deaths, I believe."

She placed her notes down on her lap and held out her camera, "And yes please. More light the better." Her litwick came close to help shed light...but a shadow and voice startled her, making her squeak in surprise. She couldn't help but gape. The large man was clad in an ill-fitted guide uniform with the name Dennis...eating a pastry. Her litwick shivered and moved to hid behind her....since he did look like a sweet. As he talked to Lex and moved on down the cave she looked back at the other rocket member. "Do you know who that is?....DO YOU THINK HE KNOWS WHO WE ARE?"

She whispered with concern, she can't help but feel a little bit impressed. The guide knows what he was talking about and she can respect his knowledge on the subject.

An oddly-shaped rock caught his attention, and the trainee moved closer to investigate it. It was shaped like a crescent moon, and seemed to have a few circular holes - or at least deep indentations - along its surface. It wasn't a fossil, though, so he ignored it and frowned, turning to study the floor again. Maybe he missed something..? Seriously, where were all the fossils? Surely there were some somewhere around here. There had to be.

After carefully studying the rocks strewn throughout the area it was evident that there were several different types of rock here. This made reconstructing the environment more problematic than he had initially realized.

The different rocks that were scattered here didn't seem to exhibit any sort of general pattern, therefore making it difficult to determine the stratigraphic sequence. There was just no way to tell which rocks were older and which ones were younger. Was this a standard depositional basin or were there perhaps unconformities or faulting events that further complicated the geology? Did the possible limestones, shales and sandstones he had observed represent a coastal transgressional sequence? A regression perhaps? Or was it something else entirely? It was clear that he wouldn't be able to easily get any answers to these questions by staying out here in the scree. If he wanted to know more, he determined that he would need to look at the source outcrop to get a clearer picture of what was really going on here.

This would mean having to observe rocks from the cavern itself, and in doing so, would mean risking contact with people.

After a brief moment to weigh the pros and cons, he decided that the information that could be gained was worth the risk, and began packing up his things to move to the new, much more promising location.

As he did so though, a glint caught his eye amidst the rubble. Curious, he stood and squinted at the reflected light. Suddenly a cold chill could be felt running down his spine upon identifying the source: A shattered glass bottle.

Staring wide-eyed in disbelief now at the glass, the right corner of his mouth twitched in silent fury. This was exactly why the public shouldn't be allowed to set foot in these places.

The guides don’t even prevent this kind of thing from happening?! If the league is going to supply the area with "knowledgeable" guides, one would hope that they’d have the decency to help out with at least keeping the site clean! Honestly, is nothing sacred to these people?! They don't bother to advise or enforce a no littering policy? How hard would it be to provide a sign with basic rules for all to see?!

Clearly this...mess could not be allowed to remain here. He cautiously bent and picked up each jagged shard of glass and placed it in a small bag intended for sample collections. As he did so he considered scattering these same shards all throughout the inside of the cave's dark pathways in the hopes that the insuing injuries would not only punish those who had dared desecrate this site, but also be enough cause to close the area off to the public, at least temporarily. He was beginning to think that the desperate measures he earlier dismissed might be the better way to go. After all, things were worse than he had thought.

After stuffing the bag of glass shards in his bag. He gathered the rest of his things, did a quick supply check before venturing closer to the entrance of the cave.

[Outside scree (next to the cave entrance)]

((Awesome! Keeping the Cubone please! Thank You! biggrin ))

As Vince approached the rock wall just left of the entrance of the cave, he gazed up at it in wonder. Magnificent! As long as he remained outside he figured he was still was still much less likely to encounter someone than if he were to actually enter the cave.

After taking a few more moments to admire the wall. Vince went to work unpacking his equipment. Just as he had finished doing so, a sudden grunt from behind him made him jump. He swerved around to face the source of the sound.

About a meter away was a Cubone, bone club raised threateningly. Coprolite! He was so preoccupied with the rocks and the glass earlier that he had forgotten to use the repel! It was too late to use it now.

Well at least it's a Cubone and not a Rhydon or something Vince breathed a sigh of relief. Given that he had no pokemon to defend himself with he would've been in big trouble if it was something larger and more aggressive.

Come to think of it he had never seen a cubone this close before. Setting aside his compass and camera for a moment. Vince took up his field notebook and knealt down to try to make a sketch. Now here was a pokemon with some style!

"Wow just look at the way the skull-"

Before he could finish, The cubone had lunged at him. Instinctively, he dropped the notebook and scrambled to get out of the way, just barely dodging the attack. Instead the bone club caught the compass, smashing it to pieces against a rock. The effort to dodge the attack left Vince unsteady and he stumbled backwards tripping and falling over some of the debris that littered the area.

Dazed the young man looked up in shock. What was going on? Cubone were supposed to be docile, he had never known one to attack unprovoked. Yet this one was clearly not happy. Something really bad must've happened to tick it off this much. Wait...maybe it was displeased with all the recent visitors invading and trashing its home?

Vince's wide-eyed look of shock gave way to a smirk.
"I guess that makes two of us then"

The cubone responded by attempting another swing at Vince. He quickly unholstered his rock hammer and held it up with one arm to block the attack. The club made a resounding CLANG against the metal hammer, forcefully knocking it out of Vince's hand and sending it flying about a meter away. This little guy may have been small, but it was still a pokemon. Vince clutched the hand that had held the hammer n pain and started to panic, he didn't have any experience with pokemon batttles, let alone ones in which he would have to fight instead. he felt his pockets for something that would help. His hand touched upon a spherical object in his vest pocket and he pulled out a pokeball.

No time for anything else. He immediately flung it at the cubone which it hit and opened capturing the cubone in a beam of red light. He knew that it probably wouldn't hold him long given that he wasn't able to damage it first, but at least it would give him some time to flee.

He quickly gathered his most important pocessions and began to make a run for it, but to his surprise he looked back to see that the pokeball had now stopped moving. He had apparently gotten lucky and caught it. Well that was unexpected. Vince approached the pokeball and picked it up. He stared at it puzzeld before placing it in his vest pocket and returning to his chosen site of study by the entrance. If nothing else he could send it to his dad for his research later. Before continuing though he unclipped a can of repel from his bag and made sure to spray plenty of it all around the site.

Unfortunately he was skeptical of if this particular repel would work at all, since the person who sold it to him at the mart seemed kinda shady. However when he purchased it he didn't had time to look for alternatives since he needed to be at the site ASAP so it was the best he had at this point.

after regaining his composure he returned to his work photographing the area and carefully scrutinizing the details of the rock wall, all the while hoping that the repel would work on people as well.
