You might get somewhere if you add more to the storyline, instead of using a regular plot idea, that we have seen many variations of. Also, think of how you would include separate people (for example, instead of the normal good side/bad side, make it so that its nerd's friend/popular).
Be sure to enforce rules, such as "characters must look the part -- no elves, mystical creatures, etc etc." or you'll wind up with something difficult to manage because everyone will pick omg beautiful elven characters with big chests that look nothing like nerds, or something. (And create profile specific profile skeletons, so people enter the information you want to see, such as classes, personality, background/history, relation to the main character, etc.)
Also, the amount of 'drama' would mostly rest on the shoulders of the other roleplayers. If I were you, I'd put somewhere in the thread that drama is encouraged, and then put a reason like "we want this to be as fun as possible; remember, this is only a roleplay!" beside it.
