Patrick would keep his hand outstretched until Reese was able to take hold - he knew the worth of patience and listened quietly as she told him her own favourite colour whilst using his grip to rise to her feet. Once she was up, Patrick would keep a gentle hold of her hand, leading the way whilst ensuring they walked at a comfortable pace side by side - Why expend more energy moving swiftly, when they appeared to be out of danger - at least for the time being...

Had the circumstances been different, then their walk through the forest on what would have proven to have been a wonderfully sunny day might just have been an enjoyable one - but trying to keep his focus on the present, rather than the past, the Diviner would follow his ears, his eyes scanning the environment around them before the lightest of glints from the water's surface caught his eye.

"Here we go," Leading Reese towards the edge, Patrick would take a glance around before looking for somewhere shallow that they could pause without the fear of falling in, "It's not too deep here," Only releasing her hand once he was sure she was comfortable, Patrick would crouch down, cupping a handful of the cooling water and sipping it before running the rest of it over his arms, "Did you need a hand at all?" Scooping up another handful, he ran it around his face and neck, hating the fact that the blood had matted patches of his hair which he picked at before washing his hands again in the water...

Although the forest around them was calm, there was still no sign of wildlife and as Patrick straightened up, brushing off the excess water from his arms he would turn to look around the clearing - Naturally, he intended to stand guard whilst Reese got herself cleaned up, but couldn't help but wonder where the White Bird that had drawn him towards the forest in the first place had gotten to...

He had considered calling out her name, but with the murderers still in the vicinity, he didn't want to draw any unwanted attention to their location if he could help it... "...Where are you, Silly Bird...?" he would breathe a sigh, muttering this beneath his breath as he hoped she was someplace safe...

Reese
watched the light reflecting off of the water, feeling a sort of calm as the shapes on the rivers surface seemed to be more clear than anything she'd seen since arriving at Eoana. She let out a soft sigh and gave a small smile in Patricks direction, "no, I'm okay," she replied to his offer for assistance, before crouching down at the waters edge and sticking her hands into the water. There was a deep chill in the river that almost instantly numbed her fingertips, but the girl didn't seem to mind to much as she splashed her face several times, rubbing off whatever blood had dried before wetting the loose hair around her face. She knew her cloak was ruined, there was really no saving it but it seemed to chilly to go without it. She did her best to clean some of the white fabric, watching as the dark, almost black splotches on the coat were almost invisible to her but were clearly stained.

When she was done with her coat she washed her face again, never feeling really clean until she found there were a few spots on her face that felt different under her touch. A small scrape near her left eye that was scabbing over, and several small scratches that weren't nearly enough to have bled at all. She assumed they were from when they'd started into the forest, but she knew well enough she could have gotten them simply leaving the school.

When she felt confident that she was no longer as much of a mess she washed her hands again and tucked the loose hair around her face behind her ears, not even considering covering her scars as she usually would under...other circumstances. When Reese stood she had panicked when she'd gotten up and couldn't find him as his form had blended into the darkened backdrop of trees, but it was light enough that, after a moment his hair stood out against the darkness and she had quickly made her way over to him, she stood beside him quietly for a moment, before turning her face up to the boy, "Um...Thank you, Patrick" she started, "I don't know what would have happened if you hadn't helped me at the festival," she added as she picked at the hem of her cloak.

As initially intended, Patrick would stand guard as Reese washed off what she could of the blood from her face and clothing, it was a shame that such a pretty cloak had become bloodied, but in hindsight, it was perhaps better her clothing had been damaged, rather than herself... Still trying to push the thoughts of what had happened from his mind, the Diviner's gaze would flit between Reese and the forest clearing in the hopes that any flash of white might just indicate that Branwen was there...

Hearing a panicked breath from Celebrar as she rose to her feet, Patrick would swiftly return his attention towards the female, fearing she had perhaps seen or felt something before relaxing as he realised she appeared to have lost track of where he'd come to stand... He would flash a gentle smile again - it didn't matter that she couldn't see it - before watching as she made her way over, thanking him for coming to her aid,

"My Aunt would never have let me forget it," With such a large family, there was inevitably someone who could see the here and now - even if it was perhaps slightly delayed in transition - and had the woman gotten wind of him abandoning a pretty girl in such a dire moment, then she'd have given him more than an ear-bending if he ever came back for a visit... "I can only hope our friends made it out as well..." The occasional rumble could still be heard off in the distance and the Diviner would glance away at the thought before composing himself as best he could,

"The important thing is what we're going to do now..." With everything that had happened - and what was no doubt still happening back in the City, it seemed as though the pair would have little option but to spend the night within the forest... "The sun's going to go down soon enough...but if we light a fire, it could attract the attention of those..." He trailed off, they weren't people and Patrick refused to accept that beings who set out to kill without a care were anything more than monsters...

"Here." Sliding off his own cloak, Patrick would wrap it around the Celebrar's shoulders, taking care to fasten the toggle so Reese didn't have to worry, "It could use a good clean, but I'd rather you had it - I don't know how cold it's going to get around here, but I'm used to chilly nights, so I'll be fine," he lifted his gaze towards the clearing again, scanning the area before running his fingers from her shoulder to her hand, "We had best move away from the river though, it gets even colder around water..." He wouldn't take no for an answer regarding giving Reese his cloak, but Patrick would wait until she was ready to move before leading her away from the water...

Reese
did her best to ignore the distant thuds that told of the ongoing action within the town and she'd look in the direction of the sound occasionally. The girl felt guilty that she'd gotten out with little more than scraped knees while most people with much better chances then her had fallen to the monsters, she started to get lost in thoughts of the entire event again when Patrick spoke, breaking her train of thought and bringing her back to where she was now. Reese nodded in agreement, feeling slightly relieved at the notion that a fire was a bad idea but knowing that she'd be entirely useless without a source of light.

"Oh, Patrick you don't need to, it's gonna be really cold," she said, assuming her protests would be useless as he'd fixed the cloak around her shoulders. She was thankful for the added warmth, but she couldn't help but feel bad, Patrick had already done so much to help her and what could she do in return other than thank him? The blond girl took his hand and followed closely.

With the awareness that Eoana's Forest was still out of bounds to staff and students alike, Patrick couldn't help but wonder what punishments would face them when they found their way back - if they weren't rescued beforehand... but seeing as though it was his fault they ended up in that situation, the Diviner had resolved himself to taking the full responsibility - and as they now moved even deeper into the forest, it would seem that perhaps his choice to do so may very well have saved their lives...

That was provided the horrors of the forest didn't get to them? There had to be a reason it was a restricted area and it did look likely that they were staying the night there...

"I'll be fine," he would smile reassuringly as Reese protested to wearing his cloak, sure, with just a not-so-green shirt and a vest he could already feel the chill prickling the skin on his arms, but with the shock they'd both endured, he knew she needed it more than him.

Growing more aware now that as someone who appeared to rely on the light around her to see, Reese would be perhaps almost blind as the light faded, Patrick would try his best to maintain a hold of her hand - if he had been in her situation, he could only imagine now uncomfortable it could be putting all his trust in another to lead him somewhere safe... He had to admit, the visibility wasn't going to be fantastic for him either as the sun set, but that was why he had to try and find somewhere safe before they were both...

"~Kraark~"

His heart leapt at the sound and the Diviner would turn his head this way and that in the hopes of pinpointing that wonderful sound... "...Bran?" It came again and he looked towards Reese, "This way," he wasn't certain if she could hear the joy and relief in his voice, but his pace would quicken ever so slightly before they stepped out into another clearing and his eyes fell on a beautiful sight that even perhaps brought a tear to his eye, "You're back!" It was hard to keep his voice low, but once again keeping a hold of the Celebrar's hand, Patrick would approach the thicket upon which the White Raven sat in all her splendour.

"What you do?" it was clear the Bird had flown over the devastation that had been the festival - no doubt looking for scraps to fill her ever-ravenous hunger - but even after all that, it seemed as though she was trying to be funny? Could birds express humour?

"Hello to you too, Beautiful Bird," Patrick would beam, holding up a hand to invite the Raven down, having missed her dearly, he couldn't wait to hold her close again,

"No. Keep Watch," her tone was as sharp and as croaky as ever, but she would hop back a little from his outstretched hand, refusing to advance as though she knew it was imperative they remained apart just that little longer...

He had to admit, he was a little disappointed, but having known the Raven for a fair few years now, he knew it was best that they left her to keep guard as she seemed to insist... "Okay grumpy-guts," he would have stuck out his tongue, feeling quite elated that his friend had returned, but instead turned his attention back to Reese, "Sorry, she's an old friend - and the reason why we're wandering the forest now..." he felt a little guilty, but knew with the Raven on watch, they were safe - at least until she saw something delectable to eat...

"If you don't mind, perhaps it's best we get settled for the night? We don't know how long it'll take before the guards start searching for survivors..." he hated saying that, but it would seem that was the reality of it...

Leading the Celebrar closer to the thicket upon which Branwen now sat, Patrick would offer Reese the opportunity to sit before joining her - not so close that it would be strange, but enough that she was aware he wasn't going to leave her side - they were still technically in danger and if she wished, he would allow Reese to continue to hold his hand for as long as she needed.

Reese
followed closely for the most part, she was beyond thankful that Patrick held her hand to guide her through the forest and while she stumbled every so often she was much better off than had she been walking on her own. The girl continued to follow as he gave a response that she'd almost expected from the kind boy, "Are you sure? it's getting really cold," she said, feeling a slight panic about staying in a darkened forest over night. She was about to protest more when the sound of a bird rang through the air followed by Patrick's voice sounding different than she had hear in most of their interactions thus far. He sounded almost excited? Reese started to ask "Bran?" but the diviner boy had ushered forward, his pace quickening some.

The blond girl couldn't help but smile at the giddiness that seemed to pour off of Patrick, he was speaking to a bird from what she'd gathered and while it was mildly unusual, she'd seen much stranger things. Reese shook her head some at the boy's apology and smiled lightly at him, "No it's fine, wh-who is she?" she asked curiously, thankful for the change in tone that the bird had brought, but when Patrick spoke of the search for survivors she felt uncomfortable once more, as though a great weight sat atop her chest.

Reese sat with no protest and as Patrick sat beside her she felt a strange sense of calm. She continued to hold his hand and as the two sat she realized that, while there were some distractions that had taken her mind off of the event for the most part, her hands were shaking ever so slightly. The girl let out a soft sigh then as though to calm herself as she drew her knees to her chest again and let her chin rest atop her knees. She closed her eyes and thought for a moment of a topic, something they could discuss so that she herself would not unravel, "Um..." she started and turned some to face the diviner as the sunlight began to dim, "You seem to know your way about the forest pretty well," she acknowledged, but knew that his expertise could probably be lent to his ability to see, "Do you camp a lot?" she asked. She felt silly and a little like she was prying, but she needed some sort of a distraction from her own thoughts.

"I'm good, honest," - Technically that was a bit of a white lie, but Patrick didn't want Reese to worry, as he'd mentioned before, the Diviner had spent nights out in the cold back when he'd been traveling Valor's coastline, so he really should be used to it by now - and if anything, it helped to remind him he was still alive and it shouldn't be for more than one night...right?

"I'm not sure how well you could make out her plumage in the low light, but Branwen is a White Raven and we've been friends for as long as I can remember," he would smile, recalling to the Celebrar briefly how he'd found the bird as a chick whilst he'd been wandering the coastline alone - sometimes his cousins proved to be a little too much for him and he often liked to wander off on his own when the caravans came to rest for a while. He didn't go into much detail, but it had been through nursing her back to health with the help of his family that had allowed them to form an almost inseparable bond.

As they sat, Patrick's thumb would gently brush across the back of Reese's hand - it had been something his Grandmother had done when she was still alive and he hoped the Celebrar might find it as soothing/relaxing as he had... He wasn't numb to the fact that Reese was shaking, either through cold, or shock of what was still very fresh in their minds, but he could only hope it helped calm her slightly?

As she broke the silence with her question, Patrick would tilt his head slightly in her direction - his gaze remaining on the world around them, but he did it purely to acknowledge that he was listening, "I'm actually from a family of travelers," he could never know anyone's true opinions of those who never remained in one location for long, but having pretty much been all he'd known growing up, it was a way of life. "We live in these little Caravans and travel with the seasons," Although she might not have been able to see, Patrick would make a shape with his free hand before telling how his Grandfa had followed the same route ever since he was a lad, retracing the steps of his own parents - and theirs before them...

"I'm originally from Langfrey, so forests have always been a part of my life, but we've been all over Valor, even right the way up through the Mountain range by Mistun! We tend to travel for a long while, pitching up a short walk from the settlements - then my uncles make the journey in to offer their assistance and gather supplies - but we also hunt and gather from the seas and forests," Patrick could only hope he wasn't boring her to death with his tales, but if he was honest, reminiscing about his family certainly helped to take his mind off of things, "The best part is hearing tales around the campfire or sleeping under the stars..." hopefully he'd managed to answer her question within his story, but his gaze would stare off at nothing as fond memories flooded his mind...

Reese
didn't believe him, while the diviner insisted he would be fine, the cold air continued to get colder as the chill of sunset began to set in. Reese closed her eyes as she listened to Patrick explaining his friend, Branwen, she'd heard the name before and knew it meant something along the lines of pretty bird, but as the boy continued to describe the bird Reese smiled, a white raven, what a lovely idea. And as he went on to describe his past with the wonderful bird Reese listened in silence, grateful for the distraction from her own thoughts.

Patrick was well into explaining his travels around the island and such by the time Reese realized that the boys thumb was brushing back and forth against her the back of her own hand. She found the gesture soothing, remembering a time when she had relied entirely on touch to do anything. She let Patrick continue to brush her hand and while she didn't address it, she was thankful for the gesture whether it was intentional or simply a habit of his.
When Patrick trailed off the blond girl opened her eyes as if to look towards him, and while she looked in his direction his figure was almost indistinguishable from the surrounding trees and shadows. For a moment Reese debated asking if he were alright, but he had been speaking as though about something he enjoyed, perhaps he was reminiscing. She allowed the diviner his silence, and looked away towards where she had heard the raven, Branwen, she allowed herself to imagine for a bit what a white raven would look like, and when she was unable to picture it in her mind she closed her eyes again, wondering what it must have been like to wander about all ones life. It seemed strange, different from the normal lifestyle of those she'd met coming in and out of her family's shop.

Patrick hadn't realised he'd fallen silent, infact, it was because of this quiet contemplation that he found himself slipping into a more relaxed state of mind... Remembering times when his family had set up by the sea, falling asleep to the soft hush of the rolling waves as they ebbed and flowed across the shale coastline whilst the birds wheeled in the sky overhead... With such calming thoughts blessing his mind, it wouldn't take long before his eyelids would begin to droop as his breathing slowed to a more restful pace...

He'd promised himself that he would stay awake - his intention to keep watch over Reese if she chose to catch a few minutes for herself, but as the time passed and the world continued to darken around them, a mixture of sheer exhaustion, fond memories and perhaps the sound of the breeze as it drifted through the trees above them just seemed to pile up into one inevitable result...

The first time his head had drooped the Diviner had jolted awake - the sight of the strange location around him momentarily throwing up questions which left him tense until he remembered just why they were out there... After that, he would breathe a sigh and calm himself - there was still that need to be discreet and so a fire was once again out of the question...instead his gaze would drift towards the Celebrar. If her hand was still in his, Patrick's thumb would once again begin running gently across the back of her hand as he turned his attention towards where Branwen was hopefully still roosting...

There was no telling what the time was and so he set his mind to other things, thinking forward to perhaps what they would do when the light returned, whether they'd rise with the sun and make their way back towards the Academy, or perhaps linger a little longer - just to be safe...? In hindsight, it might have been worth keeping his own cloak, but with the side closest to Reese feeling pleasantly warm he decided it best to remain where he was... Eventually, the need to rest would once again creep back over his consciousness and as his thoughts drifted back to home, he would soon slip back into sleep.

There
was a long silence before Reese realized that Patrick must have dozed off. She looking in his direction as though it would help her, but as she listened it indeed sounded like the diviner was sleeping. Carefully Reese used her free hand to untie Patrick's coat, she found it to be extremely frustrating though and it took several minutes before she finally got it undone. She was carefully to try not to wake him and waved her hands about gently to find where his shoulder opposite her was before draping the coat over the diviner like a blanket in hopes that it would add a little more warmth.

The blond girl then tucked her legs into her own coat, thankful that it was slightly to long for herself. Reese wouldn't fall asleep quickly, and most of her night was spent trying to distract herself from what had transpired throughout the day. Eventually though the girl started to doze off against her best efforts to stay awake.

Eoana City Guard || Aldaine De'Fraye
[Where:] Eoana Forest [With:] No one [Feeling:] Focused [Outfit:] Cloaked light armour, unmasked
[OOC:]
โ•”โ•โ•โ•โ•โ•โ•โ•โ•โ•โ•โ•โ•โ•โ•โ•โ•โ•โ•โ•

The forest was quiet, serene in a sense, if you could managed to ignore that tragedies that occurred there as of late. However, Aldaine felt oddly at piece with the lack of noise and commotion that the city provided. Perhaps he was glad that he was finally putting his plans into action or it could have been that he had just longed for silence, as opposed to the listening to simply witnessing the slow recovery of the city. Some might have called that man obsessed, but, he simply couldnโ€™t get the day of the attack out of his head. He couldnโ€™t get any of it out of his head. It was as though all those dark memories, and the dark thoughts that accompanied them, were permanently engraved into his mind. Amidst his thinking, his mind wandered back to the previous day, to the conversation he and Cyrus had in the corridor. The second lieutenant was the third person Aldaine had shown weakness in front of nowโ€ฆrevealing his inner torment. Aldaine was not sure why he had chosen to be open with Cyrus, perhaps there was still some naรฏve part of him that thought confessing his demons would help to ease them.

    โ€ฆBut it didnโ€™tโ€ฆ

However, the tiger did give Aldaine much more to think about and consider. True, Aldaine had withheld the extremist plot for fear it would plunge the fragile peace between Valor and Trendel into chaos once more, however, the more the jaguar considered Cyrusโ€™ words, the more they seemed to make sense. Realistically speaking, what was to stop the extremists from attacking Eoana? And even if Aldaine had spoken of the plot to the council, could they even have prepared for such an attack? Aldaine knew his father, and to an extent, he wouldnโ€™t have been surprised if Arthur had found a way of smuggling the extremists in, and of course, even if he was suspected, the head of the Deโ€™Fraye house was skilled, he could very well have covered up any evidence that would incriminate him, he was that kind of man. Yet, even in pondering this, Aldaine still couldnโ€™t shake the feeling that he still held a portion of the blame. Then again, it didnโ€™t really matterโ€ฆnot now. Whatโ€™s done is done and there was nothing Aldaine could do to re-write it.

A strong whiff of the peculiar scent he had been following brought Aldaine out of his inner considerations. He had managed to find tracks that lead him deep into the forest. Kneeling down, he examined the trodden path in front of him. They were footprints, judging by the quantity, there was at most 5 or 6 in the group that attacked that recent caravan. What is more, there seemed to be a dampened trail of black powder, leading to a small torn bag on the ground. Aldaine had recognised it near instantly. It was the same powder that was used in the explosives during the attack. It played a pivotal role in aiding Aldaine in his search, as he had managed to pick up the scent at the sight of one of the recently attacked caravans. Picking up the small bag, with whatever of the powder was left in it, Aldaine examined it. By the looks of it, the bag had only been dropped recently, the material was still in fine condition, bar the tear and the dampness due to the weather. He was lucky the snow wasnโ€™t heavy today, otherwise tracking the attackers would have been a lot more tedious. Standing up, Aldaine looked around the surrounding local. Amidst the variety of scents, his keen nose caught the metallic scent of blood. Following it, he came to a branch, where there was a small splatter of blood and a torn piece of black cloth. This then lead to a smidgen of the black powder on the branch below, no doubt where the bag was torn. It seemed one of the attackers was careless and ran into a tree. But of course, this was fortunate for Aldaine, for now he not only had one strong scent to track, but two, should the other dissipate in time. Looking ahead, Aldaine pressed on as he noticed that small spots of red, tainting the forest frost-clad floor.

Aldaine was careful with each passing step he took as he journeyed deeper into the forest. After he passed a few more trees, he drew his dagger from his hip and carved an โ€œXโ€ into a nearby tree. โ€œThat makes 21โ€ the shifter spoke quietly as he sheathed the well-sharpened steel. Aldaine had decided it was the best course of action to mark one tree for every 20 steps he took so he would have a trailed to follow back. The last thing he wanted was to get lost in a forest such as this one. He still hadnโ€™t forgot that there was more than just the extremists out here. There was still the couple suspected of murder, the couple no one had any clues or potential identities of. The fact had never escaped the shifter, but at the same time, he could let nothing sway him. There was no guarantee that the trail he pursued would lead him to the extremists, but, it would bound to lead him somewhere. Still, he pressed on so as to see if his efforts would bare future fruit. As much as he hated it, he had to admit, Cyrus was right. Pursuing the task alone was just a tad inconvenient.

โ€ฆProvided he got back to the city in one piece, if at all, it may not hurt to get a few extra hands to aid him in his endeavoursโ€ฆ

โ•”โ•โ•โ•โ•โ•โ•โ•โ•โ•โ•โ•โ•โ•โ•โ•โ•โ•โ•โ•

Aldaine had still managed to follow the blood trail he found from earlier. The wound must have been deep, as he had been following the small red blotches for at least 20 to 25 minutes. Whoever. โ€œMustโ€™ve hurt.โ€ Aldaine stated bluntly. The only thing he had to connect the attacks of the caravan to the extremists was the black powder he found earlier. That being the case, if this trail did lead him to the extremists, theyโ€™d have more than just a small flesh wound to deal withโ€ฆ

In another few steps, Aldaine was about to take a short break, after all, he hadnโ€™t rested since he entered the forest. However, he had begun to approach a clearing where there seemed to be some sort of camp established. Quickly taking cover behind a nearby tree, Aldaine steadied himself. Slowly drawing his sword and taking a breath, he peered out from where he hid to get a better view of the camps current condition. Oddly, from what he could see, the camp was deserted with no sign of life about it. Stepping out, the jaguar carefully approached the site.

As he made his way in, he noticed that the wood where the campfire would have been ignited had recently began to rot. His gaze travelling along the ground and towards the tent, he noticed bloodstains, as well as large tears in the tentโ€™s material. By the looks of it, there seemed to have been a fight. As he scoured the locale, Aldaine noticed that there were only three small tents erected, hardly enough to house the large group that had managed to flee the city. His train of thought was interrupted as he felt himself stand on something soft and squishy. Looking down, he noticed a small stuffed toy bear, damp and tainted in soot. Aldaineโ€™s gaze soon darkened into a cold state. Amidst the scents he had discovered upon entering the camp, he noticed one particularly foul stench, a stench that he could now confirm was emerging from the tentโ€ฆ

Kneeling down, Aldaine picked up the toy and gave it a look over. Sighing, he stood up approached the tent it was closest too. As he drew closer, he could see the masses of flies that that converged on the makeshift shelters. He didnโ€™t need to draw back the tents entrance to know what lay inside. Judging by the state of the camp, a large group came, attacked and killed the inhabitants of the camp, making off with theyโ€™re supplies. Aldaine sighed once moreโ€ฆhow many more had to die? Was all of this truly worth it to them? To him? Was killing men, women, children really going to create a better future for Trendel? Rubbing his eyes, Aldaine spoke quietly to himself, โ€œWhat made you like this? How did you become so cruel...fatherโ€ฆ?โ€ No matter how hard he tried to deny it, there still remained a part of Aldaine that wanted to believe that this was all some ******** up dream. That heโ€™d wake up in his home back in Trendel in his warm bed, with his lovely Jenna and all would be well. Butโ€ฆsuch was not the case. This was real, Arthurโ€™s betrayal was real and Aldaine had to pick up the piece of the peace his father had shattered. Aldaine found himself facetiously laughing to himself as he spoke once more, his voice barely above a whisperโ€ฆ โ€œHmphโ€ฆthe โ€˜Sins of the fatherโ€™โ€ฆโ€ Aldaine knew all too well that his life was forever changed. He knew that never again would he be the same. Regardless, whatever twists or turns his husk of a life took from now until he resigned to the grave, heโ€™d be damned if he didnโ€™t give the extremists exactly what they deservedโ€ฆ

It was then Aldaineโ€™s ears perked up as he detected a light breathing coming from the far side of the camp. There, he noticed a small pile of damaged crates amongst other rubbish. Approaching cautiously, keeping a hand at his hip, he grew closer and closer. As he neared the pile of debris, he could make out what sounded like a scared sniffling and whimpering. Kneeling down, he braced himself as he quickly pulled back a damaged crate to reveal the source of the noise. Needless to say, the sight before Aldaine nearly made him freezeโ€ฆ

The jaguar found himself staring at a small pale, malnourished, half-shaken shifter girl, maybe 10 or 11 years old. She sat curled, arms hugging her knees to her chest, here clothes torn and covered in soot and ash, arms and legs red, eyes bloodshot, all with a small pair of black feline ears against short black hair. She sat there, as if in shock as the two simply stared at each other. Shaking himself out of his own shock that someone in the camp had somehow survived, he brought himself back to reality and to the situation at hand. Sitting himself on both knees, Aldaine held his hands up slowly, noticing how the child flinched in fear as he did so. To this, Aldaine brought a finger to his lips and spoke quietly, โ€œShhโ€ฆdonโ€™t make make a sound. Iโ€™m not going to hurt you.โ€ Much to his relief the girl slowly nodded her head. Relaxing a bit, Aldaine continued, though he noticed that the girl was still shaking, โ€œYou donโ€™t need to be afraid. I wonโ€™t hurt you. Can you tell me what happened here? Whatโ€™s your name?โ€ Aldaine asked softly. The situation had now become โ€œdelicateโ€ for lack of a better word. He needed to be careful, one wrong move and the girl could easily panic and try to feel, which may attract to unwanted attentions, should any of the extremists be nearby the vicinity of the camp. As a security measure, Aldaine made sure to keep his eyes and ears sharp to pick up and suspicious sights or sounds just in case. Looking back at the girl, she began to answer โ€œS-Sarahโ€ฆe-e-everyoneโ€™s deadโ€ฆโ€ It was a bad situation, but Aldaine was relieved she had answered. Releasing a calm sigh, he replied, โ€œMy name is Aldaine. who did this Sarah? Can you tell me what they looked like?โ€ he inquired further. He spoke slowly so as not to overwhelm her, after all, this girl had been out here for gods knows how long, clearly without food and water. Sarah replied again โ€œB-Bad people cameโ€ฆtheyโ€ฆhad hoodsโ€ฆI couldnโ€™t see their facesโ€ฆd-daddy t-told me t-to hideโ€ฆt-they were scaryโ€ฆโ€ they young shifter cub spoke, sniffling and with a hoarse voice. It seems she may also have caught a cold or worse. Aldaine hushed her again as he spoke โ€œThey are scaryโ€ฆโ€ Aldaine paused for a moment. This certainly put a change in things. Hunting the extremists was one thing, but he couldnโ€™t just leave this girl out here. She had to have had somewhere on the island she could stay, perhaps some other family member who lived in the city? Aldaine continued, โ€œTell me Sarahโ€ฆdo you have any other family on the island, in the city perhaps?โ€ At this, he noticed the girl shy away from him slightly. All in all, Aldaineโ€™s choice of attire probably didnโ€™t help matters. Sighing, he took off his cloak and moved closer to wrap it around her. When he noticed her try to move away from him, he spoke once more, maintaining a soft tone โ€œYouโ€™re cold. You need to keep warm otherwise youโ€™ll freeze. We donโ€™t want that now do we?โ€ At this Sarah shook her head. Hence, she allowed Aldaine to wrap the cloak around, though she squinted her eyes as she still feared for the worst. Aldaine made sure to keep his movements slow so as not to startle her. The cloak may not have been much, but it should protect her from the cold in the meantime. Opening a pouch he kept on his hip, Aldaine took on a leather flask of water, and instructed Sarah to drink some. โ€œSmall sips now.โ€ he spoke, not what the girl to over-exert herself. When someone was malnourished, it was pivotal that they didnโ€™t use too much of their energy while eating and drinking. Aldaine had dealt with his fair share of instances like this in the past during the war, some of which heโ€™d rather forget. Once she had had a drink, Aldaine broke a very small piece off of the half-loaf of bread he had and instructed Sarah not to eat it all in the one go, but rather to take small, measured bits.

Once the air between the two had calmed, Aldaine addressed the youngling again, โ€œListen Sarah, we canโ€™t stay out here. Itโ€™s dangerous. So, how about I take you back to the city?โ€ Sarah, pulling the cloak around her more, spoke again โ€œI-I want to see auntieโ€ฆโ€ Aldaine inquired further โ€œAnd where is โ€˜auntieโ€™? The city?โ€ Sarah nodded her head. To this, Aldaine slowly extended his arm to Sarah, โ€œYou can trust me, Iโ€™m a City Guard. How about I take you back to the city, then you can go and see your auntie, hmm?โ€ Aldaine did his best to earn her trust. However, he notice her sway and lunged forward just in time to stop her hitting the cold hard ground.

Taking the shifter cub into his arms, he pulled his glove off with his teeth and put his palm to her forehead. She may as well have been boiling hot. It seemed she had a fever. Time was now even more of the essence. The cub needed medical attention as soon as possible. Readjusting his cloak so Sarah was nicely hopped up to protect her from the cold, Aldaine made his way back to the entrance of the forest. In a sense, he was fortunate she had passed out. In made getting her hack to the city easier, though that still didnโ€™t make it a good thing. The sooner they returned to the city to get the girl proper medical aid, the better.

Hunting the extremists could wait another time. For one, he knew that they were operating in the forest, so he wasnโ€™t leaving completely empty-handed in terms of his investigation. However, guaranteeing the safety of citizens was his duty as a guard and the weakened girl in his arms took priority right now.

Although initially a little frustrated at being followed and having to spend a little time explaining his reasons for his swift exit from the Barracks, Cyrus was glad to have the Jaguar by his side and even moreso when he understood the need for haste, "I may have gained rank, but there's no need to refer to me by that title all the time," He smirked, obviously, when they were in the company of others it might make sense to remind them occasionally who they were in the presence of, but when it was just the two of them, his name would do fine...it felt strange otherwise as he was still getting used to the change...

With Aldaine at his flank, Cyrus would step beneath the shelter of the trees, grateful that the bracing wind was now broken up by the surrounding trunks and no longer casting fresh snow over the intruder's dwindling trails... Pausing for a moment, the Tiger's eyes would adjust to the change in light before scanning their surroundings for any kind of track they could pursue.

Initially, there were the dwindling snow-clad footsteps which faded with each retreating step, but as the pair moved deeper into the forest, Cyrus started to wonder if they were tracking the man, or perhaps allowing themselves to stroll blindly into a trap...? "Al, what say you?" he kept walking, but slowed his pace a little - having already found several threads from the intruder's cloak and even more evidence to show the man had boldly trodden with little care to hide his tracks, the Tiger started to grow suspicious, "Don't you think these...signs are a little obvious?"

Having come so far it would prove a sheer waste of their time to just give up the hunt and turn back now, but drawing a hand back to check that his weapons were still secure, the Shifter would turn to his comrade to inquire to his own thoughts?

Cyrus comment on Aldaine referring to him by his official title went over the jaguarโ€™s head as he maintained his composure and focused on the task at hand. Letting Cyrus lead the way, the two made their way to Eoana forest. It was perhaps the on location Aldaine was already sick of seeing and hearing about, however, his personal feeling meant nothing in the face of the current situation. If an individual had infiltrated HQ, they had to be caught and taken in immediatelyโ€ฆ

    [Enters forest]

The two shifters, as unbelievable as it seemed given the weather, managed to follow the individualโ€™s trail thus far. However, something didnโ€™t feel right. By the way the trail was portrayedโ€ฆno steady-minded person who was trying to hide would ever leave such a clumsy, obvious rail to follow. The jaguar felt immediate unease at this. As they continued, the trail didnโ€™t change, in some instances, it began to feel more like it was purposefully left this way, but one could never be sure. This meant one of two things, either the individual they were following was a complete and total idiot or he or she was deliberately leading the two deeper into the forest. This reminded Aldaine too much of certain events that happened in his past in the warโ€ฆ

The jaguarโ€™s train of thought was interrupted as Cyrus inquired as to whether or not the signs seemedโ€ฆobvious. Gazing at Cyrus seriously he replied โ€œI know what you mean. Itโ€™s not a stretch to imagine. Iโ€™ve seen such tricks utilised before during my time in the Trendelonian military. New recruits fresh off the boat would fall for these kinds strategies all the time. Theyโ€™d going running right into an enemy ambush. We should be cautious continuing forward. Itโ€™s more than likely our little intruder could be leading us into a trap.โ€ Aldaine kept his hand at the ready to draw Shade from his back should the situation demand it.

    [ - Enter Eoana Forest - ]

He was well aware of how obvious his trail was and how foolish it would be for the two guards to follow him โ€“ but that was the point. Without risk there was no rewardโ€ฆIf the two were bold enough to follow him all the way to his destination, then they would come across something that wouldnโ€™t expect to find, something that they were both seeking. Keeping his gaze forward, he did less to make his train too obvious, but he made sure that both of the shifters were well behind him.

As he came closer and closer to his destination, he swung around, surveying the small camp before him โ€“ one of several he had found hidden around the island. There were piles of various supplies, some stored in boxes, others left out carelessly. Makeshift tents were erected against the trunks of thick trees, the canvas shivered in the wind. The circle of stones that usually hosted a fire to warm the area and cook by was put out. All the inhabitants of the camp were within the tents, waiting out the storm, huddled in for warmth. He couldnโ€™t say he blamed them, but then again, they deserved this fate after all theyโ€™d done to the City.

Once he was sure the two guards were near enough to at least make out the camp and its location, he grinned to himself, unsheathing one of the daggers heโ€™d taken from the Barrackโ€™s Armory. Moving quickly, slashed the ties that held the tents upright in the storm, effectively dropping the canvass in on its inhabitants. Shouts of alarm could be heard from those who laid inside, but he ignored them all. Catching sight of the Tiger and the Jaguar off in the distance be began to back away from the camp, effectively putting the camp between him and them. He kept his distance as to witness the battle and offer aid but only if entirely necessaryโ€ฆ
