I was thinking, maybe it's a trap. Not the whole procession. But if you read Erasmus' bio, he always hides his features. For him to deliberately let the guard see him, maybe he wants to lure Esole and Kiae in. Use them against the New Order, turn them to the Hand side? It's how he is.
