He was able to reach for just one more before the tendrils finally receded back to the door. This time the memory was a little more vivid, a little more complete.

Memory
FAMILY:
“Come on!” Hands tugged at the loop of his jeans, pulling him by the belt into the crowd. “You promised you’d be my wingman tonight!” Not that his little sister ever had or ever would need a wingman; she was the kind of tempest that attracted men and women alike with the strange, arresting sort of self-confidence she exuded. Under the club’s blacklights her hair was illuminated like a bug in June and her makeup was as eccentric as she was.

Nowhere was she at home as in the middle of a pulsing rave and despite being her older brother [he] was always the one being pulled along in her relentless tide of energy. Somewhere he’d lost his shirt in the crowd and there were smears of some kind of body paint across his torso. His hair didn’t glow; it was dark, living shadow.

He was surprised when, instead of finding a dark nook where she would no doubt introduce him to tonight’s grenade he was going to have to jump on for her, they ended up outside. Beneath the dim streetlights on a humid Miami night he stared at his little sister as she pulled him towards the car. “What, no more party?”

They stopped then. “No. Just...wasn’t feelin’ it.” She wouldn’t look at him meaning that there was something she was hiding. Something that was weighing on her and he gave her a long, measuring look before slinging an arm around her shoulders.

“Well s**t. Lets hit up an IHOP and terrorize the wait staff.” Whatever it was could wait for later. If he wasn’t going to get feed his libido the least his sister could do for him was buy him some shitty pancakes.

He came away with the memory with a bright smile, glad to learn that he had a sister...somewhere, hopefully not here. He didn't have her name or anything, and he was curious about the next memory that maybe included her name and reasons for why she'd suddenly felt so down, but just knowing that he had family out there was comforting all on its own. He tucked that memory away just in time as the door suddenly spoke again, this time with a warning that brought on a creeping feeling of fear.

He glanced around at the others in the room, including the woman whose hand he was holding, wondering if it could possibly be one of them. Honestly it was a little hard to believe a door...

Seren stared at the door as well, clinging a little to Rhys' hand. Doors aren't supposed to change sizes, to grow huge. Ok, yes, this was a dream, but still, this was a far too real dream and she didn't like that at all. Nor did she like the sudden realization they were... somewhere. A building, an odd one. She didn't recognize the style, she'd never been in a building like this, or seen it, but... Wait. Her attention went back to the now very small door. Doors weren't supposed to shrink, either... or talk.

Wait, were doors supposed to talk? She wasn't sure, suddenly, because... she wasn't sure of anything. She clung to the hand she was holding, not sure who's hand, because she wasn't even sure who she was, so it was hard to guess anything. She tried to cling to her memories as they escaped... Love, she needed love, she was feeling love and a moment like she could see a face... before it was all gone.

The crystals all over caught her eye, the ones held by the tendrils. She stared at them... and managed to grab one, from nearby.

Quote:

ADMIRATION
He couldn’t see up onto the table, to admire the bright pigments and paints that science could explain but to his grandfather he’d only learned in an old stone masonry building miles away. His grandfather, hunched over a tiny wooden frame, holding a brush no bigger than his finger.
The man took the broken and made it new. Elio wondered if he was magic. (He was).

She... she had an amazing grandfather! One who did magical seeming work on art! She gave a happy sigh, and looked around, seeking another memory.

She snagged up the next crystal, one that wasn't too far from her. She hoped this would be another memory full of good things, like that last one!

Quote:

HOPELESSNESS:
He sat, slumped over and staring blankly at the dingy wall of the employee locker room at his latest job. Not a single acceptance letter. He'd done everything he could, working and training and studying himself practically to death...but just like that and his life felt like it was over before it ever really got started.

She felt her hand be squeezed, and her eyes closed shut for a moment, extremely grateful for whoever was holding her hand. She squeezed it back, hoping that the owner wasn't having a memory like this. Her life had fallen apart, and she had no chance, no hope at a good future, and remembering that was making her feel bleak now.

The ache inside of his chest expands outwards. He can feel the distance of it, the throb inside of himself, the sensation of being on the outside, away from everyone and anything else. There is nothing more out there for him, he knows this, sadness piling atop loneliness, and yet -

It eats at him.

Quote:
LONELINESS
"The weather's gorgeous, you really should come down," came the cheerful voice over the phone.

"Not soon," Rodney said. "Everything going okay with you?"

"Oh, it's great! Just great. Can't complain. You?"

Rodney held the phone a little more tightly. "It's okay," he said. "Any chance of you coming up?"

"With the move, everything's been sorta crazy."

Rodney listened a while, but the more he heard his voice, the further away he seemed.

She was desperate for something happier, with the weight of the hopelessness that last memory had left her with. She kept her hold on the hand in hers as she leaned over to grab just ONE more memory, before the tendrils seemed to flee.

Quote:

COMPLIANCE:
"Yes, yes, no more taking photos of people when they're sleeping, yes especially if I do not know them, yes even more so if someone paid me to do it, I completely understand, mother." She smiles in what she hopes is an appropriately contrite (and believable) way, and crosses her fingers behind her back. From the other room, her father gives her a particularly knowing look, and loads more film into her camera.

She wasn't sure how she felt about this one. It wasn't sad, and she was doing something to make her mother happy, which is good of course... While being encouraged to continue to misbehave by her father, which is also good. Parents should help their children grow into good, strong people, and they should encourage their children's interests, but it seemed as if she had a habit of inappropriate photography. She was very surprised at herself by this. Still, it was good to know that she had loving parents out there, somewhere.

She blinked and focused on the door, which was talking. Killed by someone here? She looked around at all the people, the man next to her holding her hand, and shivered some, afraid of the situation, but... she didn't let go. If he was the killer, she was too close to escape already. If he wasn't, well in this strange place where she had but three memories to her name... what was her name? She frowned, and then looked at the tall man next to her, and everyone around her, trying to think. Finally, she settled on something that she could accept, and nodded quietly.

He is alone.

He is alone, and his heart is aching, and he is afraid, so very, very afraid, a fear that creeps up his spine and chills his bones and makes him feel as though everything around him is out to get him. He is going to be devoured, he knows this; he is going to be lost -

He can still feel the fear.

Quote:
FEAR
"S-someone help me..." the child cried, sobbing as the shadows danced across the wall, the room engulfed in darkness. Tears streamed down his face as he held a teddy bear close, chilling voices taunting him, telling him what he already knew. No one was coming to help.
PostPosted: Wed Nov 01, 2017 6:48 pm

The strangeness of the dream, and the sureness that it was a dream, was something of a relief to Lucky. This was different from the usual kind of dreams he had - nightmares, to be more specific. It was only when the second door refused to open, that fear began to creep into even this imaginary respite.

REGRET:
Regret wasn't plummeting 30 feet from a helicopter. Regret wasn't even surviving plummeting 30 feet from a helicopter. Regret was plummeting 30 feet from a helicopter, and everyone seeing it happen.

PARANOIA: He didn't talk much any more. Not unless he had to.It wasn't just his imagination, he told himself. They knew. He could read between the lines, he saw it in the way people looked at him, any time he caught someone's gaze. To them, he was at best a joke, and at worst, a traitor.

DEFEAT: There was a sharp, stabbing pain through the chest. A serrated, thorny vine retracted back through his chest cavity, heart and all, and the presence standing over him seemed to be waiting impatiently for something. Time seemed to slow down, his own blood pooled around him - and then un-pooled, the wounds reversing until it was like he had never been killed. But with each refusal to give them what they were after, he was violently struck down again, and again, and --

The memories were unwelcome, but any attempt to leave was met with the same unwanted resistance. Gradually, he got the sense he was not alone in the dark room.

The memories were fading. They were fading little by little by little. Soon they would be gone, no more. They, them didn't know what to make of this. They closed their eyes shut and tryed to hold on to the memories. If only one then that would be good. Sometimes memories were all a person had. The memories fade and they are left with nothing but loneliness and a very, very small door. The door was had small as ones foot. Wasn't even big enough to go though. Then there was a voice. It was silent but still it's presence known. The voice was asking for help. Was asking for a way out. They looked around and schooled their head. The only way out was out of the one door and it was just too small.

The next minute the surrendings changed.

"A cabin?"

That's what it looked like.

They felt lingering thoughts but only three stood out.
Name
Possessession
Love.

Fading memory of a child being thrown in the air and being catch coming and going.

The voice spiked again Just time telling them to run. Slight fingers coming from under the small door.

If they could they would run. But they didn't really have anywhere to go.

First things first. Remembering who they were they knew they had a name. A memory started to come:

Quote:
LOVE: A face that tried to hide everything, but a slight smile. She watched him as he was talking and tried not to laugh, before leaping on his back and hugging him

That was the only thing they could remember.

When Gabby glanced over at the door it was gigantic, bigger than any door she'd ever seen before. But rather than her usual reaction of fascination she felt more threatened than anything...and yet something about the door just drew her in and soon enough the door was behind her and she found herself inside some weird, jigsaw-esque cabin. Nothing felt right about being in there, and yet again there she was. She was about to turn to Joy when something in or around the door, or perhaps the door itself, started talking. Once more stunned into silence, the girl blinked and listened and then everything she knew and remembered just faded to black.

Gone, all of it, and she blinked, expression now blank, at the tendrils that snaked out from beneath the door. Slowly they gathered crystals and, intrigued and concerned and worried and just curious she reached for one such crystal and relief poured over her for a moment. It was a memory. It was hers. It came back.

Memory
VICTORY:
He'd had a plan but it went out the window. He'd had a time frame to line up with his impending departure from the normal world but that also was discarded. He just couldn't do it anymore. Chris scrubbed the blood from his hands, smeared them on a towel, and tried to stop himself from crying. And laughing. And wheezing. He didn't know what to feel anymore but he was free.
He'd won.
And soon he'd be gone.

The relief drained from her face as she tried to piece together what she'd done. Whose blood was it? Why was she squelching all emotions down despite being on the brink or crying or laughing...why was it hard to breathe? That couldn't have been normal, yet she felt she'd won. She felt this was a good thing, a step in the right direction.

But what about the blood?

Hesitantly she reached for another crystal, desperate for another snippet of a memory but hoping it wouldn't be anything like the last one. She had to have more than one type of memory among all of these crystals here, after all. These were all hers, right? Would she be able to take them all back? As soon as the crystal was in her hand another memory surfaced.

Memory
ADMIRATION:
By the third week of class, all that [he] could focus on was just how green Thomas's eyes were. Philosophy, the siren that had drawn him into this particular class, was thrown to the wayside. Socrates had nothing on this teacher. The pit of his stomach fell out as he realized there was something fundamentally wrong with him -- but absolutely nothing wrong with eyes that green.

She was left with a bit of a lofty smile as she recalled such green eyes, a lovely and incredibly memorable shade she doubt she'd ever be able to forget. Though in the midst of the pleasantness she felt something was off...she focused on just the good for now.

She tucked that memory away and looked out at the expanse of crystals again, wondering if she could snag just one more.

Just one more crystal, she thought, and she managed to grab it just as the tendrils started to go back to the door. At least she had three memories, she thought with a lopsided frown, before the third and final memory came back to her.

Memory
DEFEAT:
There was a sharp, stabbing pain through the chest.

She shivered, fear gripping her at the idea of defeat and lying in her own pool of blood. Yet she was here so surely she'd made it out of there alive...somehow. Reluctantly she tucked that memory away as well, wondering who or what had filled her past with so much bloodshed. It felt so unnatural, the vines and the presence that seemed to be at the fore of this particular memory.

The door didn't help at all when it gave her a suspicious warning as the tendrils flocked back to it, and she was so tempted to believe it but she felt she was a see-to-believe type so she tried to keep the fear and nervousness at bay.

Glancing around though, at everyone there and taking note that not everyone was from Deus and there many, many unfamiliar faces, she had to wonder if the door was right.

She's still clutching to...whoever it is, trying to get them to stay. She needs people. She can't function without someone (anyone) there to prop her up. Unseen, one last hand (Limb? Tendril?) drifts up, and places one last crystal in her other hand.

Quote:
Anticipation

Here it was, this was it now if he would just hurry up....

"Come on, come on." He rocked back and forth on his heels, green eyes flicking to the watch on his wrist once, then twice. He just wanted to--

Almost there. Almost there. Just a fraction of a second more--

"What? What was I doing? What was it?"

Nothing is going right. What was it? Did she have a goal? Was she doing something important? Since when did she have green eyes? She squeezes her eyes shut, feeling a throbbing headache coming on.

Frustration faded, giving way to understanding and a patience that was just faintly eager. Dreams were nothing to fear. Alice would be here to help her - if not now, then soon enough, before anything became too much to bear. With a delicate touch, Mimsy pushed the door open, curious as ever.

Quote:
Compliance:
This behavior was irresponsible and unacceptable, and she knew better. She knew this, knew that she knew better, because her father told her so, voice terse and expression stern as he cleaned dirt and blood from her small hands. The cloth wasn't soft, nor was his touch, and it stung like sandpaper as she waited, quiet and patient. Obedient.

"Do you understand?" he asked of her, tone too calm.

"Yes, sir." She bowed her head and clasped her hands in front of her, posture straight and precise and as perfect as could be.

Quote:
Crush:
"Who are you making yours for?"

At the sound of her best friend's inquisitive voice, Mimsy realized that she had been staring. In the length of time that she'd known the other teenager, America had never seemed to mind being stared at, as if she felt that she deserved it.

Mimsy thought that she did.

"Um." She moved her hands away from the unfinished Valentine card and shifted in her seat, uncomfortable in her uncertainty. There was a fluttering in her chest, an abnormality. A sickness that didn't feel like one. "Am I allowed to give mine to you?"

Quote:
Goal:

The blade pressed through his skin too easily. She was stronger now, and needed to account for that, she reminded herself. Calculations drafted for humans had not applied to her for years - had not ever, if she let herself believe his insistence that she was always inhuman.

It was too easy, moving too quickly; she sat back onto her heels for a moment, staring down at the man on the floor, meeting his eyes when she never could manage before. There was still so much life left in them, defying the blood that ran over her hands, pooling around them.

"You are not my father any more, " she murmured, breath trembling as she leaned to push harder.
