There was rope swinging in the first level of Sonic 3, but unlike in Sonic 4, those ropes just swung on their own for some reason! BAD PHYSICS OMFG!!1
Alright, so. I feel a bit disappointed with this game, and I think the main reason for that is because it's called Sonic 4, which really heightens the expectation level. Instead, it should be called New Sonic the Hedgehog or Sonic Classic or something lame like that, 'cause it's basically made more to be reminiscent of the old games than to actually be their sequel. Back in the 90s when I was little, I imagined that there would be a Sonic 4, and it was nothing like this. It had the same old 16-bit graphics and super catchy 16-bit music. It featured Sonic and Tails (and now Knuckles, since he's no longer confused!) up against Robotnik, and there was a story! A simple story that was explained by a combo of reading the game description and watching dialogue-free cut scenes, but a story nonetheless. They'd have to defeat the new Death Egg or something. There would just be something that connects it to the other games from the original series. And most importantly, the levels would be fresh and original. Sonic 2 didn't try to copy the first game, and S3&K didn't try to copy the ones before them, either. Those games were so great because they were original (I know that Sega has been trying to make things original and failing, but that's because they've been getting stupid ideas for originality, like THEY HAS SWORD NOW or HE CAN TURN INTO A WEREWOLF LOL). Sonic 4's basically got a rip-off of Green Hill Zone, then a rip-off of Casino Night Zone, then a rip-off of Labyrinth Zone and finally a rip-off of Metropolis Zone before the final boss (an upgraded version of the final boss from Sonic 2) in space. A lot of points in the game make you think, "I remember a part that was just like this in one of the old games!" That's cool and all, but that's not what a sequel should be doing. It would just bother me a lot less if the name was different. Now I've lost hope for there ever being a sequel to the Genesis games that really lives up to AND feels like one of the originals. I just wish they'd have pulled a Mega Man 9. Now that game really feels like a true successor. They might as well just have remade the old games with new graphics instead of making a new game that feels ripped off.
Disregarding its name, though, it's a pretty decent game. It reminded me of the Sonic Advance games a little, and those were great. They didn't need to try hard to go back to their roots or whatever to be good. They just aimed to be solid platformers, is all. And Sonic 4 is a good and challenging platformer, it really is! The thing that ruins it for me is that I'm constantly reminded of the older games and how much I'd rather be playing them. sad
As for the physics, who really cares? The super short amount of time you get to jump into the Special Ring is annoying, though.
It shoulda been 500 Wii points cheaper, at least.

Super Cheesio Waynebrizzle http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PrkeyrU3wSw Pretty impressive speed run of the first act. Holy crap! And I thought my speed run was good. ._.
Apparently the guy that did it holds a world record for a speed run of Sonic 2.
