Could some people please help me get enough phrases to help me get through my trip to japan????
PostPosted: Tue Oct 19, 2010 5:56 pm
umm. . . I guess I can suggest that you make sure you can properly pronounce things first of all.

Not many people in japan speak much english but it's worth asking if you need with directions or anything
Sumimasen, eigo ga hanashimasu ka?
Excuse me, do you speak english?

Sumimasen can also be used if you accidentally bump someone or if you need someones attention to ask a question.

Another important question would be
otearai wa doko desu ka?
where is the bathroom?

this is the base question for asking for directions to most things. ______ wa doko desu ka?

doko= where

Directional words.
These will be handy to know.
Right = migi
left= hidari
front/in front of= mae
back/behind= Ushiro
inside= Naka
on/above= ue
under= shita
near= soba
next= tonari
here= koko
there= soko
over there= asoko

more handy things
what is this, that, that over there.
this= kore (near you)
that=sore (near person you are speaking too)
that over there= are (far from both the speaker and listener)
_____ wa nan desu ka?

nan/nani = what

You will have to say thank you plenty of times i'm sure,
doumo arigatou

Umm. . .thats all i can think of right now. I hope that this was helpfull.

Might be too late, but I thought I'd share some random phrases as well.

すみませんが、(ask your question)。
Excuse me but (ask your question)?

At the station (to the people who work at the station): すみません、渋谷に行きたいんですが…
sumimasen, shibuya ni ikitain desu ga...
Excuse me but I want to go to Shibuya...(and I don't know how to get there)

Random Japanese person: 日本語が上手ですね!
(Your Japanese is good!)
You: いいえ、まだまだです。<----probably the best way to answer
(No, not yet.)

「insert word or phrase」とは、どういう意味ですか?
"insert word or phrase" to wa, dou yu imi desuka?
What does "insert word or phrase" mean?

ゆっくりいってください。
(Say it slowly please)

をください。(when ordering something at a restaurant)
please.

手伝ってもらえませんか。
(Can you help me?) with what depends on context

ありがとうございます (thank you)

すみません or もうしわけありません
means sorry except the latter is more formal

This is very good! But I recomend using hiragana and katakana before putting your kanji in because If you don't know what it says with hiragana your not gunna be able to change from other alphabets, Oh and you have a couple of spelling mistakes smile

Ah, you mean the romaji for "どういう意味"? Yes, I put "dou yu imi" instead of "dou iu imi" because that's how most people pronounce it. I thought people who read the romaji instead of the kana would be more interested in pronunciation.
