Since I no longer have access to the EE, I've decided to dump my shiz here. I wrote a shitload of poems as I played Chrono Trigger DS, covering perspectives and insights from all eras to give my own little tribute to the game that has stood the test of time.

This thread contains spoilers; the poems are in chronological order along the storyline, so don't read too far ahead if you haven't beaten it yet (Which, given you've had since 1995, is just a tiny bit blasphemous).

To find a poem from the perspective of a certain character, use CTRL+F to search their name in brackets. [ex. (Crono). Obviously Crono has none, being silent and all.]

I hope you guys like it; it's not common Gallery fare, but I really have nowhere else to put it. confused

A Distant Promise (Marle)
storyline: Guardia Milennial Fair
My eyes fell right upon you
I had to make us meet
I knew I'd chosen right, when
You helped me to my feet
Your eyes weren't on my pendant
Your smile was so sincere
Your style screamed 'adventure'
You'd take me far from here
I want to share my secret
I'm scared and I'm ashamed
If you knew who I was, then
Would things turn out the same?
Pretend I'm after candy
I watch you with one eye
That silent smile changed me
I couldn't tell you why
I'd follow you forever
To know just where you go
I'll trust in you to find me
Where, even I don't know
We made a distant promise
You'll carry me away
On earth and in the heavens
We'll find our place someday

"Frog will suffice." (Frog)

storyline: Cathedral, 600 AD
In times of fallen heroes
I stand against the night
Your terrifying darkness
The reason I burn bright
Unknown to most the people
I fight on in his name
Protect the Queen from danger
Or stop the Fiendlord's game
I fight for I remember
The sire your scheming stole
For many lone Decembers
Your head has been my goal
I fight on in the memory
Of strength to stay his hand
The truest friend who changed me
From marshmallow to man
So bring your Fleas and Slashes
Bring cataclysms too
I'll stand for all that's righteous
For that's what he would do.

A Family Affair (Yakra)

storyline: Courtroom, 1000 AD
This man, I say, he stole our princess
Question me and pay the price
This king, I say, he sold our riches
Truce will feel my vengeance twice!
My grip on the land by the ear of my liege
The love of his family held in contempt
The glittering web of the lies that I weave
A grudge across ages, a promise I've kept
Alive in the shell of the weak and the ugly
We hide in the darkness and lie to the light
To feed upon only the strong and the lovely
To steal back their daytime and make it our night
In Yakra's name, I swear to usurp it
This man, I say, he's in my way
Revenge served cold is revenge served perfect
Off with his head, without delay!

Saving Grace (Robo)
storyline: Proto Dome 2300 AD
Good morning mistress, what do you demand?
Shall I sing, dance, or heal you, or harm on command?
Shall I make you forests from kingdoms of sand?
Shall I make you look twice at this old tin can?
For once in my life it's like I'm working straight
But something won't settle; why can't I relate
My brothers and sisters insulting my state
I lack something vital; the know-how to hate
I once fought for evil, they changed me for good
When no one was left, for our planet they stood
I'd spend my life thanking my friends if I could
I've seen so much more than alone, I ever would
So batter my body; you can't scrap a soul
There's something inside me that once was a hole
I'll follow this feeling wherever it goes
I'll live for the things that no heart of steel knows
I'll make you look once more at all robotkind
All thanks to the girl with the beautiful mind.

The Great Crossroads (Gaspar)

storyline: End of Time
Hold on there travellers, where are you going?
Don't try to answer, there's no way of knowing
Whether you're standing, or speeding or slowing
Come take a seat, your confusion is showing
For you've found your way to the end of all things
Here where no infant cries; here where no songbird sings
Here where I've no friends but pure magic beings
Yet distantly for me, that girl's Bell still rings
Think of me here as your guide on time's road
Come see me when you need to lighten the load
Ask when you feel that your progress has slowed
Or drop by to see all the friends that you've stowed
You can't change the future till you've changed the past
You face untold woe; treat each breath as your last
But get back on out there and show you've got spine
Our fates rest in your worthy hands; even mine.

Drunken Ramblings (Lucca)

storyline: 65,000,000 BC
We came for rocks, we stayed for fun
You only get one youth, you know
And though I'm not the pretty one
It could be fun to just let go
Forget life for a drink or two
And oh, the things you'll start to see!
And looking closely over you
You've never looked this good to me
So shut your mouth and spread your lips
It's time to dance and drink and sing
Forget your fears and watch my hips
You won't remember anything
Tomorrow we'll inform the world
We've never known that kind of love
But deep down, when you're with that girl
I'll be the one you're thinking of.

Ode to Cyrus (Frog)
storyline: 600 AD, Frog's hovel
Cyrus the fallen, the hero of Truce
None left but I who would dare fill your shoes
It should be I with the earth as my cage
Forgotten, forsaken, my soul in a rage
I am no Hero, but I am no fool
I'll do all I can to arrest Magus' rule
For sometimes I waver and sometimes I fear
But deep in my heart, you still have a place here
Helping me fight where another would fall
Teaching four feet of a man to stand tall
Pushing me on when the road shows no end
Even in death, you're my muse and my friend
Let me see through all your hopes and your dreams
Let me make music from the Fiendlord's screams
Guide my friends as we protect one another
While I fight on in the name of my brother.

Le Femme Fatale (Flea)

storyline: 600 AD, Magus' castle
The brat of the ball with the beautiful smile
I'll burn up your boxers in sensual style
In all of your hearts I'll instill foxy fear
Especially when you peek beneath my bustier!
I'll give you a spanking like you've never had
You don't have to curse me, I know that I'm bad
I'll rock you with great balls of passionate fire
You'll take to the grave that my looks are a liar
So step up Sir Froggy, and Sir Silence too
I'll make quiv'ring piles of men out of you
I'll make you fall head over hilt just for me;
You'll rue the day you stood against Diva Flea!

That ******** Frog (Magus)
storyline: 600 AD, Magus' castle
Survived the darkness, beat the odds
It's time to delve amongst the gods
You wrenched my world away from me
My sister, sweet and silently
It's time to swim against the tide
To fight the way I feel inside
But when I think I've pulled you in
That ******** frog turns up again!
Some friends in tow who show no fear
In that their last breath might be here
The Masamune, safe on their team
Reminds me with its Ruby gleam
A flashback to more fearful days
Against her will, my Schala prays
That ******** frog could ruin this all
He can't -- I've come too far to fall
A black hole in a backward glance
And through it, lies my second chance
That ******** frog will have to wait
I simply must rewrite my fate!

Planet of the Purged (Azala)
storyline: 65,000,000 BC
Pitiful apes, hail your cold-blooded queen
From core to the skies, I'll rule all in between
When into this planet that red star I steer
You fools will feel nothing but fury and fear
A plague for the people, a virulent veil
The scourge of a species predestined to fail
And though through the ages, it's all thanks to me
I'm sure that this sunset's the last one I'll see
But though I'm the first one to die at your hands
The luster of Lavos, the leveler of lands
Shall blossom below ground, the sinister flower
That plucks from this planet it one day will scour
So worship or fear it, fight if you desire;
But win or lose, you're only fanning the fire
For far in your future there's nothing but pain
Though victory's yours, all your vigil's in vain.

The Prophecy (Janus)

storyline: 12,000 BC
The black wind, it howls and it screams in my soul
I wish that I weren't too important to cry
The things I foresee are beyond my control
I don't know his name, but he's destined to die
They're not like the others, they seem kind of crude
Unwelcome enough in my halls and my mind
The blonde in the back, the one scanty and lewd
Should be on the ground with the rest of her kind
Would they stop my mother, or be on her side?
I fear that she'll ******** with the fabric of time
The black wind forewarns me of hell and high tides
They'll spirit away my poor soul from my spine
The fate of this nation in self-serving hands
So desperate for change, I'm relying on them
The black wind foretells a devouring of lands
From now to forever, this world is condemned

Immaculate Sacrifice (Schala)

Storyline: 12,000 BC
This resonance; raw strength is all that I feel
The stone of dreams both raised and submerged our Zeal
It emanates evil beyond all I know
I beg for its beckon to stop or to slow
This pulsating power throughout my body
For eternal life, sucks the soul out of me
Did I misplace my faith in those Janus foretold?
The brains, and the brawn, and the belles, and the the bold?
I can't conceive I could just gamble the world
On this stoic silent stranger and soft-hearted girl
Perhaps if I stay, she will listen to sense
Don't be afraid, brother, I'm doing my best
I'll stay by her side for it's all that I've known
Forever with Lavos, forever alone.

A Dream Devoured (Marle)
storyline: Hall of the Mammon Machine
I wish that you weren't so dissuaded from me
Wish you were beneath my control
My unhappy angel, my dark deity
You can't hide your disjointed soul
The smiles you showed me to right every wrong
No longer seem warm and sincere
You know you can't make me, I've loved you too long
I won't tear you harshly from here
The colours wash off you as quick as they came
You hold me in one graying arm
I know I can't stop you, it won't be the same
This time, I can't save you from harm
And plastic crusts over your lips as we kiss
Synthetic, you're slipping away
I'm so sorry I can't defend you from this
We knew it would come to this day
Hold fast to your hands as they melt into me
Breathe deeply and savour the pain
Your tongue pressed to mine, let the future fly free
No stories, no secrets remain
I cry as you choke on your soft, staggered breath
You throw your dreams far from my own
I beg you, don't do it, I'll have nothing left
My life, please don't leave me alone
I'll one day forget you, you say through a sigh
And turn to face what we both fear
And nothing I do will ensure you and I
Your silent scream all that I hear
You've left me forever, your body burnt black
Regret forming rash action's base
Pursuing the part I can never get back
With deeds I can never erase.

The Morning After (Lucca)

storyline: Surviving Village 12,000 BC
To wake from a nightmare that wasn't a dream
That kid was a brother to me
It's more than enough to make me want to scream
Or even just show sympathy
I took him for granted, I acted too slow
I always thought he'd be around
The forever friendship I thought I would know
Now naught but this necklace they found
The looks on their faces are frightening scenes;
They know it as well as do I
How can we face Lavos when we know it means
We're doomed to watch each other die?
We've got to keep fighting, we just can't go on
Just dwelling on changing the past
For each day there's nightfall, for each dusk there's dawn
Life's flame's not a thing meant to last
If only we could, if only dreams came true
Will fate let me see you again?
I'd go to the ends of the earth to save you
If only dreams came true, dear friend.

The Black Omen (Queen Zeal)
storyline: rise of the Black Omen
I've finally found life eternal alone
Its cold pulsing red river rushes through me
To watch Lavos' world from this black iron throne
And to wait for the day he will wrench himself free
Transcending all time, I float high in the sky
The world's only witness, the entity's bane
They know that I'm here, but they don't question why
Such a threatening castle could be found mundane
Those fools on the ground fodder fattening up
Like lambs to the slaughter, they cluelessly go
Till in acid hellfire their world will erupt
And from the ground, great green spiked shells start to grow
From era to era, my beauty will stand
With dark gothic grandeur beyond dreams of Zeal
Safe up in the sky from the laws of the land
From the eras to come, the souls Lavos will steal
Fourteen thousand years till I watch the world end
Perfection itself will rain down from the skies
With cold crimson glory my sole silent friend
My dark angel, Lavos, let me be your eyes.

Requiem of the Singing Mountain (Marle)

storyline: Death Peak
I'm so glad you brought me along for the ride
But I can't change the past without you by my side
And nothing is real here, there's nothing but snow
I'm caught in December with no place to go
Through cold blowing winds, over footpaths of ice
The only warmth, hope that our prayers will suffice
Tears freeze on my cheeks as we trek further on
It's still so hard just to believe that you're gone
Our promise now cold as this desolate peak;
Who knows if this egg holds the ending I seek?
I'll fight anyway 'cause hope's all I have left
Do I climb to salvation, or to my own death?
I don't really care, this is all that rings true:
There's no future for me if it isn't with you.

My Green Dream (Fiona)

storyline: 600 AD
Somewhere far and somewhere distant
There's a meadow calling me
How in desolate times I've missed it
How I've longed for just one tree
Gales would rustle through the branches
Soft sweet music to my ears
Yet all the wind this wasteland catches
Drives dry dirt into my tears
How I'd toil for all my lifespan
How I'd fight the tides of fate
Saving the forest however I can
Though I fear it's far too late
How I pine for perfect pastures
How I long for glades of green
Won't someone help me find what I'm after?
Won't someone grant my viridian dream?

Toma's Spirits (Toma)

storyline: 1000 AD, Choras
Four hundred years past my life came to an end
In chase of a shell said to shine like the sky
My last drink I left in the hands of a friend
Pray, grant me my wish, and pray, do not ask why
For if I can't have it, then somebody should
For if I can't find it, then somebody must
My faraway friends, I believe that they could
If they share my calling as a wanderlust
My last words left you with my one final pint
It fizzes and foams, still four hundred years fresh
I'd still be here, if not for one oversight
That rent all my clothes and that seared all my flesh
In a life of adventure I'd never regret
I've seen both sweet angels and envoys of hell
But of all the people in this world I've met
It's you that I drink to, my dear friends, farewell.

Vengeance (Dalton)
storyline: Dimensional Vortex
From sea to sky, from then to now
When once I flew, I now just crawl
I don't know when, I don't know how
But I will be the way you fall
For thirteen thousand years I'll wait
For just one chance at Crono's throat
Though out of favor now with fate
One chapter still must be rewrote
No golems left, I'm on my own
Trapped in abyss while you roam free
I'll get by with my heart of stone
This time, you are no match for me
My hands twitch, hungering for the kill
I long to pillage, rape, usurp
This time I can, this time I will
Take back all that was once mine --- BUUUUUUURP!

The Final Battle (Marle)
timeline: Day of Lavos
We've come so far, we've come so bravely
All our hopes have carried us here
Who knew from day one when you saved me
We'd fight together for all we hold dear
A call to arms across the ages
The world's one common enemy
Determined to rewrite the pages
Of our world's cursed history
For all who stand against the darkness
For every child that fears the night
Who knew in times so dark and hopeless
Determination burned so bright
Our distant promise, memory
My life belongs to you, not this
But when I glimpse you guarding me
I'd die right here for just one kiss
Through acid rain, through fire, through time
I'd fight forever at your side
It's now or never; time to shine
Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide
Fight on, my love, fight on, my friends
We're all that's left to save our race
No matter how this battle ends
The end with you I'll gladly face.

I...wow. There is nothing I can say. You clearly put a lot of time and thought into this, and obviously strived to understand each character to their fullest. As a lover of literature and a poet myself, I applaud your brilliant work.
I admit it's not very deep or representative in ways usually found in poetry, but as an ode of sorts, it's incredible.

Make a Chrono Trigger rap.
Because they nerfed all the olde English in the DS version, sadly.

@Cookie: Thank you. The main focal point was imagery. Because I'm a**l about rhyming, syllables, and alliteration, I try to make my works flowing and aesthetically pleasing. Unfortunately, that makes my writing superficial.

Ah well. Balance is not my strong suit. xd

INORITE WTF IS UP WIT DAT

They took out most of the characters' verbal behaviours, though. If the name didn't come before the message, you wouldn't even be able to tell who was who anymore. neutral The SNES version is definitely a must-play to get both sides of the story.

Agreed. The new translation, while more easy to understand, is not nearly as entertaining or deep.
