A Dangerous Game

Nodding, the teen stood upright and stretched his arms high over his head. "Yeah. What about you? You fix things with Mom yet?" Daniel looked around, spying a suspicious lack of Ellery's things. He wasn't home yet? It was late. Usually he was home by now.

Fredrich shook his head slowly. "The weight of our jobs is weighing heavily over your mother again. I'll give him the night to do whatever clears his mind then sit him down to talk to him." He chose not to dwell on the subject. "Your disguise is very good. How was your acting?"

Deciding to let it go, Daniel removed his wig and sighed. "It would've been better if some girl hadn't decided to try and infringe on the mission. She wanted the kill, but I managed to get it first. I don't know how to deal with rival assassins." Sitting back down, he leaned back and tried to relax, his muscles too tense to settle fully.

"Hmm, well this is the first time you've met another assassin." said Fredrich as he scratched his chin thoughtfully. "You won't have to worry about having your disguise blown by them, or being killed by them." Not now, at least. If they were to recognize him or Daniel as the Nightingale then they would've no doubt hunted them, but that was the perk to hiding their identity. "When it comes to them, it's a matter of getting the kill first, so your worry will be to not get sabotaged by them. I'll teach you about adaptability next week. How are you in controlling your emotions?"

Honestly, that girl didn't make him worry. He didn't care too much about her. She wasn't even that threatening to his reputation. She was just annoying. The question about his emotions, however, was enough to snap him to attention. "It's not easy, but I've been keeping Julian at a distance like you asked," he replied, reluctantly setting his phone down and furrowing his brow.

"Hmm, well you've only got two days left until you're free to act as you please. You're doing fine." assured Fredrich. He moved past Daniel to go to the kitchen, where his laptop was open and waiting on him. "Be sure to get a good rest. I'll have another mission for you tomorrow."

He nodded, going towards the stairs. "Yes sir," said the teen as he walked up the stairs and towards his bedroom. He needed a shower and more sleep than he thought he did. As he stepped into his room, the front door opened and closed.
Ellery tossed his keys onto the front table before heading towards the stairs himself, not bothering with a greeting. He was clearly still upset with his husband.

Hearing the door himself, Fredrich glanced up from his work to see Ellery angrily storming around. "Oh good, you're back." he said as he returned to his laptop. "Still throwing your tantrum, I see." he said with faint amusement.

"It's not a tantrum, it's a protest," he corrected, continuing up the stairs. "So long as Daniel is unable to be with Julian, I am unable to be with you. It's simple, dear, please try to keep up." Ellery made his way to his studio, where he'd been sleeping for the past month ever since Daniel had gotten this assignment.

The next day came. It felt like ages. Julian ended up not going to that restaurant, not wanting to go alone and not wanting to invite anyone other than Daniel. He laid on his bed all night, either texting Daniel or staring at his phone in hopes of a reply coming. None came.

It was early in the morning. Julian yawned, bags under his eyes, yet he still waited at the sidewalk for Daniel to leave his house. He was losing hope. Daniel just... ignored him nowadays, as if treating him like he were just an annoying classmate. Julian kept wracking through his brain for some kind of answer to this madness, and every possible explanation didn't make him feel good.
But maybe... maybe today would be the day? Maybe whatever hold is on Daniel would finally leave and he'd see that smile again?

Daniel trudged out of the house, exhausted beyond belief. All night, all he could hear was the disappointment in Julian's voice. It broke his heart. Shutting the door behind him, he looked over to see Julian faithfully waiting for him. Great. He walked over silently, then nodded in the direction of the school. "Let's go," he said rather quietly, then started to walk.

At the sight of the lumbering giant, Julian perked up slightly. "Hey!" he greeted, only to be given two grunted words. He watched Daniel walk off and hurriedly followed him like a puppy. "So, umm... How was your night? Did you sleep? I didn't get much sleep. I was, uh... pretty busy, heh." He felt stupid. He felt like one of those girls that kept trying to get Daniel's attention, and he hated how that was what he was, in essence.

Daniel shrugged, trying to stay at least a step ahead of Julian so he couldn't see the pained look on his face. This was brutal, most definitely torture. What made it even worse was that if that b-tch had ever been tasked with the same assignment, she would've passed with flying colors. Well, speedwalking monochrome. She had no personality to speak of and definitely no friends.
"Sorry about dinner," he muttered.

Julian frowned at the shrug, and the distance, and the... everything. It was about a hundred degrees outside, yet he needed a jacket to protect him from this cold shoulder.
Suddenly, Daniel spoke, and Julian perked up. "No! It's okay! You were busy. Besides, it's not like that building's gonna go anytime soon. We could head there tonight if you want?" He bit his lip as he awaited a response.
In his wait, he saw the school getting closer. People were looming around the parking lot and the area in front of the doors, chatting amongst their friends while blearily waiting for the bell to ring. There was one girl he could make out standing at the gate all alone, looking down at her feet. She had big, blonde pigtails and looked, well, really tiny. Was she new?
The girl, as if feeling eyes on her, looked up at in their direction. She blinked for a second before gasping. "You!!" she snarled while pointing accusingly at the two. "I knew you'd be here, you twerp! I knew it was you all along!! Thought you could hide behind that dumb wig! HA!"
Julian blinked and pointed at himself, then looked over his shoulder to see no one else around. What was that girl talking about? Wig?

It was fortunate that the girl showed up when she did. Daniel didn't have an answer to Julian's request. He was terrified that if he spoke, he'd end up spilling it all. Realizing who the girl was, Daniel rolled his eyes and kept walking. "Shut up. Your voice is so incredibly annoying," he said to her, having forgotten her name already.
