St Patricks Day

The St. Patrick's Day custom came to America in 1737. That was the first year St. Patrick's Day was publicly celebrated in this country, in Boston.

Today, people celebrate the day with parades, wearing of the green, and drinking beer. One reason St. Patrick's Day might have become so popular is that it takes place just a few days before the first day of spring. One might say it has become the first green of spring.

What do you know about this holiday?

If I'm remembering correctly, at the time Saint Patrick was considered a heretic. I just remember that he was not liked. Either by the church or by the people he was converting. I don't remember for sure.

I think this holiday is one of those rare exceptions in this country that it is acceptable to indulge in a stereotype. Someone said, "everyone's Irish on St. Patrick's Day." And as long as everybody sticks to drinking (green beer) and not the fighting, I have no problem with it.
