One of my friends who is a piano major had an audition to get into the music program at Florida State this last Saturday. His lung actually collapsed during his audition, but he kept going. He drove himself home from FSU in Tallahassee which is a good 2 hour drive from where we are and went to the hospital. Hes ok now, he just needs time to recover.

Apparently the audition went really well too.

He called our teacher during class from the hospital, and our music teacher said "your one lucky son of a *****, you know the mileage you'll have by being able to say you auditioned for college on a collapsed lung?!?!"

I cant imagine what I would do if that happened to me, especially since I play oboe. I probably would quickly become incapable of playing it.

Just thought I would share his audition story. It's pretty amazing. Hope he gets in.

This is one really curious story.
Actually, I do not know how it feels to have one lung failure but, either way, it does sound like one needs determination and self-control to carry on in spite of it.

Thanks for sharing this story, indeed.

I didnt know what it would feel like either. He was telling us he had a very sharp pain in his chest. He didnt realize that his lung had collapsed. He was breathing short fast breaths the whole time. He said he went out into the hall and threw up on the stairs. At first he thought he may have been just nervous. If he hadnt went to the hospital when he did it would have killed him. He waited dangerously too long to go as it was.

He is extremely extremely skinny, and somewhat tall. They said it was just a spontanious lung collapse, it can happen to tall lankey people.

I somehow thought it had happened like that. Thanks for the details.

I can't imagine why they wouldn't accept him!! There are plenty of decent players out there, but not all of them have the drive. I don't know what his performance level is, but even if its less than some of the others that auditioned, you KNOW he wants it and is willing to work his a** off for something, he's a good investment and I can't imagine anyone turning him down!!

This kid is awesome. He writes his own stuff, had his own cd's out. He definately going places. His name his very unique too. If you google his name he's the first thing you find.

This is a youtube video of him completely improvising on the piano backstage at school.

Wow, I'm glad he's okay. That really is dedication.

Musicians will do crazy things to finish a piece. A friend of mine was performing in a music festival and his E string broke (violinist), and he kept on playing. He finished the piece, improvising all the fingerings for his brand new three-stringed violin.
