4 is an absolutely perfect place to start the series.
If you're a gameplay guy, try 2, 5, 8 and 10, games with relatively weak stories but interesting mechanics to improve your characters
The others all having engaging stories and interesting level mechanics (except 1, but that's history so you should play it anyways.)
The Tactics series is worth your time if you're willing to put in 80 hours a game. xd

I've played every FF from 7-x-2 3,4, Mystic Quest, and am slowly getting into Crystal Chronicles But no, I havent played Final Fantasy before. cool Exactly that is the case. Silly Europeans always want to be right; they know nothing of sarcasm. NOTHING! My european wits are confuzzled. Did you play it or not? I didnt play 5. But that doesnt mean I've never played a FF Franchise game. xp I know. It was just an overhyped way of expressing that I prefer FF5 over other final fantasy games. You should play it. ninja
