......“Afraid of what?”
......“Of the way the ice covers the windows, or how the cars struggle to break free from the snowbank. It reminds me of what has begun inside you. Of the process we take as we try to evade the inevitable.”
......“You needn’t speak in metaphors.”
......“But that’s all nature is. And are we not participating in it? Is it not the will of nature that swept into you? Surely, it’s not something we picked for ourselves.”
......“Maybe it is. Maybe somewhere, a long time ago, we said we could face this should it arrive on our doorstep. That this was a challenge we could participate in; back when we thought love could conquer all.”
......“It still can.”
......“Don’t be foolish, Noah. It’s been 42 years –”
......“– 53 years.”
......“It has been many, many, years and I still don’t see a flag waving in the wind at the top of our cliff. I only see the avalanche about to wipe us clean.”
......“It doesn’t have to be that way.”
......“Well, since nature’s involved, I doubt we have a choice.”
......At that we smiled; knowing I still had wit, and the ability to make you wish you had bitten your tongue.
......“Noah, even if at some point I forget you, just know that your essence is still there. It may be hidden too far down for either of us to see it, but it will exist. You will always remain inside of me; regardless of whether or not my organs fail to recognize you.”
......We drank from our mugs, and looked out onto the streets. Watching the people attempt to break free from the winter storm. To find a way out, and continue on their journey. I gazed at the trees and thought, that if your branches could be filled with the things I can no longer hold; then maybe we could find our burrow and sink into this winter frost.
