While naming the gene POKEMON could be a coincidence, I think there may be more to it. They referred to turning off the gene as "knocking it out." Knocking out POKEMON? Hmmm....!

ACTUALLY, its called Pokemof, but Pokemon is its nickname by pokemon fans who've heard of it.
Probably the genetic code for the mutation. Kind of like how if you looked at a string of DNA in letter form, you'd just get GATTACA as your coding.
EDIT: Whoops... it's GATTAGA... redface I forgot they made a movie titled that, and the trivia behind it is that the letters that make up the title are also the letters used in DNA sequencing codes.
