Quick question about the pentagram

There's not much correlation between a symbol's age and it's power. There are ancient symbols that don't have any power, magically, and there are fairly new symbols that are known for having a ton of power (such as the Fotamecus (sp?) sigil). It's all about the person who's using it. No symbol has very much power by itself, until someone gives it power. The pentacle is an Old Symbol anyway, by any standard.

Who are you to just which symbols are worthless and which are not?

it is one of the oldest. not THE oldest, but up there in the first handful or so.
