So there seems to be a pattern that occurs with the winners and runner-ups of American Idol. While it's true that not everyone follows the trend, it's still pretty common.
Season 1 - Kelly Clarkson won, Justin Guarini runner-up. She became a big hit; so she doesn't follow the trend.
Season 2 - Ruben Studdard won, Clay Aiken runner-up. Clay Aiken has been more active than Ruben has been - thus begins the trend.
Season 3 - Fantasia Barrino won, Diana DeGarmo runner-up. Neither won has done much so far, but Fantasia is beginning her music career - so she doesn't follow the trend.
Season 4 - Carrie Underwood won, Bo Bice runner-up. Carrie obviously is majorly famous now, probably the most famous of all the Idol contests so far. Bo Bice has done some music, but isn't as familiar as Carrie's work. Thus the trend continues.
Season 5 - Taylor Hicks won, Katharine McPhee runner-up. Haven't seen much action lately from either one... but I think Katharine has been more active than Taylor. So in a way the trend continues still.
Season 6 - Jordin Sparks won, Blake Lewis runner-up. Trend doesn't apply here. Jordin is more active than Blake.
Season 7 - David Cook won, David Archuleta runner-up. David A. seems to be more active than David Cook. Though they seem to be pretty tied sometimes. Trend applies somewhat here.
Season 8 - Kris Allen won, Adam Lambert runner-up. Both have released their first albums and who ended up with more popularity - Adam Lambert. While it's still pretty early in their career, I'm going to still say the trend applies here.
