Well, you can't take all the gameplay elements as canon. First aid sprays and hebrs for example. They're gameplay components, and shouldn't be considered Canon. Technically speaking, Jill, Chris, Claire, Leon, etc. Never got injured. At least not badly. I mean, obviously, if they got bit, they'd be infected. Just the same, inventory space is a gameplay element. Theoretically, if Chris has the shotgun, it should be in his hands all the time, and if he ran out of ammo, and had to use his handgun, he'd put the shotgun aside and draw the handgun from his thigh holster.
