When I was little, there were no other kids my age in the neighborhood to play with. My little brother was a sore loser, and I didn't always feel like letting him win, so up until my tweens, I mostly read books and comics.
In my tweens and teens there were plenty of people my own age, and my brother had matured enough to take losing like a civilized person. We played Life, Rummy 500, Kings In The Corner, Uno, Dominoes, Bonkers, Mad Magazine's board game, Cathedral, Upwords, and Monopoly (with lots of 'house rules').
Around my late teens I got into Dungeons and Dragons, which later lead to Tunnels and Trolls (a humorous clone of D&D), Battletech, Teenagers From Outer Space, and Paranoia.
Nowadays, I'll cheerfully play any type of game, board, card, role-playing or whatever...it's all about having fun with other people now.
