When I read a book I hate...
  ...I don't finish it.
  ...I finish it.
...I finish it and rant for days about how much time I wasted on that POS.

I thought there would be a topic for this already, but I suppose there isn't--unless I missed it somehow.

Have you ever read a book that you just couldn't stand? A book that made you grind your teeth? A book that made you want to chuck it across the room?

I have an irresistable compulsion to finish every book I begin, no matter how awful.

My worst reads:
The Pearl by John Steinbeck
Eragon by Christopher Paolini
Portrait of a Killer by Patricia Cornwell
Anything by Laurell K. Hamilton after Obsidian Butterfly, when her books became porn.
The Giver by whoever the hell wrote it.

What books do you hate?

I'm surprised you gave Laurell till Obsidon Butterfly, I figured the books started tanking once she started boning everything in site after book six (which holy cow the name escapes me!)

One question. Why do you hate Eragon?

Ooh, I'll take this one! It's one of my most hated books as well, along with Cell by Stephen King.

Paolini made his success by publishing his book first with his parent's company (who obviously didn't think of editing the book), then passing it on to a higher publisher. The very fact that he wrote it when he was 15 is beside the point (which, they touted that SO often). He's 22 now - he should ahve gone back and edited out MANY parts for grammar, structure, and general nonsensity.

Let's not even include the fact that it's a ripoff of several other major franchises - it's Dragonriders of Pern and Lord of the Rings meets Star Wars. One of the things that I hate the most in the book - at the very beginning there's a complaint of a lack of money to purchase food. Yet, when they went to the market, his uncle gave him money. There are several other points, but.. yeah, I haven't read the book since the first time and I have no plans to go back and re-read it.

And my rant on Cell by Stephen King - yeah, it's RIGHT HERE, in my journal.

Don't forget David Eddings, and the whole 'I have a different-coloured palm' thing going on!

Miss-Mishi

The Grapes of Wrath By John Steinbeck. This book, I couldn't get past the first chapter. I think it has been distinguished as the book with the longest run on sentence in American Literature. And what may you ask is the first few pages ALL about? The air. It was really dry. Like really really dry. I GET IT! The air was DRY! Can we all just agree the air was freaking dry and move on with our LIVES?!

Longest sentence, eh? Have you read 100 Years of Solitude? There's a sentence in there, that really, truly, is about the size of a moderate paragraph. No joke.

Well, I liked The Giver, but I'm totally with you on hating Eragon. I'm going to finish reading the series, but I'm going to hate every minute of it. I've never read so much purple prose in my life. The only reason I'll finish reading them is so that if I ever meet Christopher Paolini I'll be able to tell him in depth why I hate his book so much.

Well, good luck with that!

Anyway, tried to force myself to read the first book, 'cause it was recommended. Got through that OK.

Second one... not as lucky. Or maybe it is lucky... it depends on whose point of view, I suppose.

I really dislike the Twilight series.
That's really about it. . .
(And I'm not too estatic about biographies either.)

I enjoyed 'Mao's Last Dancer' and 'Chinese Cinderella', though...

... but then again, other biographies seem really dull.

Anything by Beverly Cleary biggrin

And most supposedly "realistic" fiction involving teenagers and high school. Which are completely untrue and unrealistic.

dido!
though most people find me rather unusual since I also do not enjoy Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet"; though for the last time it's a lust story, not a love story! talk2hand

Yeah, that's true...

... I mean, in one Scene, Romeo's moaning about how 'the lovely Rosalind is going to join a convent...' (Maybe because of him! xp )

... and then, he gatecrashes a party (his mortal enemy's!!!) , along with his friends, sees his 'mortal enemy', and goes, 'I'm in love!'. Immature much.

... But then again, Juliet is only 14 in the story. (Yeah, it's true. Check it again and see!)

I found Romeo and Juliet to be Shakespeare's most boring play. Give me A Midsummer's Night Dream anytime 3nodding

I liked 'Twelfth Night'. My favorite Shakespeare work.

Now, I'm about to state something I hate about a book that came out recently that I'm loving. Brisingr. I love it and it is amazing but Eragon seems to change his mood every five bloody minutes! First he's heroic. Then he's violent. Then he's confused. Then he's crying into his non-existant pillow. Then he's wanting to get laid by an elf! Can he not just make up his mind and the first chapter or so of the book makes him seem very unlike he does in the other books. It really does. burning_eyes

Maybe it's because the author hasn't really gotten the personality of the character(s) down properly yet... and so, is unsure of how exactly the character(s) would think.

I actually didn't like "Twilight". I thought it was pretty boring.
Watch, I'm like public enemy number one now. xd
But it's true, there was no plot until the end of the book; I didn't even bother to go see the movie. rolleyes ...What?
Then I learned later on that I could actually keep up with the story just by reading what's in the quotation marks eek That could have saved me some time...

No, you're right. Twighlight flopped... And the movie sucked hard.
I will admit this... Twighlight was very addicting at first, but we all know that it was only the fanservice that kept us reading. I started reading it when the series was still new, so I was really GaGa for all of her characters, who sounded totally sexy heart ... Until the movie came out. Then the appeal of reading about sexy people died. gonk
The story overall is ok. The ending (Breaking Dawn) REALLY sucked. evil The end was really loose and nothing pulled together all that well, I think.

Yes. We all know that Twilight is addictive. There are only a few that hate it from the start that I know of. But, thinking back on it, I really wish that I didn't waste my time with it. It bored the heck out of me when I tried to go back and reread it.

But there's no book that I hate outright besides the Twilight series. There are books I'd prefer not to read, but I think the only book I'd rather not read are the fourth and fifth Maximum Ride books.

I couldn't have said it better, my opinion exactly.

never really dislike many books but i have to sayTwilight is at the top of my very short list . Granted i only read the first book, i didn't think it was well written and me being a Mythology/folklore buff , the sparkling and vegetarian vampires killed me, now i do realize its the whole author's creative license thing going on but still. On top of that Vampire books normally aren't my cup of tea in the first place.

I read about 300 pages into 'Salem's Lot by Stephen King, and couldn't finish it... which says a lot about that book. I almost always finish a book all they way through from beginning to end. I tried my best with 'Salem's Lot, but just couldn't do it. It was so ridiculously boring, I felt like I was wasting my time waiting for it to get good.

When I was twelve I had to read The Wind In The Willows by god knows who for a book report. Maybe it was because I was young but I absolutley cannot stand that book. Personally, there was no plot, and most of the characters were dull. It just bored me beyond belief! No offense to ANYONE who likes that book, that's just my opinion.
