This poem is from the sarcastic point of view of an overworked father, who never pays any attention to his one and only kid. It made my mom cry.

I’ll Love You That Day

No, no, not today, sweetheart. I’ve got work to do.
Emails, Phone calls, Minutemen meetings
I have to play my part!

No, no, not today, Honey. I’m too tired right now.
Take a nap, Watch TV, Then work some more
I have to make us money!

What you’re saying to me now, are these implied words

I’ll love you when I get the chance
Or when I have the time,
Between girlfriends, work, and naps;
I’ll love you tomorrow, maybe
But you know it’s the end of the quarter
And I’m just gonna snap!
I promise I’ll love you that day,
If traffic isn’t so bad
And I swear upon my grave
I don’t notice that you’re sad.

But this is what I need you to say when your words don’t mean a thing

I’ll love you right now, Darling! I’ve got all the time in the world!
My business life will have to wait
Cause you’re my little starling!
I’ll love you from now until forever
And from then much, much more
I’ll give you my entire heart
And could I hate you? Never!
I’ll tell you over and over again
That you’re the light of my life
My baby, my sunshine, my girl
I’ll shelter you from the rain.

And yet right now do you know what I hear?

No, no, not today, sweetheart. I have to make us money!
No, no, not today, honey.
I have to play my part!
And I’ll love you if I get the chance
Or if I have the time;
I promise I’ll love you that day,
My Darling,
I don’t know you’re sad.
