Prologue

Good advice is to expect the unexpected. Day is when the unexpected happens. The night brings many surprises. You can never escape what was planned was for you… it is your destiny. The deep dark secrets you need to hide. The things we never knew about come to life before us. When you find out about them you are scared maybe mortified. The dark cold nights unravel your very soul. You lose your mind and are completely unaware of your actions. Until the breaking of dawn has arose above the horizon bringing a fresh new day. Refreshing you mind and body but hiding the deeds accomplished at night.

The wolves howl towards the full moon crying their soul’s desires. The eerie songs drew my attention and I woke out of my sleep. The sweat beads cooled my spine from the extensive heat. I threw the comforter off my burning body and headed for the kitchen. Something came over me; I didn’t feel like myself anymore, but it felt staggering, bizarre. I felt stronger and more aware of my surroundings and things I never knew existed. I ran outside into the dense woods, acting on an impulse.

The hoots of owls distracted their prey and the spiders crept around the dead carcasses waiting for a free meal. The flies and buzzards swarmed the lifeless body stripping it of all the meat right down to the rotting bones. I jumped over rotting logs and thru thorn bushes. Then I spotted it a tall steep hill that from an angle could resemble a mountain from far. I ran to the top of a hill and stared at the enormous full moon waiting. Waiting for something to happen by the way I was anxiously breathing. Something was going to happen, but I acted on what you might say instinct; but I feel wild untamed. Out of the shadows a silver wolf with black paws and ears came from the dark lightened now by the moon. The fearless animal stared at me with grey fierce eyes sending a message and tremors down my spine. He snarled and paced back and forth in front of me. It stopped suddenly in front of me and howled a song that seemed to draw attention to our location. Vile eyes stared at me from the shadows. They each revealed themselves one by one in the order of rank and bowed their heads to the ground.

Chapter 1

The moon hesitantly surrendered the sky to the warm bright sun. The bright rays mixed with the beautiful colors sent a thankful spirit into me. I enjoy watching the sunrise and sunsets they are breathtaking. I wish I could paint the scenes I see but they wouldn’t be the same as looking at the real thing. A loud muffling sound, coming from across the hall, disturbed my fixation on the beautiful sunrise. My sister, Leah, was snoring again. What a surprise. She still ruins my life in her sleep. I quickly got up and headed for the bathroom to get ready for school. I grabbed my soft absorbent towel and started my steaming shower.

Showers are my favorite time in the morning. I was all imperfections off and use my herbal cherry blossom shampoo. The shower massages my tense muscles and melts away the sleepiness. Sooner or later the dream has to end. The shower seemed to short. I walked over to the sink and Leah bangs on the door.

“Hurry up Kara! I don’t have all day you know.” she yelled and pushed the door open so that she could see how much longer I had to go.
I didn’t realize the door was open. “Alright, I’m almost done. Give me a couple seconds to brush my teeth.” I retorted slightly acidic. In the mirror I saw her reflection and then realized the door was open. “Leah you pervert get out of here, now!” I slammed the door on her face and I put on my robe just in case she came back.

“Fine… just hurry up Kara.” She stomped back into her room.
I quickly brushed my teeth and ran into my room. This was the hardest part of all now. I have no idea what I’m going to wear. I have a pretty good idea but I tend to lean towards the unusual and exotic side. Rushing in the morning is my forte but I am always early.

I skimmed thru my closet trying to find something to wear but my mind drew a blank. Finally I saw my inspiration a pure white hoodie with emotions drawn all over in script, my really dark almost black skinny jeans, and my cloudy grey converse. I threw them on wrinkle free, of course. The next big challenge was my hair. It’s really paper thin and a long dull faded black. My hair is all the way down to my waste. I could always just leave it down but where’s the fun in that. It would just be plain and unexciting. I always wanted red or purple highlights to give me the punk edge but my mom won’t let me. At least not until I’m fifteen which actually won’t be a long wait. Looking in the mirror at myself I strategize about the style my hair should have. I agree on a two ponytail look with black sequined ribbons. I tried my best to make them even and they looked perfect. I did a double take in the mirror and a soft knock and a familiar face popped thru the doorway.
“Almost ready Kara?” My mom asked.
“Almost I just need to eat breakfast and ill be ready to go.” I chimed with excitement.
“Okay I’ll meet you downstairs. By the way I made pancakes for you and Leah. Yours have strawberries and Leah’s has bananas on thee top. I hope you enjoy it. You might want to hurry before… you know.” My mom warned me without uttering the words I didn’t want to hear.
“No problem mom.” I yelled as I almost ran down the stairs almost squishing my sister’s cat, Oreo. He’s a white cat with a black ring around his eye. It’s cute cat, but nothing personal I just rather have a dog. Cats hunt small animals and just lay them in front of you, lifeless, for you to see. When they’re anger they pee all over the place or put fresh skid marks on your pillow. Last time I tried to hold him he almost fell out of my hands and he scratched from my upper thigh to my ankles. I was all bloody and my legs burned with everything they touched. My mom poured alcohol on my legs and I screamed and cried because of the pain.

So as you can see I’d rather a playful dog with a brain. This dog would be my best friend and we would do everything together. I would train it everyday and love it. They are amazing creatures who can do the impossible. I always daydreamed about having one but my dream doesn’t seem to be coming true. Not really a surprise though. As soon as I get one I want to get a Glenmore Grey. They are mix of a Snow Wolf and Inaris Winaric. They are extremely intelligent and have beautiful eyes that change colors because of their emotions in relation to the moon.

I am a freshman this year. I’m in Leah’s “turf” now. I hate being compared to her. She was really just another person who couldn’t care less about the world around her. My sister is a Junior and on the top of the status quo. She outshines me in this world I just live with it and do my best to shine my own way. No matter how much I am myself I don’t have many friends. Scarcely one or two talk to me but they aren’t people who would like to stick around me. In Leah’s world I am a nonexistent invisible being in the world and everyone in it.
“Kara…Kara,” My mom gently nudged me and called my name softly. “Huh what’s wrong, mom?” I asked confused. “You were daydreaming and your bus will be here soon.” She explained clearly seeing that I was a little disorientated. “Oh no! I have to hurry! I gotta run to the bus stop before it gets there! Bye mom.” I yelled running into the door almost forgetting to open it. I ran in the rain to the bus stop and a soaked bus patiently waited for me. I tapped the glass and she opened the door to the warm dry atmosphere. My bus driver, Sherri from the previous year, smiled and motioned for me to take a seat to hurry to our next destination. I hurried into an available seat and pulled out my red and black stripped iPod. I gently pushed in my squishy ear buds and played my favorite songs I recorded from the piano. My muscles relaxed and I drifted into a peaceful existence where my mind lives freely.

The bus jerked to an abrupt stop sending my iPod flying out of my hands. It flew and hit the guy, in front of me talking to his friends, and plopped to the floor.
“Ow, what was that?” He complained for a few seconds rubbing the back of his neck. “I’m so sorry.” I gasped, “It flew out of my hands.” The guy turned around and stared at me with soft tender black eyes. My heart sped up and my cheeks flushed. I didn’t realize I was staring until his skin faintly reddened.
“It’s okay. It really wasn’t your fault you were sleeping.” He gently smiled not looking directly into my eyes avoiding contact with mine. “Thank you for not being mad.” I showed appreciation for his compassionate understanding.
“No problem Kara. It was just an accident after all.” He stroked the back of his head. ‘How did he know my name? Why would he even bother to find out? I don’t really know him but it doesn’t hurt to be a little friendly, right?’
The bus slowly pulled up to the school’s cream-colored curb and everyone gathered their things. We were located in a long chain of buses eagerly waiting to escape the bustling parking lot.
“See you guys in the afternoon.” Every person on the bus except Steve and I was fighting their way off the bus. Steve was packing up his books and I was putting away my flighty iPod.
“Yo! Steve are ya coming?” A chocolate sun kissed boy asked while knocking on Steve’s window. Steve grinned, “Yeah I’m coming…I’m coming! I just need a second.”
I slowly packed my bag to observe Steve and his friends. I stood up, and grabbed my backpack attempting to leave without being obvious that I was spying. I want to have a carefree day like everyday of the passing summer. Unfortunately my clumsiness did not receive the memo. I staggered on Steve’s book bag, in the middle of the walk way, the floor was speedily approaching my face, and I expected to hit the floor and feel some extreme pain. I closed my eyes so that I wouldn’t have to see the dirt crystals up close. Instead of the ground, someone grabbed me and held me very close to them. I could feel their cool breathe on my face and hear their heart beat hasty. I opened my eyes and saw a face, but my vision was very blurred. I squinted and rubbed my eyes until the face was in a clear view. Then I saw his face and I immediately flushed a deep crimson but my brain seemed okay with this. I have no clue what to say and my heart is beating so fast. I resemble a ticking time bomb that will explode with anxiety and craziness. He looked guilty and sorrowful but his eyes were so soft it melted my heart.
“Are you okay Kara?” Steve questioned staring into my humiliated eyes. “Uh… I think so. What happened?” My brain is cloudy and what just happened escaped my mind. I think I tripped over something or someone, but Steve will tell me since I asked.
“Kara you tripped on my foot and I’m glad I caught you in time. I’m so sorry you could’ve gotten really hurt.” He looked as if he was in pure apologetic agony. “Don’t worry about it… uh I don’t know your name.” I admitted sheepishly. I really did know his name but he hasn’t properly introduced himself. “Oh I’m Steven Winston but my friends call me Steve.” He said politely while putting back on my two feet. “Thank you for catching me.” I fluttered my eyelashes and attempted to flirt. I really don’t know why I feel the need to embarrass myself. My flirtations are embarrassing because it very obvious if I like someone. In the fourth grade I was flirting with the most popular guy in school and all of my classmates laughed. I was so mortified that I had my hair dyed and cut along with a transferring to a new school.
Steve scratched the back of his neck and sighed. “It’s no problem it was actually my fault after all.” Steve’s friends watched from the outside of the bus and they were completely dumbfounded. I quickly ran off the bus so I wouldn’t have to answer and questions they might have had.

Orientation was very long and tiring. The most exciting part was yet to come, but all I know is that it’s coming soon. The fight for locker will be the most eventful thing today. What I really need is a top locker because last year a girl dropped textbooks and soda on me and completely ruined my hair and homework. That isn’t an experience that I would like to relive.
Soon the lecture soon ended and my time has come. My new challenge arose and my mission perfectly clear. ‘Kara you need to get a top locker no matter what it takes. This is what being short is good for. You have the speed and agility. Let’s do this!’ I motivated myself and recapped of all the incidents with the bottom lockers.
The teacher announced “Freshmen please choose your lockers now.” I took off into the thick mass of students pushing my way thru. I saw my locker shinning on the top of the world. I wrote my name on the little sticky and shoved it into the teacher’s hand. I feel relieved and I cooled down because all I need to do is get on the bus.
“Wow it’s the end of the day already! Time really flies.” A girl complained behind me with her friends.
‘I’m glad the day is over cause it’s the most boring.’ I complained silently.
I found a seat in the second to last row of hard weathered leather seats. Steve sat across from me trying to read a book, but his eyes continued to waver in my direction. I pretended to not notice so basically playing coy. I appreciated his stare and gave him the pleasure of returning it. He swiftly took his eyes away from mine and his cheeks redden. I silently giggled concealing my delight because of his stares.
There’s a boy in the back seat across from me that is watching my every move, every breath. His jade gemstones pierced my soul with every glance. I completely blushed out of clear embarrassment, that I was infatuated with his peeking. I would have dropped dead if he said a word to me. He was about to get off the bus and slid into my seat to depart until tomorrow. He smiled at me and my heart almost jumped out to meet him.
“Hi.” He said gazing into my icy blue diamonds. “H-Hiya…” I said apprehensively fiddling with my index fingers.
“So… are you new?” He asked sweeping his short black hair over his eyes. “Well sort of… I’m new to the high school.” I stumbled and tripped over my words. My mind was slowly slipping away. I never felt this way before and this feeling is very discomforting. I had to channel the nervous energy out of my body. I had an impulse to jump and run away. My left leg automatically bounced up and down. The seat gently vibrated and he noticed. He gave me a questioning look and I turned a rosy red. I wished that I could be calm, but my body was very nervous. I wished that this humiliation would end. Thankfully, the bus stopped on the street before mine and he left silently. I stared after him impulsively as he slowly stepped off the bus and met my intense gaze.
The bus was quiet, too quiet for my taste. I like the calm and serene, but I also like a little background noise to keep my mind going. My mind is wandering even though it was very quiet. I couldn’t stop thinking about that guy. He made my heart race just by sitting next to me. He made my heart skip by meeting my gaze, and made my heart stop by talking to me. I felt very tense when he was here. I can’t stop thinking about him now. I want to distract myself from these thoughts I am having.
I want to sing out loud to my favorite song. What will people think though? I don’t want to draw more attention to myself more than usual. I leisurely closed my eyes and breathed deeply. I love this song ever since Leah started singing it. I never admitted it but now I want to song it so bad. The song is called black diamond it reminds me of myself and my wishes and dreams.
