A very simple triangular shawl can be knitted by casting on 3 stitches and then increasing at the beginning of every row.

To learn how to cast on you can google "long tail cast on". There are several videos showing how to do it.

Simple pattern:

1. Cast on 3 stitches

2. Knit all stitches

3. Knit one stitch, wrap your yarn around the needle (yarn over), knit the remaining two stitches.

4. Knit one stitch, yarn over, knit the remaining three stitches (one of those stitches is your yarn over).

Keep increasing with a yarn over in the beginning of each round until you're happy with the size of the shawl.

The only stitches used are knit and yarn over. If you knit the shawl in stockinette stitch (every other row knit, every other purl) it will most likely curl so garter stitch is better.

This will create a shawl like this:

Bad picture, but you get the idea?

I've made a shawl with the increase method described. I've also made a waist-length cloak that started with 120 stitches at the shoulders and increased. I'll need to take some pictures of it and post them.

This is how I learned to cast-on:

You could always make a rectangular shawl that could double as a scarf
