And then if you're trying to speak Chinese with blood-Chinese people.
They would either give you a weird dirty look
or they would enjoy talking to you.

It's cool that you want to learn the culture.
:]

It's like that with pretty much anything you try to learn new. Or like being a newb here on Gaia. You're always going to find rude people and nice people.

I think native-born Americans are worse about people not speaking English properly than anyone Asian I've met here in the US is about trying to use their language.

lol, I do hate the third tone. I found that listening to vocab on a mp3 player works pretty well though.

I hate the second tone, I don't get got to pronounce it for some reason :/

A lot of people in my class can't pronouce the "yuan", as in money. XDD I guess the "ΓΌ" is pretty special.

Apparently my Chinese pronounciation is very standard. I have fun listening to my friends who go to the crap Mandarin club in our school (so far all year they have only learnt "hello" "goodbye" and the numbers burning_eyes ) trying to pronounce Chinese. I asked one of them "have you learnt how to say goodbye yet?" and she replied "zhai zhain" (i think that is what it would sound like in pinyin, i don't think we have the "ain" sound in Mandarin?) then she must have seen the i-am-about-to-burst-out-laughing look on my face because then she goes "is that right?" And i'm just like "yeah." and ran off. blaugh

And in year seven the lower French group had a Mandarin lesson and one of them came back saying to me "your language is so cool!!!" and i was just staring dumbly at her going like "seriously?" sweatdrop
When she showed me what they had been learning I pulled over my cantonese friend and said "Isn't this stuff traditional Chinese?" I mean, the Mandarin teacher must be really off...

Yes omg omg I looooove the language, the history, the culture!
Nah I'm okay with non-Chinese learning our language, it just makes me feel kindof incompetent (because I don't learn French/Spanish and other foreign languages). LOL
