Joss’s parents died when she and her two younger siblings were very young. She protected and took care of her siblings and acted like she was their parent. Life was very hard for them and they often had to live on the streets. They barely ever had a real house to live in. She died when a gang invaded their home. She tried to protect her younger siblings and was killed in the process. Like all other Shinigami, she doesn't remember her life before becoming a Shinigami.

Biography:
Joss grew up as a younger sister to Gin Ichimaru. The two of them were very close. When Gin went off to the Soul Society, Joss became lonely. She decided that she would enter the Shinigami Academy and become a Shinigami so that she could be could be close to her brother again.
She was too young to enter the Shinigami Academy at the same time as Gin so she joined two years later. Gin had already graduated and given the 3rd seat of Squad 5 by that time. Even though Gin was a Shinigami, he still spent a lot of time with his sister by allowing her to come into the Squad 5 barracks. Because of that she also got to know Sosuke Aizen because she spent most of her time there. She respected him very much he acted very sweet towards her, like an older brother. One night, Gin had stayed out late, and Joss went out looking for him. She followed him to a clearing out in the woods. Gin had been following Aizen and Joss stood behind a tree as she watched a few Shinigami fight other Shinigami that had hollow mask. She fainted because of all the strong spiritual pressure in the area. When she awoke she found Aizen and Gin standing before her. She promised she wouldn’t tell anyone what had happened when Aizen told her that he would make sure she would be on the same squad as Gin when she became a Soul Reaper.
Joss graduated from the Shinigami Academy a few years later and was placed as a very low seat of Squad 6. At that time, Gin was Lieutenant of Squad 5 under Sosuke Aizen. She wanted to become stronger so that she could be on the same squad and on a seat closer to her brother so she asked Byakuya Kuchiki to train her. He agreed and while he was training her, Gin became the Captain of Squad 3. Joss was soon transferred to Squad 3 and soon became the 3rd seat, right under Izuru Kira. She spent a lot more time with Gin now that they were on the same squad and they became closer then ever. During the invasion of the Ryoka (AKA: Ichigo and friends), Gin had Kira told Joss that Byakuya, whom she still trained with, wanted to see her. She was on her way there when she passed by Gin. She told him she couldn’t stay and talk and when she turned her back, he attacked her and stabbed her through the stomach. She felt so betrayed when she awoke later in the Squad 4 Barracks, and vowed she would knock some sense into Gin. She trained hard so that she would have the power to defeat her brother.
She was also a part of the Fake Karakura town battle. She defeated her brother and was about to kill herself when Gin made her promise that she would live on in his place as the Captain of Squad 3. She attempted to live through with this promise and returned to the Soul Society. They refused to give her the Captain's seat of Squad 3, but gave her the Captain-ship of Squad 13. To this day, she is trying hard to get the Captain-ship of Squad 13.
