when should I use cuál instead of Qué and vice versa?

hard to explain really, but here goes...

so cuál is when u have many options. like, there are so many #s in the phone book so u say "¿cuál es tu teléfono?"
and Qué is for eveything else? (EPIC FAIL... crying redface )

In the example of the phone numbers you correct..
But usually [or at least me] if the person you're talking to, knows you are asking for their phone number you just say.

"Cuál es tu numero?
What's your number?

is easy... you use "cual" same as you use "which"

you use "que" same as you use what.

both what and which = que and cual are adjetive and also proname indefinide, just look the sentence in english, if you have clear which one use in english...you will know which one to use in spanish too

cual = which
que = what

examples:

-Para que se usa?
For what is it used?

- Para cual es necesario?
for Which one is it necessary?

-Por cual me inclino?
Which one should I choose?

Why do you write?


note: para que also could mean why? for example

-Para que tengo que ir?
Why do I have to go?
