BLACKHEART

Just as her name implies, Blackheart has no love for anything; the fairest emotion she feels is desire. Petty because she can be and cruel by nature, she is a dominant doe who has turned her brother Unwanted into something of a servant. Do not cross this one: she was taught well by momma Malice and is still very close to her .. until the day comes when it's more profitable not to be.

UNWANTED

Thoroughly downtrodden by his sister Blackheart, Unwanted is relatively convinced he has no place in life beyond that of a peon or a servant. He will not make eye contact with Blackheart (or Malice, or really any doe), and goes about his business as if stepping on eggshells. He might have been something else had he escaped his family, but he is a fragile, hypersensitive type.

LIONESS

Willful, ambitious and has a certain low cunning. She is, in her opinion, quite astute, and feels slighted when people do not jump to her erratic commands. She resents the customs and conventions put on her because of her gender, but never realizes that people do not come to her or respect her commands because she is an ineffectual leader.

DEATHTOUCH

Pure as the driven snow, with a coy look and fluttering eyelashes and the perfect tilt of her head so that her long hair slides over one shoulder ... but lethal. She's a psychopath to the full extent of the definition -- and most don't find that out until too late.

WATERSPRING

In the dead of winter, sometimes there is not enough snow on the ground to melt for water. In the middle of a cold, dry winter, one of the driest in tribe memory, this buck went in search of water to drink -- his tribe was thirsty and there were new foals who should not have been made to suffer. Everyone thought he was a fool for walking out into nothingness in search of water nowhere to be found .. until by chance (or not), the totoma stomped his hoof in frustration, cracked a thin layer of frozen dirt, and up bubbled fresh water from a natural spring. The buck's one act of luck potentially saved an entire tribe (and absolutely saved some newborn foals) from a slow death from thirst.

Waterspring doesn't talk much beyond grunts and shrugs, more prone to action than words. He is a bit stolid and awkward around everyone but small children, where his natural paternal instincts come out (well .. in enough time).

BREAKTHROUGH

Breakthrough will do it, will keep doing it, until she succeeds -- or until she dies. All she needs is the direction, the suggestion, She is single-minded in her intensity, and some say there is something a little less than sane in her bright orange eyes; it might be because without a task put before her, she tends to linger in one place, inactive and still. However, she will do whatever she has set out to do with a gleam in her eyes and a wild grin twisting up her mouth.

HONEYMOUTH

Cloying-sweet, soft-spoken, the epitome of innocence. Groomed to be so.

SLICKROCK

Hard to pin down, Slickrock is interested in everyone and everything, small smiles and helpful eyes and worried mein, at least long enough to get your secrets out of you. Then it's on to the next one. Watch your footing.

AUTUMN-CROWNED

Exuberant and childlike in her joy and innocence, Autumn-crowned lives for the days when the sun slats golden through the mangroves and she can make flower crowns to wear in her hair. She hates hot weather and usually hides during the hottest part of the year, but is a evening- and night-owl and can often be found running about in the fading light, as happy as a child. It doesn't matter that she's an adult, should be acting like an adult -- there's no fun or joy in that. A gentle madness.

BLACKFISH

As a child she played in the icy streams and meltwater pools in her tribe's territory; as an adult, she was always among the volunteers to go to the deepest lakes and farthest rivers to bring in a catch from the waters. She had a taste for fish, but also one for danger -- her favorite thing to do was haul in the big, slick, struggling blackfish from the surf, jaws clamped into its flesh. Time after time she did this, until one day she returned with a fish and earned its name.

Blackfish is strong and competent and maybe a little overconfident, but she makes up for it in her unceasing drive to help others.

PALE ASH

Dainty, long-legged and ephemeral, with glowing eyes the hallmark of his kimeti mother, Pale Ash seems to exist in his brother Woodsmoke's shadow, but does not mind that. He is quiet -- though some might at first think him withdrawn, Pale Ash is just thoughtful and likes to think before he speaks. This means sometimes he makes people more than a little impatient if they're waiting on a quick answer or snap judgment from him, but it also means Pale Ash is usually fairly zen.

Every bit as athletic and capable as Woodsmoke, Pale Ash prides himself on his fleet feet and quick foot work.

WOODSMOKE

Somehow the combination of kimeti and kiokote ancestry culminated in Woodsmoke being rather large and muscular for a kiokote -- he is an athletic, outdoorsy type, given to feats of strength and with an odd knack for hunting. If he were a human, he'd be a Canadian lumberjack, complete with a polite, friendly, easygoing manner.

CRY FOR HELP

Worldly and world-weary, Cry for Help often is tasked with escorting his odd sister Shallow on her doings through the swamp. Somehow he always manages to find the broken ones. This has left him a bit frustrated and sometimes snappy and bitter, but he's not a bad sort. He's followed around by a spectral crane; he can't tell if the thing is dead or alive.

SHALLOW

Shallow is innocent, though prone to brooding. She has fits of temper that leave her wandering through the swamp at night, melancholy and angry at the same time -- though what brings these fits on she doesn't know. They embarass her when they're through. She is wary of others because she can't sort out their intentions, but she can get on well enough with help from her brother Cry for Help.
